Leatherman Style – a Minimalist Keychain Multi-Tool

Leatherman’s Style is a new keychain pocket knife and multi-tool with a very minimalist and “survivalist” design. At a mere 2.3 inches long and weighing less than one ounce (0.8 oz to be precise), the Style is the perfect size for a keychain tool.

The Leatherman Style is made from stainless steel with anodized aluminum scales, and features the following tools:

  • Compact spring-action scissors
  • 420HC plain edge knife
  • Nail File
  • Flat-Phillips screwdriver tip
  • Tweezers
  • Key ring attachment

The Style will be available in blue, red, pink, and black, and is slated for May 2010 release with an MSRP of $20.

I’ve been searching for a compact keychain tool with a bigger blade than on Victorinox’s Classic Swiss Army pocket knife, and it looks like the Style may fit the bill.

Update: Following is an image of the new Style showing that, like the Style CS, the Style will include removable tweezers. This is of course subject to change until Leatherman’s first production run hits the shelves.

Update 2: The Leatherman Style is currently scheduled to be released on May 15th and is now available for preorder at $20.

Not a bad little minimalist keychain tool. I think the Style CS is a better overall package but this is so little you’d hardly even know its there.

420HC steel is a pretty good quality to find on such a small and inexpensive tool.

I used to carry one, but I didn’t like it much. For one thing, the knife didn’t keep an edge well, and it is so tiny and the curve is so sharp that it isn’t easy to sharpen. For another, it is bulkier than it has to be, which you will see if you examine it. I replaced it with a Victorinox Classic with Alox metal scales instead of the typical red plastic.

The stronger material lets the scales be thinner, so the knife is like a little sliver of soap (though you lose the tweezers and toothpick that come with the red plastic Classics). It is wider but flatter than the Style, and sits in my pocket better.

Unfortunately, the Style doesn’t appear to be available anymore.
