Fixed-Blade Knife for Shop Use?

Just thinking aloud: are there any legitimate home or shop uses for a fixed-blade knife? Knives like these are great for camping and other outdoor activities, but what else can they be used for?

The Gerber LMF II, such as the one pictured above, has been on my wishlist for about two years now. The only thing holding me back is the lack of a solid reason as to why I need one.

I wonder how many utility and survival knife purchases are motivated by primal urges and desires, as opposed to genuine need.

When describing their “hacking knife” (LINK) Lee Valley claims “trimming tubing, splitting hardwood wedges, cutting soft steel pins, removing window putty, or anything else requiring brute force.” In their picture, they show a user hitting the back edge of the blade with a hammer to drive it into wood. I wouldn’t do that to a folding knife *or* to the Gerber ‘survival’ knife, but I can definitely imagine need to do it with *something*.

Eeyore, you definitely have a point there. There’s something to be said about having a knife that can stand up to use that would destroy or severely damage an ordinary knife.
