Over at Amazon, today’s deal of the day is a Dewalt 20V Max lawn & garden bundle, including their brushless string trimmer, blower, a charger, and 5Ah battery pack.
The blower is pretty darned good. I have a test sample from when it first came out, and it’s one of few lawn & garden tools that have earned a place in the long-term tester stable. I’m strongly considering buying this combo set as for-keeps equipment.

No, it’s not as powerful as larger and beefier units on the market, but it’s light, easily maneuvered, and very capable. I use it for blowing dust out the door (and definitely wear safety goggles for this), sawdust off table saws being used or tested outside, powdered snow off my windshield, and every so often for light leaf-clearing.
Its variable speed motor can deliver up to 500 CFM of air at 90 MPH.
I haven’t tested the Dewalt 20V Max brushless string trimmer, but its reviews seem decent enough. Most of the negative user reviews focus on how it’s a lighter duty tool, but there are some other complaints as well.
It has a 13″ cutting swath and works with 0.080″ line with bump feed.
Sale Price: $239

Buying a 1-battery kit and bare tool separately would cost $294 to $297, and so with this deal you appear to save around $55 to $58. I’d say that makes this is a good deal.

Milwaukee has a similar promo at acme tools. You have to add the 9ah line trimmer kit to your cart and then enter the model # of the m18 hedge trimmer, blower or 5ah battery in the promo code field and you get either of those 3 for free. I believe it to be $299 plus shipping
Stuart
The battery model number (48-11-1890) does not work as a coupon code for the trimmer kit.

How doyou guys think these compare to Milwaukee versions. the only reason I’m inclined to go with Milwaukee is that I currently have some of their m18 lights and tools. The only reason I am sort of considering this deal is that 239.00 price. One of my local home depot is running the promo for the milwaukee M18 stringer and blower, 9 amp battery and fast charger for 299.00
Stuart
Talking about just the blower, the Milwaukee version is bigger, louder, more powerful.
I have a test unit I’ll be breaking out soon, but just going by my overall understanding and impressions of both lines, I’d assume the Milwaukee is more powerful. It also has a larger cutting swath – 14-16″ vs. 13″, and can work with thicker line (0.080″ or 0.095″).
If I were to compare apples to apples, I would think Dewalt’s 40V Max tools would be on-par or better than Milwaukee’s.
Their 20V Max tools are more for convenience, while Milwaukee’s are more “designed to meet landscape maintenance professional need,” same as Dewalt’s 40V Max line.
It can be argued that the Milwaukee tools are going to be better. But depending on your needs and wants, the Dewalt bundle might serve you better.
I’m a little hesitant about the Dewalt after reading some of the Amazon user reviews, but the consensus there and elsewhere seems to be that it’s a decent light duty trimmer.
Rafael
Going with the fact that its a little more powerful i would be inclined to go with the Milwaukee especially if I can go with the .095 ” line. `In case anyone is interested here is the M18 link deal. Thanks for your input Stuart.

This includes one batt and the the blower is considered the “bare tool”?
In-store the trimmer w/batt runs $299 itself.
Just double-checking my math. Thanks.

FlexVolt OPE is more powerful than M18; 40v Max has similar power to FlexVolt but far better runtime.
M18 Fuel OPE is likely notably better than 20v Max but by all accounts isn’t ready for prime time if you’re a landscaper.
That said, if you have other M18 tools then red OPE is a no-brainer thanks to battery compatibility. The kits with a bonus 9.0 tossed in are a great deal.

Yeah, have to agree overall. I was a landscaper through college every summer for several years, eventually ‘managing’ a mow crew, if you could call it that (I had merely been the oldest seasonal employee…at 21).
I have the Dewalt 20v Max trimmer and blower with 5.0AH batteries. I have a roughly 1 acre property to worry about, with a full back yard fence. The 20v OPE stuff is perfectly adequate for residential landscape stuff. If I let the grass grow a bit too long, or try to blow around wet leaves, there are noticeable drawbacks to the power…but the runtime has always been impressive. Can usually get the job done from one battery between the trimmer for the lining fence/sidewalks and beds out front, and blowing off the walks/driveway….without needing an immediate charge.
Any notion of commercial work, forget it. The trimmer is great compared to the single line B&D, craftsman, or Ryobi 18v auto-feed things, but with tall grass, weeds, etc. it’ll start to cost a good bit of time. The blower, similar; great for dry or slightly damp grass on pavement, or dry leaves, debris on decks, etc…but any ‘real’ work and the air speed (it has surprisingly good cfm, btw) just doesn’t do it.
Again, though. Both tools get around 20 minutes of wide open work, which isn’t far off the 40v and 60v options runtime wise (with included battery sizes). I can get most trimming work done with the low speed setting relatively quickly, which barely touches the battery. I bought these because the price of the tool w/ big battery netted a decent OPE unit for around 100 dollars. I needed the bigger capacity batteries for other equipment.
It’s obvious though the FV and Milwaukee HD options should be more powerful equipment, and if invested in that platform, go for it. Otherwise, these are great value options for anyone already in the Dewalt 20v line of tools. They’re the least expensive ‘more than toy’ OPE tools, imo.
Matt
I’d go m18 all the way

