Dewalt Duct Tape on the Jobsite

You can now add Dewalt-branded duct tape to your kit.

It’s been out for about a year, and is advertised as being tough enough to “handle the most extreme uses.”

Dewalt Heavy Duty Duct Tape

Dewalt duct tape features heavy-duty woven cloth backing and aggressive adhesive to deliver all-weather performance.

This duct tape can resist UV, moisture, and “a wide range of temperatures.”

Dewalt Heavy Duty Duct Tape Rolls

It measures 1.88″ wide and comes in 30-yard rolls. It looks like this is the only size.

According to the Amazon listing, Dewalt duct tape is made by Intertape Polymer Corp, which was acquired by Clearlake Capital Group in 2022.

At the time of this posting, the tape is $11.78 per roll, and eligible for 15% clickable coupon savings.

Amazon also has a 12-pack for $119 that’s also eligible for added 15% off coupon savings.

The tape itself is gray discrete. Only the wrapper and inner core has Dewalt’s name on it.

If you’ve used this tape before, what do you think, and how did it compare to other tapes?

Based on the UPC (077922992331) – it’s made by Intertape Polymer Group (a Clearlake Capital company)

It also says that in the Amazon specs. I’m assuming this is a licensed product.

IPG doesn’t say so but that’s a good bet:

It’s about as worthless as a Milwaukee hammer.
Is it perfect, no it is not…but it will be embraced by a limited (mentally ,some could say) portion of the population.
Not unlike team big red’s high IQ team.

In this case rising concrete sinks all boats.

We all do! But Chip sounds particularly bilious, and he doesn’t say why. Is he angry at DeWalt? At tape? Why?

I mean if it’s better than gorilla tape I’ll buy some but otherwise I’ll pass.

Now if they made it in DeWalt yellow all the fan boys would be lining up. Lol

IPG makes this and also sells some duct tape under brand names like “Iron Grip” and “Tuck FlexPro” as well as under their own banner

That Iron Grip tape is good stuff. It appears that they have improved the Iron Grip to where it is the same product as the DeWalt tape. Previously it had a bit lower adhesion and less stretch (the stretch is still very minimal on the DeWalt and at 17mil thickness it’s not the best choice for conforming to corners and such). Gorilla is thinner and closer to the usual utility duct tape with adhesive that is similar to the good traditional grey tapes (there are lots of flavors of those, though).

The “previous” Iron Tape proved its worthiness to me and in one application wrapping epdm insulation around a couple inches of oddly exposed frost-free faucet pipe, where it gets about 45% full daily sun, the Iron Tape hasn’t come loose, peeled, or crazed over I think 3-1/2 years now (which is a surprise to me). But it isn’t for everything…it’s quite thick and stiffer. Haven’t had the DeWalt long enough to see how it does over time…slightly harder to tear than the previous Iron Tape but it tears cleanly in both directions and is certainly tackier. If you don’t need the thinner flexibility/conformity of Gorilla, these are worth having around.

Reflecting on this, I don’t think I’ve used duct tape in years; it doesn’t really fit any of my needs anymore. There are a million situational “clever uses” for duct tape, but I never found any of them to be particularly useful.

For wrapping and bundling things, I started using hook & loop strips because they’re almost infinitely reusable and customizable. I still have a few rolls of gaffers tape and hockey tape that I use for things like wrapping tool handles or field-expedient bandages.

Yeah but if you don’t have a vacuum adapter, is there anything better?!

We also use it to temporarily cap the end of riser pipes in water filters / softeners when servicing. My partner likes to say how much he hates duct tape (leaves residue, solution for lazy people, etc) but it saves our butt daily.

Not sure I care about a branded model tho – and by that I mean I really don’t care. Sometimes I’m confused by a company’s desire to be jack of all.

I did try to cheap out on duct tape once though by buying at the dollar store when I needed, and never again.

My personal feelings about dewalt is “dewon’t work long”. I’ve broken multiple 1/2″ extensions, had a failed brad nailer that never got to a 3rd box of nails, and heartily laugh at the butter they make make their driver bits from everytime I see one shred itself into a screw head. I don’t expect any different from this tape and will stick to the black gorilla tape.
