Dewalt has 4 different 20V Max cordless power tool combo kits for under $200, and I don’t blame anyone for getting confused about which one to buy.
This post assumed that you’re already in the market for a Dewat 20V Max cordless drill and impact driver combo kit – or interested in the discussion – and will focus on the key differences.
In a nutshell, 1 of the 4 combo kits shown above is an older kit that’s priced lower than the others, 1 is an older kit no one should buy unless they’re limited to shopping at Amazon, and the better two kits are available at Home Depot or Lowe’s, depending on the kit, plus online suppliers.

The prices listed below are accurate as of the time of this posting. If somehow you miss it, they all regularly go on sale at similar pricing.
Dewalt DCK240C2 Cordless Combo Kit ($139)

The Dewalt DCK240C2 features an older entry-level cordless drill, and an older main-line cordless impact driver.
The drill came out 10 years ago as a holiday season special buy, and the impact came out 13 years ago with Dewalt’s first wave of 20V Max cordless power tools..
Both tools feature brushed motors. The kit comes with 2x 1.3Ah batteries, a charger, and tool bag.
If you really want a Dewalt combo kit and absolutely cannot budget above $150, I suppose this is your pick.

Dewalt DCK277D2 Cordless Combo Kit ($169)

The DCK277D2 features brushless tools – the DCD777 cordless drill and DCF787 cordless impact driver.
Dewalt upgraded the kit with 2x 2Ah batteries this year.

Some retailers, including Amazon, still haven’t updated their product images, and so they’re still showing the combo kit with 1.3Ah or 1.5Ah batteries.
However, the D2 part of the model number means you get the yellow-top 2Ah batteries as shown in the first image of this combo kit.
The DCD777 drill and DCF787 impact are decent for the money, but they’re not the best Dewalt has to offer for the same money.
Dewalt DCK227D2 Cordless Combo Kit ($169)

This kit features a newer and improved brushless drill, DCD793, and also a newer impact driver that I like better, DCF840.
It comes with 2x 2Ah batteries, a charger, and tool bag.
Of all the impact drivers in these 4 kits, I like the DCF840 the best.
The DCF840 has higher torque and speed specs than the DCF787 featured in the DCK277D2 kit, and the DCD793 delivers more power than the DCD777.
Basically, compared to the DCK277D2 kit, this DCK227D2 kit has better tools.
Dewalt Atomic DCK225D2 Cordless Combo Kit ($169)

The Dewalt Atomic series kit comes with a new model cordless drill, DCD794, and an older impact driver, DCF809. Both tools feature brushless motors.
The kit also comes with 2x 2Ah batteries, a charger, and tool bag.
I should point out that these last two kits come with belt clips. While it’s a minor detail, I feel that leaving something like this out makes a kit feel cheaper rather than a good value.
The Atomic series cordless drill is more compact than the others shown above. The impact driver matches the specs of the DCF840 that’s included in the kit discussed just above.
Which is the Best Combo Kit?
The DCK240C2 kit is the cheapest, and the tools are old. As mentioned, I guess they’re fine if you must have a Dewalt combo kit and cannot budget more than $139.
Personally, I prefer the Atomic series cordless drill, and the form factor of the DCF840 impact driver.
One could always buy the separate tools separately – Dewalt often has the drill-only and impact driver-only kits as $99 specials. But now that the special buy kits come with 1x 2Ah battery instead of 2x 1.3Ah or 1.5Ah batteries, the combo pricing saves you a bit more.
In other words, I’d pick a combo kit at $169 instead of getting the best $99 drill kit and $99 impact driver for a bespoke $198 combo kit.
Here are my sentiments in as concise a manner as possible:
DCK240C2 – old tools, brushed motor, I wouldn’t buy it.
DCK277D2 – brushless tools, but older models, available at Amazon and other sellers.
DCK227D2 – brushless, newer models, nicer impact, available at Lowe’s and other sellers.
DCK225D2 (Atomic) – brushless, more compact drill, available at Home Depot and other sellers.
Which Would I Buy?
For me, it comes down to the DCK225D2 (more compact drill) and DCK227D2 (nicer impact).
DCK240C2 – Would not buy.
DCK277D2 – Would not buy.
DCK227D2 – Second choice.
DCK225D2 (Atomic) – First choice by slim margin.
I typically have better experiences shopping at Home Depot than Lowe’s, which would likely steer me towards the Atomic series combo kit. Independent dealers tend to carry both combo kits.
I’ve used all these tools at some time or another. Even though I say I wouldn’t buy the DCK277D2 kit, it’s not because it’s too far behind the other newer combo kit options, but because it costs the same and offers less value.
Why are There so Many Options?
It seems to me that Amazon is only selling the DCK277D2 combo kit, which still has older tools despite recently being refreshed with 2Ah batteries, because the Atomic kit is exclusive to Home Depot (and independent sellers) and the other better brushless kit is exclusive to Lowe’s (and independent sellers).
Each of the 3 major retail outlets – Amazon, Home Depot, and Lowe’s – seem to have brushless combo kits that none of the others can sell.
DCK240C2 – cheapest combo kit.
DCK277D2 – exclusive to Amazon.
DCK227D2 – exclusive to Lowe’s.
DCK225D2 (Atomic) – exclusive to Home Depot.
That’s not good or bad, but it does make comparisons complicated.

Thank you Stuart.
It’s so hard for the average consumer to make sense of the various combo kits.
This type of concise, clearly explained information, makes your site my go to for tools.

As frustrating as Makita USA’s behavior is with their marketing and product management, I do enjoy how their kits don’t have archaic exclusivity deals with retailers causing them to have a dozen contemporary drills on the same shared 20v battery platform.
As normal, Milwaukee gets it the most right.

One tool I never see anymore, but I have an really like is their Atomic 12v DCF601B. Its a driver but NOT an impact. It barely weighs anything, and its perfect for screws as it never hammers as an Impact would. Used on removing drywall screws, putting in foam boards with washer-fasteners, and just perfect for inside cabinets, and spaces a bigger drill won’t.
Thanks for clearing up the confusing Dewalt product numbers on these “deals”.
Stuart
The 12V Max screwdriver is fantastic, but the price is not very enticing these days. Demand seems low, for cordless screwdrivers in general, but I think that’s also why 12V Xtreme doesn’t get a lot of market visibility anymore.
These combo kits are deals, but they’re more or less different flavors of the same thing.
