  1. I’d put it in the wife’s car. We always seem to be in her conveyance when I need tools on the go.

    So we are to leave two comments on this post? Usually that voids our TG giveaway entries. As an aside, I can’t believe how the Kobalt Double Drive giveaway just blew up on TG. Everyone and their brother entered that thing. Google search results for “kobalt double drive” sure don’t hurt you either.

  6. The tool that catches my interest the most is the updates to the oscillating multi-tool. I have the first gen and the hex nut is bodged up so badly. The tool-less mechanism and QuickBoost charger are welcome improvements. They fixed the things that needed fixing. Otherwise it’s a fantastic tool still.

  7. This is a great set. Has many size adapters for socket-to-ratchet fits. Would be a nice gift to myself.

    As for the Sears Catalog–the battery tool set with 19 watts-and the band saw are what would be nice to have.

  11. Craftsmen makes great tools and I have broken a few. All have been replaced with no issue. I look forward to using the Max Axess kit for years to come. I want all of them!

  13. Been looking @ the Max Axess set for some time now, if i won that set i would put them to work on bolting some rebar (usually use the craftsmen or a gear-wrench cross-force ratcheting wrench for the job) down to some sill plates or rebar and steel beams (rebar to long to use deep socket use)

    After going trough the x-mass catalog 2-things caught my eyes.
    1. E-Z Red 12-in-1 wrench set, looks funky and cool @ the same time would love to know about their performance.
    2. Craftsmen premium ratchets, I got the 1/2″ and I like it alot been wanting the 3/8″ but I am more curious to know if they would add a stubby in this style or a flex-headed one. The premium line needs to expand.

  14. 1) The max axcess is a great idea and is obviously a better choice than a standard deep socket in many cases.

    2)I’d love to upgrade to an assurelink garage door opener. I’m always wondering whether I accidentally left it open.

    The Sears holiday tool catalog is chock-full of things I’d like, but I really want a new air compressor – the 25-gallon professional model would be more than adequate for my needs, and I’d much rather have a traditional piston pump than an oilless model.

  18. The Max Axess socket set is a tool I’ve been thinking about buying myself for a little while now. Seeing it in a black friday ad for next week was pushing me closer to pulling the trigger. First project in mind is using it along with Unistrut and threaded rod to build a storage platform over my garage door.

    The tool in the 2011 Christmas Catalog that catches my eye is the Toughbuilt tool belt and storage system. Seems like the it would be most useful for having a core group of tools to support individual tool kits i.e. a tape, hammer, utility knife, etc. on a belt pouch that can be clipped onto bags set up specifically for plumbing, electrical, interior trim and so on. Thanks Stuart – Now you’ve got me re-thinking my current system of Craftsman toolboxes for various tool kits.

    The craftsman 35 led rechargable worklight caught my eye, with the sun setting at 4 pm these days , need all the extra light I can get to extend the working day.

  22. Good news! I have had my eye on these for awhile. That single kit may replace my need for a large socket set. Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before? This is definitely one of Craftsman’s more innovative offerings.

  25. Now THIS would be a great win! Too often I’ve misjudged the length of a bolt and it bottomed out in the bottom of a socket. As far as the Sears catalog, the most intriguing thing (and one I hope will be a ‘secret’ Black Friday deal) for me is the ‘Stadium’ top chest that looks like a Craftsman-branded version of the Montezuma.

  28. I would really like to know how this compared to the Gearwrench sets.

    The new craftsman tool that intrigues me in the catalog is still the jawhorse. I cannot bring myself to plunk down the cash for it. But I really want to see the craftsman version of this one that appears in their black friday ad.

  29. about twenty years (i think) i purchased a set called “O wrench”. it is the same basic idea, tho the “max axess” could possibly be an improvement on it. i have reach for exactly 1 time in the twenty or so years since i got it.

    would i like to own this set, sure as a win or gift but probable wouldn’t buy it myself.

  30. This is a great kit, with all of the sockets you typically use, and then some. Ninety per cent of the time, sockets from 3/8″ to 3/4″ (and their metric equivalents) are what you need. Having some above and below that expands your range of capability. Including both standard and metric sockets makes this a killer set, whether it’s in your trunk or as your primary set. You never know these days what type of fasteners you’ll encounter on a repair job. I like the ergo ratchets, and the drive sizes (1/4″ and 3/8″) cover most of my needs. Not having to carry additional deep sockets for the times you’d need them makes this a great package for the money.

