Shop Class as Soulcraft an Inquiry Into the Value of Work Cover

We’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work, so we figured it’s about time that we mentioned it.

An essay adapted from the book by the author, Matthew Crawford, was published by the NY Times in late-May, and offers an excellent idea about what Shop Class as Soulcraft is about. The essay is not exactly a quick read, but it’s much shorter than the book.

We also strongly encourage you to read a review of the book, also published in the NY Times.

This genuinely sounds like a good read. I read through the NY Times review and they had a lot of good things to say about it. My problem is that I just don’t have the time to read books like this. I love books and reading in general. When I travelled a lot, I would bring a book or two along and read on the flight. Now I barely get to look at the new Northern Tools catalog before bed.

    Flathead,

It may just be me, but I thought that the review subtly mocked the book at times, and still cannot tell if it is overly positive or negative in tone. Still, it offers a very detailed description of the book, which might help sway undeciders towards or away from it.

Thanks for the info. I read the NY times piece. Really fascinating and hits home. I would be much happier building something instead of what I do now.
