Dewalt 12V Max Cordless Drill Driver

We recently discussed the new 12V Max cordless screwdriver that Dewalt is introducing as part of their upcoming line of compact cordless tools. We’re now going to talk about the 3/8″ drill driver (DCD710S2) that Dewalt will be releasing at the same time.

Features

  •  Compact and lightweight (2.4lbs)
  • 2-speed transmission: 0-400 and 0-1500 RPM
  • 15 clutch settings + drill mode
  • 3/8″ single-sleeve chuck
  • LED worklight
  • Belt hook
  • Ergonomic handle and flat-bottom battery

Drilling

Testing Out the New 3/8" Drill/Driver

With a 3/8″ chuck, the drill/driver can accept a much wider variety of drill styles and sizes than a 1/4″ hex chucked tool can. At Dewalt’s training facility, I gave the drill/driver a whirl with a 1/2″ spade bit against a 2x beam, and it absolutely plowed through the wood.

The drill/driver has two speed settings, 0-400 and 0-1500 RPM, that make it more versatile for drilling than the 12V MAX screwdriver, which only has one 0-1050 speed setting.

Fastening

Since you’re dealing with a 3/8″ chuck, users can still use 1/4″ hex power bits or an adapter with 1″ insert bits. The chuck extends the nose of the tool by a bit, and the need for an insert bit adapter lengthens it further.

The drill/driver kit (DCD710S2) will include two batteries, a charger, and contactor bag, and will be priced at ~$159 this fall. A combo kit (DCK211S2) featuring the drill/driver and screwdriver will also be available.