  35. Personally it’s another thing that I’ll likely keep in the car for those “just in case” situations. That and I anticipate being called on to help repair my friends’ things—being ready to help at a moment’s notice is always good.

    As for the tool catalogue, I can honestly say that I like the work lights. Though I’m having a difficult time picking between the 80 LED rechargeable one or the 35 LED Stick Light with a magnetic mount.

  54. The fact that you can get so many sizes in such a low profile and not necessarily need a specific sized ratcheting wrench is nice. Also the compact box to carry them to a job, instead of needing to drag a big tool box when you aren’t sure what size you may need makes it handier.

  56. Finally Sears has gotten around to upgrading their case. This is something of a specialty tool set, so it’s nice to see a case that has some quality instead of the old blow-molded cases with the hinges that fail after a few uses. This case looks like it has some quality to it, and will last for years to come.

    I have several items I would like from the Sears tool catalog. I could especially use some of the larger pry bars. Hmmm – maybe I’ll go see if they are on sale right now…

  59. I have been telling people about these for quite sometime. They are not just some specialty tool to be stuffed in the back, collect dust, and be forgotten about.

    They serve great as a primary toolkit around the house, in the car, or for a new apprentice.

    When they are viewed as a specialty tool, they end up in the back, and you forget you have them when you really could have used them. Compact size allows you to carry a “lot” of tools in a small space.

  61. These things would be awesome for working on cars. There are just way to many tight spaces in the engine compartment these days.
    I’ve been thinking about jumping on some of the nextec tools from the catalog. The price is pretty good on those.

  67. I like the pass trough feature of the new Max Axess socket set! It should make this set very useful in a lot of repair situations. Would be a great “road” tool set too, lots of uses without lots of sockets. I would like to take a set out for a “test drive”!

  68. This looks like it would be a lifesaver for me. I deal with a lot of strange access situations working in a plant that was designed prior to WWII and has been continuously “improved” since.

  69. Craftsman Holiday catalog items on my wish list this year so far: 19.2 Impact wrench and Impact Driver, Premium Ratchets.

    Would also like to see the Ratcheting Clench wrench in person.

  70. I have been helping my 8 year old grandson build a tool box. This would be his best acquisition by far. He would be thrilled! We’ll use it for our projects in the garage. So far we’ve built a motorcycle out of VCR parts, which turned out great and we rebuilt and repainted a vintage fan. I’d like to find a small engine to tear down. I’ve seen these tools and am already a Craftsman fan. My grandson will be too.

  71. Honestly I looked at the catalog and I’d still pick the Max Axess – I liked the black ones. I need the “axess” to get the battery tight on my motorcycle!!!

  72. I’d love to win one of these sets b/c I can see so many useful applications for it! I’m getting my M.Arch degree and frequently am relegated to designing and building portions of my studio projects and they’re not always “standard” in their design and development.   73. looks to be a very useful set for tight spaces, that’s like replacing 50 ratcheting wrenches and 50 low profile sockets!!

    also from the catalog the Crescent Rapid Slide adjustable wrench looks to be really nice and a really time saver 😉

    I was going to take a quick look at the Sears catalog, but I spent almost an hour digging thru it.

    Best two things I saw were the ball peen hammer set with hickory handles and the 19.2 impact driver (amazing torque rating for such a small tool too).

    I’m giving serious thought to adding a camera system to my gear stable. The remote screen would really save me a bit of work.

    Now, if Sears would just stock some of this stuff in my local store so I could check it out in person (with money in hand) I’d be thrilled.

    As far as where and how I would use the Max Access socket set, I’m building an overhead storage platform in my shop. It will be suspended on all thread rod and unistrut, with a servo motor raising and lowering it as needed.

    44 pieces of all thread, 5 different thread sizes, with various lengths from one foot to 48 inches. I’ve really been dreading tackling this job with a wrench. The Max Access would be tremendously convenient, plus the cool factor alone is off the charts.

    I’m known by all for getting my moped to go 60.8mph( you know, not scooters, the with pedals! )
    I love wrenching on everything and I would use this set every day. Actually just lost my craftsman 7/16 3/8 socket a few days ago, and I am disgusted with myself, I hope it shows up on the garage floor somewheres or I guess this high tech set would really cheer me up.

  94. Very cool! I’m a general contractor, tools are a part of my everyday life, So I can think of a hundred ways I would use this! I usually stay clear of craftsman power tools, weight and size wise they are awkward and heavy for woman’s hands, so my Makita 18v lithium gets daily abuse. But taking taking a look at the Sears catalog has peaked my curiosity about craftsman’s version of the lithium powered cordless tools. I may have to check out how their weight and size compares to others again.

