Over at Amazon, I came across a “shop our exclusive tools” link yesterday, with a Black & Decker cordless drill as the main image. Looking around that link, I found a lot of straight-to-Amazon no-name brands, but decided to dig around a little deeper.
And then I found it – beyond by Black + Decker.

Here’s the question that immediately came to mind – is that Amazon’s answer to Walmart’s new exclusive line of Hart cordless power tools, hand tools, OPE, and storage products?
Browsing around, I saw that there’s a Black & Decker 20V Max cordless drill kit, priced at $50.

A 5″ random orbit sander, priced at $35.
A 16′ and 25′ tape measure 2-pack, which seems overpriced at $19 for the pair.
A pair of plastic tool boxes, priced at $35. This also seems steep for what you get.
Here’s a 2-pack of organizers, priced at $17.50 “with deal.”
This Black & Decker 26″ steel 5-drawer ball bearing tool chest and cabinet combo is priced at $187 with shipping.
There are some cordless outdoor power tools, such as this blower kit priced at $124.
And even some power tool accessories, such as this drilling and driving bit set for $22.
Interesting.
There are more beyond by Black & Decker tools than just these, this is just a sampling that I found interesting and representative of their core types of offerings.
It’s not an expansive line of tools, and it wasn’t publicized at all outside of Amazon. Is this a quiet launch? Some kind of experiment?
There’s no home landing page yet, with Amazon’s brand page being mixed in with other Black & Decker tools that don’t seem to be exclusives.
Looking around, some of these new Amazon-exclusive Black & Decker tools resemble current non-exclusive offerings, but there are distinctions.
This will be interesting to watch, to see what comes of it – if anything. Is this the start of something new, or a fixed strategy with limited if not zero plans of expansion?

Looks like stuff B&D used to push at Walmart repackaged and refreshed a bit, since TTI’s Hart tools blitzed the Walmart shelves. I can’t imagine anyone would actively seek out B&D over Hart- It seems to me the main reason to buy Hart/B&D from Walmart is because you’re already there getting other stuff. Same situation at Amazon, someone might order a cheap B&D tool from Amazon because they were already ordering other things from Amazon. Just some thoughts. Is anyone getting excited about B&D tools?

Looks like Black and Decker is gone from Target at the least and replaced with a new line I hadn’t heard of. Definitely looks like they are reorganzing their placement.

Yep – my B&D SuperSawCat is at least that old. It still hold its own as a top notch sidewinder saw – great ergonomics/balance – very durable/powerful and electronic brake way ahead of its time. Build quality almost akin to something Mafell might produce today.
Skipping forward many years – and I’d say that their Alligator Loppers are a decent enough tool – offering some safety features by design – not available on some other small chainsaw cutters.

The Black & Decker Quantum line was very good. Many of the offerings were made by Elu in Europe. I have been using several of the Quantum plunge routers for years, each semi-permanently chucked with commonly used bits. They are tagged as made in Switzerland.

Initially anyway – you could see the Elu acquisition impact on Dewalt routers – many seemed to be direct copies. I’m not sure how (if at all) the Porter Cable (once the king of US routers) acquisition impacted Dewalt designs.

This is separate from b&d being on amazon but what value do they provide over harbor freight, I can get the better tools at the same price from them.

Because amazon is so easy and accessible to everyone. Every year there are thousands of young adults out there, in their first dorm/apartment/house/condo and they need a tool to complete a task. I would guess most of them don’t even know what Harbor Freight is, but they certainly know what amazon is. They search their tool, they see a name they recognize (Black + Decker), they order it. Simple as that.
You can’t look at everything from your own perspective.

I spend most of the time in San Francisco, CA (800K inhabitants, not too small, right). There is no Walmart in the city, and the nearest one I know of is about an hour drive from where I live. There should be a Harbor Freight store somewhere (relatively) nearby, but I haven’t seen one in the twenty years I live there. We have a single Lowe’s store in the city (which is 20-25 minute drive away; by bus it’s probably 40 minutes away), but there are two Home Depot locations very close to the south-western corner of the city.
At the same time, if I place on order on Amazon, I can definitely get my stuff in two days. In many cases – the next day. And sometimes, if I place an order early in the morning – late at night the same day. And, if it’s about tools, it might be B&D/Bosch/Dewalt/Hitachi/Makita/whatever else (notice absence of Milwaukee/Ryobi – for that I still need to get out, drive to Home Depot store nearby).

The Pepsi brand has no mention of Doritos, Gatorade, Tropicana, Quaker Oats, or their other brands in their name.
Kraft-Heinz doesn’t have Jell-O, Planters, Kool-Aid, CapriSun, Ore-Ida, Grey Poupon or other brands in their name.
When Stanley Works and Black & Decker merged, they became Stanley Black & Decker.

I think he’s talking about how it’s ironic that Stanley- Black and Decker bears the names of their lower end brands (except for Stanley tape measures and utility knives and blades).

Volkswagen owns Lamborghini and Ducati, not to metnion majority shares of Porsche and Audi. Is it ironic that they are simply called the Volkswagen Group since a Volkswagen is clearly lower quality than a Lamborghini? No, because Volkswagen is where the money is at.

In this particular case: Audi as an auto-maker has the longest history compared with the rest of the group, and Ferdinand Porsche was one of the founders / designer of the original Volkswagen. But I guess they use the latter as the Group name just because it’s a “people’s car”, if translated from German.

AUDI also sounds better and easier to roll off the tongue than Auto Union Deutschland Ingolstadt. The Union (“u” in the Audi name” and the four rings in their logo represent the four earlier companies that merged together in the 1930’s .

Dewalt was a struggling manufacturer – mostly known for their radial arm saws when Black & Decker acquired them from AMF in 1960. They way B&D turned the brand around into their flagship – starting in the 1990’s was a remarkable achievement – especially considering how B&D had nearly ruined the reputation of their own brand by selling all sorts of mass-market low-end tools.

Take your blinders off. There are many regions in the world outside the United States that both Black & Decker and Stanly are respected brands and have very respectable market share. …..and Dewalt is not even present!

Well taken – our USA-perspective is often too parochial and/or even xenophobic. We represent a decent share of the world’s GDP – but our 15% – still leaves 85% for the rest of the world.

For a second there I was hoping that B&D brought back that metal bodied cordless drill they had for their 75th anniversary. I would love to see another one of those as a 20v tool. I probably wouldn’t use it much, but I’d buy it, just becasue I liked the look of it.

Lowest cost possible, aimed squarely at people who think B&D still means quality.
This also means they’ll sell ton of it to people who hang a picture and “fix” their kid’s bike once a year.
