American Hammer 8oz Brass Hammer Review

Reader JD was kind enough to share a very detailed review of a recently purchased 8oz brass American Hammer with us. If you recall, American Hammer is currently holding a direct-sales promotion and has heavily discounted many of their hammers.

As posted on ToolGuyd, I took American Hammer up on their offer for any hammer (under 2lbs.) for $25 shipped. When I browsed their website I was like a kid in a candy store. Which metal? Which handle? Which weight? I’m not a machinist or metallurgist, just your average DIY’er and weekend mechanic kind of guy. The brass hammers intrigued me since I started making red oak dice with brass rod inserts for the divots. Finally I chose the 8 ounce brass hammer.

The hammer arrived well packaged and bubble wrapped in its own little black box. The hammer is just shy of 6 inches. It’s solid cast brass and weighs in at 9.3 ounces. The hammer is smooth with no rough edges. A nice polish finished it all up. The hammer feels good in the hand and is well balanced. I had no problems tapping in 1/4″ brass rod inserts on a new set of dice I’m working on.

As you can see in the photos, the brass hammer is a sight to behold. I almost want to display it on my desk at work. My only quibble is the plastic American name tag. Eventually the tag will probably fall off. I think it would be better if American Hammer had their name cast in the handle instead of the plastic tag.

In conclusion, I’m impressed with this little brass hammer. It’s hard to go wrong with a quality made American product.

Many thanks to JD for sharing his review with us so that we could share it with you. Credit for the photos also go to JD, so thank you for that as well.

Wow!! It does look nice and it would make a nice display. I want one!…j/k
I took a look at their website also. There are a lot of choices. So many to choose from that I couldn’t decide. Maybe I’ll take a second look.
Thanks JD for the review and the pictures. Enjoy that hammer!

I’m overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choices available in this promo. Can you suggest a good all around hammer for a DIYer and wannabe motorcycle mechanic?

I’m not sure about motorcycle maintenance, but for general garage and automotive work, a 3lb lead hammer and 1.5 lb brass hammer is recommended.

Personally, I’m interested in American Hammer’s 1.5 lb copper hammer since it’s a bit softer than brass and should be more suitable for work on aluminum.

I read about this promotion and had been in the market for a bronze hammer. I contacted Ted to see what was still available and fortunately he still had Bronze 1.5 pound hammers with an aluminum handle available. AM15BZAG – 1.5 BRONZE I purchased one immediately. I have only had a couple of opportunities to use it but so far it has been great. I find that I grab this hammer over my old faithful small sledge. I do a lot of work on motorcycles and am enjoying not having the concerns about sparks on top of not marring surfaces. My machinist friends are all wishing they had jumped on the offer.
