Jan 22, 2010 Stuart Discuss

The first user reviews of the Paulding Hammer have started pouring in. Here is what Sam S. shared with us via a comment about The Hammer: I purchased one of the pre-production models of this hammer from Paulding and consider it the finest of my tools, and I have no light weight assembly of tools… […]

A Preview of the Spectacular Paulding Hammer

Jan 19, 2010 Stuart 13 Comments

The Hammer, designed and crafted by John Paulding, is by far one of the most magnificent tools that we have ever laid our eyes upon. Still, merely describing The Hammer as a machinists hammer, as exemplary as it is, would never do it justice. Not just a tool, The Hammer is a work of art!

Quick Review of Superior Tool ST-2000 Pipe Cutter

Jan 14, 2010 Stuart 4 Comments

I needed to make two cuts in a length of 1″ Schedule 40 galvanized steel pipe, and did not have the tools available to do so. There are many hand and power tools that would have been appropriate for a job like this: an angle grinder, chop saw, metal cutting circular saw, snap pipe cutters, rotary pipe […]

Jan 7, 2010 Stuart 1 Comment

Channellock recently announced a new smaller sized V-Jaw tongue and groove plier. Similar in design to its larger brethren, the pocket-sized 6-1/2″ 412 plier is better suited for smaller or reduced access jobs.

Kershaw E.T. External Toggle Knife

Nov 16, 2009 Stuart 2 Comments

Kershaw’s E.T. external toggle knife is one sleek looking blade. Relatively lightweight at 3.7 ounces, the E.T. features a 6061-T6 anodized aluminum handle, and 3-1/4″ Sandvik 13C26 stainless steel blade with a bead-blasted finish. These are decent specs, but what really sets this knife apart from ordinary pocket folders is its unique toggle mechanism.

Plaid Duck Duct Tape!

Oct 22, 2009 Stuart 12 Comments

That’s right, we found some PLAID Duck-branded duct tape. The pictured 10-yard roll was close to $4 at Target. $4 for 10 yards is far from a bargain since you can get twice as much tape for the price if you opt for a more conservative color, and even more if you go with traditional […]

Delta has recently introduced a new line of premium full-kerf saw blades. These premium blades are designed with several ‘practical blade enhancements,’ such as: a 50% increase in the size of carbide to allow for additional re-sharpenings, refined geometries for an improved cut, and reduced noise for a quieter cut. Swanson Speed Squares

Jul 23, 2009 Stuart 4 Comments

Swanson Speed Squares can be used as a try square, miter square, protractor, line scriber, and saw guide. In other words, it’s a pretty handy layout tool that should be found in every home and shop. At the very least, it makes an excellent straightedge. We’ve been using an orange Swanson Speedlite square for about […]

Kershaw Onion Leek Pocket Knife

Jun 10, 2009 Stuart 1 Comment

So I received my new Kershaw Onion Leek pocket knife the other day. I needed (wanted) a new pocket knife, and spent quite some time narrowing down the options. It was a tough choice to make, but I ultimately chose the stainless steel Leek since it seemed to best fit my needs. Following is a partial […]

Xuron Precision Pliers, Shears, & Scissors

Jun 8, 2009 Stuart Discuss

Xuron produces superb precision tools – we love their pliers, shears, and scissors. Xuron tools are durable, comfortable to use, provide exceptional performance, are very affordable, and are made in the USA. Our favorite Xuron tools are their non-serrated short nose pliers (pictured above), fiber cutters, and tweezer nose pliers. We are also huge fans of Xuron’s flush-cut micro shears (also […]

There’s Nothing Like a Good Dead Blow

Apr 6, 2009 Stuart Discuss

The main advantages of a dead-blow over a standard rubber mallet are the reduction of recoil and increase in striking control. The dead-blow excels in loosening stuck or stubborn parts, and also comes in handy when a breaker bar cannot provide enough leverage to turn a fastener by itself. Stanley’s 21oz Compo-Cast is my dead-blow of choice, […]

Lee Valley’s Wire Management Hooks

Mar 13, 2009 Stuart 1 Comment

We found these wire management hooks over at Lee Valley, and their simplicity betrays their utility. Sure there are cheaper or elaborate options out there, but at less than $3 apiece, these hooks offer the perfect balance between economy and efficiency.