I returned my 40v DeWalt when I heard about the Milwaukee. I can’t be happier. Yes, they don’t have a chainsaw, but their 40v chainsaw wasnt enough for our needs, though I would still recommend it.
The line that came in the Milwaukee is a lot better than other lines I’ve tried. I cut thick ornamental grasses and it didn’t eat up any line, and nothing got bound around the head like on my gas Echo. So it may be 18v, but I’ll take it over any other unit b/c of battery versatility. 60v FlexVolt tools are too heavy for the little more power they have over Milwaukee fuel counterparts.

The blower can be turned into a great ping pong ball machine gun:

You can go with .095 line with the dewalt 20 volt I use it all the time the dewalt has a higher rpm then milwaukee 6200 rpm vs 5800 rpm when it comes to weed wackers go with the higher speed most of your gas ones go 8000 to 10000 rpm
jtr165
No offense, but tool free speed figures being spun into ‘power’ drives me crazy…
it fits through the eyelits, but I wouldn’t say it’s better. I had some .095″ laying around after the head ran out of what was included on my 20v…and it’s clear that the head speed laughably decreases when it ‘whacks’ stuff, and the temp of the battery probably wasn’t helping efficiency. There is almost no torque behind it. I just mean it’s clearly not designed to spin that much mass, despite it briefly helping with thicker ‘problems’…
to each their own. All i’d suggest is if you have bigger landscaping ‘work’ to do, get something designed to do it. Yeah, you can feed thick line through the head on the 20v Dewalt, but it’s in no way better than a more powerful tool simply because of 400 rpm…The second it touches ‘not air’, it’s pretty obvious.

“And a bonus M18 9.0Ah battery pack will automatically be added to your cart.”
I believe that the deal adds the 5.0Ah battery – but that the 9.0Ah battery and the dual voltage quick charger comes with the blower kit.
Still a good deal.
The same deal can also be had elsewhere – like at ToolUp
fred
I should also have mentioned that there are a batch of other Milwaukee deals available at ToolUp and elsewhere – like a 9.0Ah battery thrown in if you buy 2 select bare tools, or a 9.0Ah batter/charger starter kit thrown in with some purchases. The 5.0Ah batter add-on also goes with some other Milwaukee kits.
Stuart
Sorry, that’s right. I had 9.0Ah batteries on the brain.
Joe
Wow,many Milwaukee guys here…..obviously if your in Milwaukee line up…you can’t go wrong …if your in Dewalt 20v max …stay in it….for personal use either line will serve you well….but they are not pro….(neither is 60v flex)..for cordless…Pro grade is Dewalt 40v or go Ego..which is outstanding !!!..
Adam
Nothing Pro about the 40v line, except the special form factor battery. I can’t comment on the Ego, but the Milwaukee is just as good as the 40v Dewalt, as I have owned both. Dewalt was fine, but so much happier sticking to a battery I can use in all my tools (I was already into Milwaukee tools).
Mike
The Milwaukee isn’t pro it’s a toy, Dewalt much better build quality, 20, 40 and 60 volt all better then milwaukee
Chris Smith
Well thank you Mike for that great explanation!!!
But you really laid it out perfectly!!!
Dewalts: 20v, 40v & 60v
Are “Better” than
Milwaukee’s 18v
3 Battery lines… (4 incl 12v)
Even tho Dewalts 12v is frankly a joke!! & Yellow Lovers keep falling for it!!!
I have an extensive M12 & M18 set of Tools that are used on a Daily Basis and would be Outraged if I had to change Battery Lines to get a higher quality tool!!!
