80/20 T-Slot Aluminum Wall Cabinet

8020 T-Slot Aluminum Wall Cabinet

80/20 put together a nice how-to video showing how to construct a simple low-profile wall cabinet using their t-slotted aluminum extrusions, fasteners and joining plates, hinge hardware, and a couple of sheets of plastic pegboard.

I think that 80/20 intended for the video to be more inspirational than as a real how-to. The construction process is easy enough to follow along, and are also downloadable plans and a bill of parts on the project page (thanks, Dave!). For the next how-to project 80/20 should really consider putting together custom order bundles, but that’s just my opinion.

You can purchase 80/20 components via their Amazon store, eBay Garage Sale store, or larger industrial suppliers.

80/20 is really great to work with, but larger projects can get very expensive rather quickly.

You can fabricate your own joining plates, but it requires a lot of work and can be very time-consuming. A long time ago I purchased aluminum bars and angles that I drilled and cut down to size, but these days I just buy the ready-to-use joining plates.

80/20 is great stuff, I built my CNC mill using it… but for a storage box like this… overkill and costly.

I like the idea but like what Pencil neck said “costly and a bit overkill”. I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade but for the price this stuff is a bit more suited for more critical purposes but it’s a great idea.

You should check out photo’s on google of what people have done with these sections.
Very poplar in the science & research community along with making CNC and 3D machines. Also good for router fences and shop jigs. 80/20 is very useful.

There’s a cool thread in Garage Journal about a guy using 80/20 to attached six Harbor Freight 44″ tool benches together making a very cool and clean work shop.

Definitely worth taking a look at 80/20 and letting the mind wondering what you can do with it, it’s endless.

Stuart, thanks as always for the info. I looked at the comments for this vid on YouTube and they do provide a link to download the bill of materials plus the plans in Autocad, eDrawing, Solidworks, and IGES formats, but you must fill in your personal information to receive the free downloads, which might mean spam in your future. Too bad it’s not offered in Sketchup format. Here’s the link: http://www.8020.net/XDIY1401.asp

      Thanks!

I added the URLs to the page. I popped in my info and found that the downloads are on their public website.

The plans are actually not as straightforward as I initially thought. The bill of materials has a $430.51 quote price, part of which goes towards access holes and tapping. It’s cheaper to make or buy an access hole jig and 1/4″-20 tap. Heck, it’s cheaper to buy 3 or 4 commercial heavy-duty cabinets.

I have been buying quite a lot of 80/20 lately for a few projects, but this wall cabinet isn’t something I could ever see myself tackling at that high of a cost.

Just adding to above, I do have to say thank you to Stuart for showing this cabinet, it’s nice and refreshing to see ideas for a different looking cabinet, far from being the eye sore of some other common storage ideas. This would probably look really great in a clean and modern shop or garage.

And when pricing it out, I have correct myself from above and say that it’s not that expensive. Plus because of the versatility of 80/20 sections you can easily add other types of storage and tables to compliment it in the same fashion. Low maintenance and bomb proof to boot.

Last place I worked, our laser engraver cabinet was made from 80/20 components. We also had a stand partially built with them. They’re worth a look.

80/20 products are great, especially when you get their remnants from their ebay store. I made an almost infinitely adjustable fence for my Delta jointer with a cheap length of their 1030 profile, and a fantastic table saw fence with 3 t-slots on the sides and 2 on top from their 2040 profile for my custom table saw and router table combo. An accessory fence made from 3 lengths of their 2020 profile adds adjustable opening for router bits and dust collection through the center channel of the profile.

But it is WAY too expensive when I can’t find remnants to suit my needs. There is a local outfit with essentially the EXACT same catalog, but they were not at all helpful in finding cheap offcuts so I order from 80/20. Their ebay items are packed incredibly well, by the way. Everything arrives in perfect condition. And there are lots of downloads on their site to show you what people have done with their stuff.
