Thorsen Dog Bone Wrench Sets at Costco

Jul 26, 2010 Stuart 1 Comment

After we posted about Channellock’s Mutli-Fit wrench set and Alex’s heads-up about Craftsman’s Dog Bone wrench set sale, Jeff spotted the Thorsen-branded Dog Bone multi-socket set at Costco. At $15-20 each, Dog Bone wrenches are a tough sell for a number of reasons. But $17 for the set of SAE and metric wrenches? That’s much more tempting. […]

Milwaukee’s New M12 Palm Nailer, Universal Multi-Tool & More!

Jul 23, 2010 Stuart 4 Comments

Well, it looks like most of our Milwaukee M12 predictions were wrong. We’re not at Milwaukee’s press event, but other channels are, and they’ve provided early details about some of Milwaukee’s hot new releases. Milwaukee is expanding their already huge selection of M12 12-volt lithium ion compact cordless tools with a palm nailer, hammer drill, […]

Cheap Multifunction Oscillating Tools – Hit or Miss?

Jul 22, 2010 Stuart 19 Comments

There are quite a few multifunction oscillating tools on the market these days. Some are built by well known and reputable brands – Fein (the original), Rockwell, Bosch, Dremel, Ridgid, and Craftsman, but there are also generic branded import tools popping up at more and more retailers these days. Amazon recently started promoting the Genesis […]

Johnson Bubble & Visual Level Apps for Android

Jul 22, 2010 Stuart 2 Comments

Johnson Level offers two free leveling apps for Android smart phones – a bubble level and a visual level. The bubble level functionality is not anything new, but Johnson’s version offers larger visuals and angular deviation measurements. The second app, a visual level, overlays a moveable horizontal and vertical alignment crosshair over a real-time photo of […]

Porter Cable Cordless 18V Circular Saw Review

Jul 21, 2010 Stuart 6 Comments

As you may recall, we’ve been reviewing the various tools included in Porter Cable’s Lithium-ion cordless tool kit. Today, we’re going to be reviewing their cordless 6-1/2″ circular saw. I’ve got to hand it to the engineers over at Porter Cable – their 18V lithium-ion cordless drill driver really blew our expectations out of the water. Build quality, […]

Channellock Ratcheting Wrenches

Jul 21, 2010 Stuart 2 Comments

Soon after we posted about Channellock’s Dog Bone style wrenches, I thought back to a few months ago when I spotted Channellock-branded ratcheting wrenches. These wrenches were also found at a discount wholesale club, and although I don’t recall the exact price, it was possibly in the $25-30 range for the 7-piece set.

“Woodworkers Guild of America” – Stop Mailing Me!!

Jul 21, 2010 Stuart 20 Comments

Okay, so a few months ago I started receiving junk mail from the Woodworkers Guild of America. It all began with a “free gift” DVD that I promptly threw out. The fine print said to keep it without obligation, return it, or discard it. Since then, I’ve been receiving “return the DVD or pay for it” […]

15 Cheapo Flashlights for $15 at Home Depot

Jul 20, 2010 Stuart 6 Comments

Over at my local Home Depot, I spotted a display of 15 cheap flashlights for $15. Each flashlight features 6 LEDs, and batteries are included. These are similar to the generic flashlights sold at Amazon, Meritline, and Harbor Freight. These flashlights aren’t reliable enough to count on in an emergency situation, nor are they durable enough […]

Milwaukee M12 Compact Cordless Tool Predictions

Jul 20, 2010 Stuart Discuss

Thinking about the many compact cordless tools out there, I just realized that Mikwaukee’s M12 screwdriver is getting a bit long in the tooth. It’s still a highly successful tool that earned itself a very solid reputation, but spec-wise its age is starting to show.

Husqvarna’s rechargeable battery-powered robotic AutoMowers are designed to provide a quiet hands-free mowing experience. AutoMowers are capable of handling lawns from 0.15 to 0.75 acres, depending on the model. There’s even a hybrid AutoMower that’s partially powered with solar panels.

I’ve noticed Wiha’s Chip Lifter mini pry bars before, but hadn’t really given them much thought. These chip lifters are designed and properly sized to be used for the removal of IC chips and other electronics components. Reader JeffD wrote in about his experience with these mini prying bars:

Jul 19, 2010 Stuart 1 Comment

Over at the ShopNGarage, Steve posted about a nifty tip pulled from his forum’s Shop Tips thread. Always keep a chip brush in your blasting cabinet to clean abrasive off of parts and the inside of the cabinet door. Such a simple practice can really help keep cleanup time and effort at a minimum. Check out the […]

Bosch PS21 & PS31 Cordless Drivers & Drill Hands-on Review

Jul 16, 2010 Stuart 18 Comments

Bosch’s new generation of compact lithium-ion cordless tools offers more speed, more power, greater comfort, and ridiculously lightweight and compact packages. After using the new PS21 pocket driver and PS31 3/8″ drill/driver for a few projects, my impression of the tools is even better than expected! Given the two tools’ core design similarities, they are both discussed […]

I had to punch holes in a steel computer case earlier so that it could accommodate a new case fan. Sure, I could have used a drill, but I reached for my Roper Whitney No. 5 Jr hand punch. Gosh, it’s a great tool.

Channellock Multi-Fit (Dog Bone) Socket Wrenches

Jul 15, 2010 Stuart 5 Comments

Spotted these Channellock-branded “Multi-Fit 8-in-1” dog bone socket wrenches over at the local BJs Wholesale Club. If I recall correctly, the set was around $20 or less. You won’t find these tools in Channellock’s main catalog, and they’re not made in the USA, but they seem to be of reasonable quality.

The other day there was a thread over at the Garage Journal polling members about whether they preferred quantity or quality when it comes to tools. As much as I prefer to use better quality tools, there are times when quantity and selection are a higher priority.
