Dewalt Insulated Screwdriver Set

Did you know that Dewalt makes (or contracts out) a set of insulated screwdrivers? Me neither. I knew theta Milwaukee came out with insulated drivers last year, but wasn’t aware of any insulated Dewalt products. Well, now I know better.

Dewalt’s DWHT66417 insulated screwdriver set comes with a full-sized handle, a precision handle, and (8) insulated screwdriver attachments. The screwdriver blades can be swap back and forth, making the kit compact enough to fit into portable tool kits. The multi-bit design is also lighter than a comparable set of full-size insulated screwdrivers.

Dewalt bundles this set with a pouch for easy organization and neater storage.

Screwdriver Selection

  • Slotted 1/8″, 3/16″, 1/4″
  • Phillips #0, #1, #2
  • Robertson (Square) #1, #2

The screwdrivers are certified to 1,000V VDE standards.

Price: $29 to $40

These are simultaneously intriguing and off-putting. Not having to lug around a bunch of handles for screwdrivers that are rarely used would be nice. At the same time, if I am using something insulated, I’m doing something stupid and don’t need the distraction of changing out bits as I am working. Normally the insulation first fails where the shank engages the handle and I think this setup will accelerate the wear and tear in that area, but then again the entire set isn’t much more than what I’m used to paying for one good quality insulated screwdriver and can be cheaply replaced.

If they made a fixed blade version with the precision type handles I would buy it in a second. Those would be fantastic for working in enclosures.

Honestly, probably not. I would have to cut open a lot of different insulated screwdrivers for such examination to be of any use.

Felo has made a few interchange multiblade insulated driver sets for some time. This dewalt set is a mimic of Felo’s current offerings, imo. The Felo set is german made, includes a hard case and a push button blade lock in the handle with a removable spinner cap and cost about $20 more. You also get 12 blade inserts that double as precision drivers and, imo, a far superior handle design. Seems like the dewalt marketeers were “inspired” by Felo’s concept with a Klein-esque handle.

What sells me on these screw drivers is the pouch. These will be rarely used, like one commenter said “when I’m doing something stupid” lol perfect statement to justify the use of these and why they would be rarely used. More of an item I will keep in the truck tool box just in case I need to mess with a piece of equipment that is hot.

It is my understanding that these tools, and other insulated tools like them, are NOT intended for use on live equipment. They offer protection in case of accidental contact with a hot connection, or when used near – but not on – live equipment.
