Bosch UK is coming out with a new sanding roller, model PRR 250 ES, that can be used with different abrasive wheels for quick and efficient material removal and surface preparation.
The new sanding roller is said to be great for use on furniture components and walls that would otherwise require hand sanding. It can be used with sanding sleeves (for working on flat even surfaces), flap sanding wheels (for uneven surfaces), conical sanding sleeves (for details) and a 10mm wide brass wire brush (for rust removal and cleaning metal) will also be available.
The 250 Watt corded sander operates at 1,600 – 3,000 RPM and comes with a removable protective guard with built-in vacuum dust port. The kit also includes a carrying case, 60mm 80 grit sanding sleeve with a matching shank (drum?), as well as 10mm and 60mm flap sanding wheels.

With its paint roller-type ergonomics, the sanding roller looks to be quite natural and comfortable to use.
MSRP is 139.99 euros including VAT, with a retail ETA of July 2013 in Europe.
Bosch describes the sander as a universal tool with interchangeable attachments, but for a tool like this I would recommend sticking with matching Bosch accessories to avoid any potential incompatibilities.

I hope this makes it over to the USA. I doubt it will see mainstream popularity, but if/when this goes below $60 on clearance, I’ll buy two. I could even see myself picking up a cordless version since I’m already well-entrenched into the Bosch pocket driver ecosystem (and the body shape lends itself to that style nicely).
Does anyone know of a pneumatic version of this concept, or is Bosch doing something truly innovative here?

A right angle die grinder could provide similar wheel angling, although it’s not quite the same.
John Sullivan
You’re right, but the balance is all wrong. Maybe if I secure a second handle onto the die grinder I could get something workable, but it lacks the elegance that the Bosch offering seems to have. Similar results can be had with a lot of tools in the right hands, I’m sure… but the appeal of this is the belt-sander-like orientation of the flap sander and small diameter vs. broad face of the wheel. Sometimes it’s nice to have something else in the arsenal.

We’ve used a somewhat similar looking set of abrasive drums that come with a Fein kit (WPO12-27 or WPO12-25) that is designed for metal polishing – and we find useful in our pipe fabrication shop. We also have a Makita Wheel Sander #9741 (part of Makita’s line of timber framing tools) that accommodates 4.5 inch wide abrasive wheels.
This Bosch tool – might be a useful smaller cousin to these tools.

The reason it may not be offered in the US in my opinion is that my client holds the US utility patent on a similar technology in the US. This is a miniature version of the Roller Sander + that was discussed with Bosch earlier this year .

bosch said its SDS system has been patented, is it true? why could’nt i find the patent?

Bosch copied a product invention that they reviewed. They totally changed the design and really lost the function of the tool. Sad day for Bosch.
