Amazon Tool Deals of the Day, 12/20/2016

Dec 20, 2016 Stuart 17 Comments

Oh yea! “Save up to 25% on top-selling tools.” This is it – the mega tool deals we’ve been waiting for Amazon to max out our credit cards with. Right? Eh.

These aren’t blisteringly hot deals, but they’re decent. The 3M WorkTunes hearing protector headphones is perhaps the best of the deals.

While these deals aren’t incredible, at least the name brand offerings are better than all the generic import stuff that’s been monopolizing the deal listing pages lately.

Side note: The 3M WorkTunes Bluetooth music-playing headphones are also on sale, for $10 lower than the price noted in Ben’s preview post earlier in the year.

These deals end at 3am ET 12/21/16, unless supplies run out sooner.

Stanley 92-824 Black Chrome and Laser Etched 69-Piece Socket Set

Stanley 92-824 Black Chrome and Laser Etched 69-Piece Socket Set

I have heard great things about Stanley’s black chrome socket set, at least as an entry-level set.

I stopped recommending Craftsman as the standard entry-level pick. I have zero experience with the new imported Craftsman stuff, and don’t see that changing anytime soon.

With there being fewer choices these days between dirt-cheap and premium-priced socket sets, maybe I should give Stanley a try. Maybe I’ll order a set for testing. Yes? No?

I like the Amazon description – Style: Amateur.

Black & Decker ASI300 Air Station High Performance Inflator

Black & Decker ASI300 Air Station High Performance Inflator

This seems like a compact and less-trouble inflator, although user reviews are a little mixed.

Keep your expectations reasonable. It’s not going to be great for filling up flat tires, but might be decent for seasonal adjustments.

I have that Stanley set in a husky re-brand and leave it in my car, so far I have liked it. Tbh I actually prefer the black chrome look to the shiny chrome one.

I have had the Black and Decker air compressor for about 6? years. I keep it in my car all the time. It’s really lightweight but can fill tires fairly well. I have not used it on a fully flat tire but I have gone from ~26# – 38# with it in a few minutes. It will also run off a car power socket as well.

It is quite loud, though that’s probably true of any Pump that small.

I have that little Black and Decker air compressor. I’ve owned it for around 7 years now. It’s not the fastest thing, but it works. It has an auto-off setting, which can be hard to find on some of the higher end ARB and Viair models (unless you want to pay a premium.)

I can inflate my Cherokee’s 30″ tires to 38lbs in about 5-7 minutes per tire. I’m definitely pushing it’s limits, but it does the job.

I got the Viair 88P when it was on sale for around $50. It’s pretty quiet. It’s definitely have a premium feel to it. Both the power cord and the air hose are really long. It doesn’t have the auto off feature though. I have had that auto off feature on one of my craftsman air compressor back in the day. It’s a neat feature to have.

Since Craftsman sockets have gone to China, I’ve noticed that Menards carries US-made Masterforce-branded sockets in the same price range, for those looking to fill that void. Any idea on who makes these for Masterforce and/or how they match up?

I was wondering the same thing. They carry them openstock directly inline with Gearwrench. So, Apex maybe?

I’ve never understood the “turns on when the power goes out” flashlights. Especially these days when flashlights are so much better than when I was a kid and they all sucked always.

If it’s dark when the power goes out at home, chances are we’re asleep and don’t need the light. And we have several reliable flashlights in easy to find drawers, awake or not.

I can see them being useful in windowless interior rooms, but when I’m working in those kinds of spaces I have little lights stashed in my tool/equipment bags anyway.

Do others find these (generic emergency lights) attractive or potentially useful? In what scenarios?

Generally power outages are not predictable so being prepared for the event of loosing power isn’t always possible. For me, the power generally goes out and I’m in pitch black in the middle of a room etc and have to fumble around to actually “find” the flashlight. The turns on when power goes out at least gives you a pretty instantaneous director to where the flashlight is. Sure if it goes out when you’re asleep it may seem kinda counter intuitive. However also consider that of the power goes out what “alarm” will wake you up to that fact?

Being a flashlight junkie(not completely but i have many nice lights) i like them. I always have a PD10 in my pocket AND my phone and i still like them- id pick up a couple if they were like $7-9 which is what i feel like that light is worth.

I am not a flashlight junkie by any mean but I do own a good amount of flashlights. Like Pete I also own several nicer flashlight (Nitecore, Fenix). With that said we do have several emergency night light spreading though out the house.

Most of the one that I have seen including the one that Stuart mentioned here double duty as a night light. They usually have an auto mode that turn it on automatically when it’s dark regardless of whether the power is out or not and the emergency mode that turn on automatically when the power goes out. So they work great as a backup flashlight when I need one in a pinch but for the most part they function well as nightlight that continue to work even if the power is down.

I don’t find them useful. If the power goes out, I have my cell phone next to my bed and that works fine as an emergency flashlight.

It’s worth noting the Stanley 92-824 is a 6 point socket set. A plus in my opinion instead of those 12 point “universal sets” that seem to take over during the holiday season. They’re getting harder and harder to find. Kudos to that set.

Ditto on the Menard’s tools. I still don’t understand how Sears could take a 90 year old American Icon and literally destroy it’s value, history, reputation and legacy overnight by offshoring it’s tools.. USA Made is what Craftsman stood for. It was what brought guys like me into Sears in the first place. American Made Craftsman Tools…. It just breaks my heart. Still. And no, I’m not going to Grainger or the Summit catalog to get the “industrial” equivalent of what for decades you could buy up the street at Sears.

Menard’s was smart to capitalize on this. They filled the void Craftsman/Sears left. American Made at a fair price. Menard’s also sells Whirlpool (Kenmore) appliances, Die Hard batteries and now clothes. Might as well be Sears.

I think the emergency flashlights depend on your power grid. Where I live the power isn’t the cleanest with regards to surge and brownout conditions but it rarely goes down without human or critter interference. A couple years back a racoon offed itself and blew up and transformer that blacked out half the down. That was bad. But most are more isolated. And the occasional upgrading of the services to the area. Maybe down 2 or 3 times a year. Usually for not much time but shit happens.
If you were in an area where you were out monthly or something then they might be better in that situation but I think it’s very dependent on the grid in your area.
