Amazon has updated their listing for the Dewalt 20V Max Atomic Compact Series brushless drill kit, and is now selling it to everyone for just $99.
I’ve been posting a lot about this Dewalt cordless drill kit recently.
First, I found it very surprising that Home Depot refrained from holding their clockwork-like spring and summer promo. At this time, they’re still selling it for an unreasonable $179 while independent dealers – and now Amazon – are selling the kit at its typical discounted or special buy price.

Then, I noticed that Amazon was selling this kit for $99, but only to business customers.
Now, Amazon opened the deal up to everyone. At the time of this posting, there’s a shipping ETA of July 22-23 for the kit.
Dewalt has very many different cordless drill kits, including at the same $99 promotional or special buy price point.
They have an old brushed motor model that sells in enormous volumes at Amazon, and older brushless model that sells at Amazon and many online dealers, a newer brushless drill that sells at Lowe’s and many online dealers, and then there’s this Atomic series drill kit that Home Depot sells, typically at the same $99 price.
Some Dewalt dealers carry all of the 20V Max cordless drill kits that are promo priced at $99.
Frankly, I don’t understand why Dewalt needs to have 4 different cordless drill kits all at the same price point. I like the 20V Max Atomic drill kit a lot better than Dewalt’s other $99 drill kit options, and think it would be great if they replaced all of them with this one.

I don’t believe that Amazon has ever sold the Dewalt Atomic series cordless drill kit before, at least not directly – there have been plenty of reseller listings, such as for their 2-tool combo kit.
The situation still confuzzles, but I’m happy to see Amazon start to sell the best entry-level cordless drill kit Dewalt makes. Maybe now they can add a “new model at the same price” label to their old brushed motor drill listing and stop selling that outdated tech.

“At this time, they’re still selling it for an unreasonable $179”
But in typical HD fashion, you can get it with an impact driver for $10 less at $169 – https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-ATOMIC-20-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Cordless-Compact-1-2-in-Drill-Driver-and-1-4-in-Impact-Driver-w-2Ah-Battery-Charger-Bag-DCD794D1WCF809B/324810167

I bought this drill, as opposed to buying DeWalt 12 volt and am very happy with it. I actually got the 2 tool Atomic combo at Ace for 177.00.

“Ships from Amazon” and “Sold by Amazon”: Does that guarantee it’s legit and not third party?
Also, wish it had a better battery.

No, because of shared binning/comingling it’s entirely possible for you to get a 3rd party marketplace seller’s item without any way to know. If you look at the “Other Sellers on Amazon” box in the lower right you can see all the other sellers that list this same item, and if it’s fulfilled by Amazon then their stock got mixed in with all of Amazon’s stock.
So if you buy this you might get stock that was originally sourced by Amazon, but you could just as easily get a box originally sourced by “MARKSON Distribution corporations”, “OFFICE CHASE CORP.”, “bky trading”, etc.
Similarly reviews are stored by the item, not by the seller. So you can’t even know if reviews about counterfeit goods or bad handling were for the same seller.

Amazon sells thousands of certain Dewalt and Craftsman products tools every week. Do you really think they’re commingling reseller inventory into the pallets they get from SBD?
Avoid 3rd party resellers and there shouldn’t be any more problems than with authorized resellers.
If anyone is worried, they can find a retail store and open the box before leaving the store to verify the contents.
Bonnie
Yes, because they don’t want to keep two identical (from their perspective) units in separate inventory slots in their warehouses. Not commingling (from Amazon’s perspective) wastes space, takes up extra warehouse worker/robot time, and adds unnecessary shipping delays.
The commingling also has to do with where you’re ordering from. If Amazon has pallets of a particular UPC in X distribution center, but LMO marketseller shipped a couple boxes of that same UPC to Y distribution center, if you live nearer Y you’ll get shipped one of LMO’s boxes when you buy the Amazon listing since that will get to you faster and as far as Amazon is concerned the two boxes are identical. And if you’re closer to X warehouse and buy one of LMOs listings you’ll get Amazon’s stock instead.
I believe marketplace sellers *can* opt out now and use their own unique store barcodes. But this works against them on the platform as it costs more/takes longer to process boxes, and now their product will ship slower to many customers than it would if commingled.
Commingling is one of the core ways Amazon got their shipping to be so fast.

“Does that guarantee it’s legit and not third party?”
No, because Amazon is not an authorized retailer of DeWalt tools (go to https://www.dewalt.com/find-retailer and click “Find online” to see who is authorized). And since Amazon doesn’t reveal how they obtained the product, you have no way of knowing whether it is legit or not.
All that said, I highly doubt that Amazon is engaging in any shady dealing. More importantly, my experience with Amazon has been that they always do the right thing if I have a legitimate concern.
Also, I would expect that DeWalt would honor their warranty if you are buying directly from Amazon. DeWalt has to know that Amazon is selling their products, and is not doing anything to prevent that.
However, a potential cause for concern might be for legal issues. Suppose you buy a defective DeWalt grinder from Amazon and something bad happens, causing you to go after DeWalt for lots of money. In that scenario I expect that DeWalt would carefully scrutinize whether you bought the grinder from an authorized DeWalt retailer, and if you bought it from Amazon they might argue that Amazon is an “unauthorized seller”. But that’s just speculation on my part, and I’d happily buy a $99 DeWalt tool from Amazon.

Dewalt to me a few months ago:
“ I was able to confirm that Amazon is an authorized retailer for select DEWALT products.”
Stuart
Ideally. The last I checked, Amazon sold and shipped Dewalt items are considered authorized by Dewalt.

“…their clockwork-like spring and supper promo” – seems like you may need a snack Stuart 😉
Stuart
Oof. Thanks, *fixed*. Not a typo, but not a Freudian slip either. Wonder how that happened.