  101. I do all of my own work on my vehicles. If I had this set, I could have swapped out my own transfer case instead of taking it to mechanic. This is the coolest tool set I have ever seen. Can’t wait to get my hands on this

  104. I would love a Craftsman Air Impact Wrench and Sockets.

  105. I have a small version of this set that I picked up in an auto parts store – I think it was ‘Performance Tools’ branded. These have come in REALLY handy in various projects where even a deep well socket is too shallow. When I have some task to do outside of the house involving a fastener, it is the first thing I throw into the tote of tools I’m bring with me. VERY useful for tightening chain link fence nuts because of the depth issue. These things are better than deep wells if you can use them because the torque you are applying (assuming no extension is in use) is closest to the nut meaning you don’t need an extra hand to keep the top of the socket wrench perpendicular to the work while applying torque. I’m sure the Craftsman branded set is of higher quality, and would make a superb gift.

    I am most interested in the #009-44043 Gearwrench flexible head ratcheting wrenches from the Christmas catalog (Page 17). These things will come in very handy working with automotive repairs because of the way things are crammed into the engine compartment these days. You should see some of the weird creations I have made with wobble extensions and universal joints to remove or tighten fasteners that would be easy to get with a slight flex on the head of a standard box wrench. I also believe a subset of this set is on the Sears Black Friday sale, and would also make a good gift. I’d go with the Metric set here because that is what automotive fasteners are these days and I can’t think of many cases where I’d need these for an SAE fastener…

  107. I want this set because not only does it look and feeel good but it comes in handy in certain vehicle applications. Most recently I was doing struts on a 98 Camry and needed to remove the stabilizer bar links. The ball joint kept turning with the nut. The repair manual said I could hold down the center of the stud with a 5mm hex. I borrowed my friends MaxAxess set and was able to remove the nut while holding the center with a hex. The set helped me make quick work of that nut. 🙂

    I have very few high quality tools which can make my work (maintenance) quite frustrating at times.

    Multi-functional tools are the way of the future. Who wants to carry a 100lb bag of tools around when you can easily have just a few tools that can do the jobs of all of them instead? Craftsman has it down when it comes to innovation. That ratcheting clench wrench and the 8 in one ratcheting one are simply brilliant. I can’t wait to see what else they come up with to add to my collection.

  136. My dad started me out with a Craftsman screwdriver set when I was about 12 years old. He taught me to save my pennies and buy a few quality tolls, rather than a bunch of cheaper ones, and I slowly built my collection. Now, at 46, there’s little in my tool chest and chest that isn’t Craftsman.

    I saw the Axess set in the Craftsman Club fyer that arrived today, planning to add a set to my Christmas list. Before commiting, I got on Tool Guyd to see if there were any reviews, found this article, and here I am.

    I’d really like to add a set to my arsenal. These would be great for tight spots working on the vehicles where a standard ratchet/socket combination just won’t fit.

  159. That max axess set looks pretty useful. I used one to get to a rear strut tower bolt on my WRX. Not sure what else I could have used since deep sockets wouldn’t fit, and wrenchs didn’t have the clearance to turn.

    Personally, i’m looking forward to a review on the new long pattern double box end “raised panel” wrenchs, part # 40012 and 40013. The look like something i’d want.

  163. I would like to upgrade my mismatched socket set at home with a max axess set. I use the sockets to fix my kid’s bikes (and their friend’s –lazy dads!), change the oil on the cars, and whatever else comes my way.

    One of my favorite tools in the catalog is the G2 Nextec drill and quickboost charger. I had the G1 drill and loved it, but sold it so I could get a G2.

  171. I put new sidesteps on my wife’s Element last week. I could have used the low profile as a few of the bolts were in such a tight spot, I couldn’t get to them with a regular ratchet. I resorted to a regular wrench which took forever to do!

  189. This max access socket set looks like it could come in handy in those cases where I’ve got a threaded fitting to loosen or tighten and I need the socket close to the base of the fitting for leverage. Tightening air fittings on to air tools is a good example.

  208. I purchased one for my father inlaw for father’s day. Who has owned a successfull transmission shop for over 40 years. He motorcycles monthly and I hope the Max Axess socket set will make a great travel companion. Oh yes, I hope to be a big hit with my father inlaw.
