25 Top Amazon Tool Deals on ToolGuyd in 2019

Jan 3, 2020 Stuart 23 Comments

If you buy something through our links, ToolGuyd might earn an affiliate commission.

Pentel Graphgear 1000 Mechanical Pencil

As you might already know, we have an affiliate arrangement with Amazon and other retailers, where purchases made through certain links usually earn a small commission for ToolGuyd.

Out of curiosity, I created an end-of-year report, to see which were the most popular 25 tool and related product purchases among ToolGuyd readers and visitors.

The data is somewhat (extremely) flawed, and so what the report usually shows is which deals or deal posts were most popular.

I find the data interesting, and hope you feel the same.

For instance, Mora knife deals always seem to be popular. I would have thought my affinity for fixed-blade knives wouldn’t be shared by many readers, but apparently you guys thought the deal was as good as I did.

Here’s the list:

25 Most Popular Tool Deals on ToolGuyd in 2019

  1. Pentel GraphGear 1000 Mechanical Pencil, (0.5mm)
  2. Streamlight 66122 Stylus Pro Pen Light
  3. DEWALT 20V MAX XR 20V Battery, 5.0-Ah, 2-Pack (DCB205-2)
  4. rOtring 600 0.5mm Black Barrel Mechanical Pencil

  24. Gerber Suspension Multi-Plier
  25. GearWrench 81270 3/8″ Drive Gimbal Ratchet

I considered highlighting the items that I have purchased for personal use, but that ended up being 18 of the 25 items. If you include review samples that I continue to use and recommend, that number increases to 21 out of the 25 listed items.

The 4 remaining items I have not tested personally include the Mora Craftline knife, Milton ColorFit couplers, Dewalt 100pc screwdriver bit set (I do use these bits, just not that particular assortment), and the 3M WorkTunes hearing protector.

I was surprised though, to see that so many readers purchased the Pentel GraphGear mechanical pencils. It’s a great pencil that I can heartily recommend. If I’m being honest, part of the reason for that deal post was to “get it out of my system,” helping me to resist the urge to purchase another one or two for myself.

I was selective about my school and office supplies before I could afford to be selective about my hand and power tool choices. I know that some of you share that attention towards writing instruments, but I didn’t think it would be more popular than other tool deals.

Here are some more interesting gleanings from my Amazon affiliate reports:

Most Popular Cyber Monday 2019 Deal

DEWALT DCS356D1 20V XR Variable Speed Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit

Most Popular Thanksgiving 2019 Deal

DEWALT 20V MAX XR Brushless Combo Kit, Compact 4-Tool (DCK483D2)

Most Popular Black Friday 2019 Deal

DEWALT 20V Max XR Cordless Router, Brushless, Tool Only (DCW600B)

This resulted from the Dewalt router + sander bundle deal, as the sander was strong in second place.

Most Popular Prime Day 2019 Deals

Day 2: Bosch Flexi-Click GSR12V-140FCB22 Cordless Electric Screwdriver 12V Kit

I didn’t get that many in this list, but the ones I did get, I came back and purchased multiples. The Gearwrench 35 pc, Morakniv, Wera, and FlexiClick ended up being personal first time buys for me, and gifts to friends this year. Now I own multiples of some of them.

Thanks for turning me into them, Stuart.

The deals that are cheap, like the pencil, are much more likely for me to take a random jump at to see if the hype is real.

$100 screwdriver sets, not so much.

I got 6 out of 25 but let you know about one of those so 5 not counting that one. I honestly felt like it was gonna be about 20/25. I check the website several times a day to see if there’s any deals out there or if there are neat new tools that I just have to have. Being a reader of your website can certainly be expensive at times but it is one of my favorite websites. Keep up the good work and Happy New Year!

I did end up getting some deals not on this list: some DeWalt boots and work pants from Home Depot. I was iffy about it, but they were nearly half price.

The boots came yesterday. They are great. The toe box is wide enough, but only just. It is more than long enough. I don’t know why more shoemakers don’t adopt Keen’s wide, square toeboxes. They look dorky, but they are comfortable, and unconstricted toes are warm toes. But otherwise, the boots seem sturdy.

The pants arrive on Monday. 🙂

    Hi Stu,

I’m just offering up an idea here, depending on how much you want to run the numbers, but since most of the Top 25 are cheap items, for obvious reason, maybe you could do some breaking things down by price bracket, like $0-25, $26-100, $101-200 and $201+. It’s easier to gauge how a $300 tablesaw deal did with the readers, or a $99 brushless drill, when it’s not up against a $20 bit set.

I tried looking at the data, and it’s just a mess. The information above comes from Amazon’s processing and presentation of the data. The raw spreadsheet data is much harder to analyze.

For example, in the processed data, I can see the most-purchased items. To gather the same data from the spreadsheet would take complex analysis, and that’s after I know what I want to know or look for. The raw data can be interesting, though. For instance, the ratio of sales made via desktop vs. mobile devices is inverted compared to how many people browse on mobile vs. desktop devices.

      The top 25 items aren’t cheap, they’re inexpensive. =)

It makes sense – speaking personally, I’m more likely to be lured into impulse-buying something new or a needed upgrade that’s $5-$50, rather than power tools or equipment I hadn’t already been shopping for.

You just need some hlookups, vlookups and a pivot table 🙂

        That normally solves everything!

    Great picks…

I’m still waiting for Knipex plier wrenches to drop a bit. I’ve had my eye on the 2pc set (5” & 7”) for a couple months now. Seems that the price would have dropped around the holidays……..just don’t see it happening now. Might just have to bite the bullet.

I have a few Knipex tools, Cobra, Alligator and Pliers Wrench. Cought the Cobras on sale but full price on the others, buy once cry once. Paying $30++++ for a couple small pieces of metal is hard to justify… Until you use them, the quality and performance are undeniable.

The Plier Wrench is about twice the cost of the Cobras and Alligators. Like you said, hard to justify……but I’m sure I won’t regret it…..once I wipe those tears away. Lol. Thanks for your reply.

I only regret not buying the pliers wrench earlier. They’re expensive, but definitely high on my favorites tool list.

Well said Mr Lobert. My sentiment as well. I see no point in discussing deals from last year that Amazon had. Don’t take this the wrong way but I could care less about the items that strangers bought online during the holidays. I’m sure the feeling is mutual in regards to what I bought. That’s your business. Keep it that way. While the annual holiday salesguyd tirade was going on there were quite a few new tools that were released during the season and several more that were announced that are coming soon. Bosch, skil, and makita released new miter saws and several other brands released new stuff as well. Both power tools and hand tools as well as some ope. But here we are where we get to read about the exciting deals on Amazon from last year. Oh boy!
