In case you missed our teaser post yesterday, Dewalt is launching a new line of compact 12V MAX lithium ion cordless power tools! Designed from the ground up with end users in mind, these tools really do exemplify Dewalt’s attention to detail and insistence on perfection.
Although my hands-on time with the new tools was very brief and set in a controlled environment, I was left very impressed with and optimistic about them. Over the next few days I will talk a bit about all of the new tools separately, starting with this preview that summarizes the product line.

7 Tools Will Be Included in the Initial Release
- 1/4” Screwdriver ( DCF610S2)
- 3/8” Drill/Driver ( DCD710S2)
- 1/4” Impact Driver ( DCF815S2)
- 3/8” Impact Wrench ( DCF813S2)
- LED Work Light ( DCL510)
- Inspection Camera ( DCT410S1)
- Infrared Thermometer ( DCT414S1)
- Two combo kits will provide drill/driving tools at a better value (DCK210S2 and DCK211S2)
Common Features
With the exception of the flashlight, all of Dewalt’s newest 12V Max cordless tools feature the same patent-pending handle design. Dewalt’s product managers were very proud of the new handle geometry, and they should be – its ergonomics were phenomenal!
Dewalt designed the 12V MAX handle with a bottom-attaching battery rather than a handle-insertable one so that the tools can stand up when not being used. Not only does this mean that the tools are always at the ready, it means that less homeowners will have to suffer the sight of tools resting on top of brand new or expensive sinks, countertops, and furniture.
If you’re wondering why the new line is dubbed 12V MAX, the 12V part refers to the maximum no-load battery voltage. The nominal operational voltage of the battery is 10.8V. This 12V/10.8V labeling consistent with nearly every other competitors’ marketing practices.

Ah, whoops, left that part out, didn’t I!
The new product line should hit stores in October 2010, although it may be subject to change. I think that a product manager said mid-September, but the head honchos kept repeating “October” and “4th quarter”.

Too bad I just upgraded all my 12v (10.8v) tools. Hard to justify buying more…….then again I know you can never have enough tools! I do like the idea of the impact wrench though…hmmm

I spoke to a Dewalt rep at Home Depot today, He had a demo display of the new 12v system, I liked how small they were and the power was pretty good for their size. I was told Oct. for the debut, the Depot will carry both the 2 piece sets and Lowes will carry the whole line. Was told the 2 piece 1/4 set w/batteries and charger will run $199.00.

Bob, thanks for the update! That about sounds right, but I wasn’t aware that only Lowes would carry the entire lineup.
