Dewalt DCK940D2 20V Max Cordless Combo Kit

Over at Home Depot, today Deal of the Day features a Dewalt 20V Max 9pc cordless combo kit, and a Milwaukee M18 9pc cordless combo kit.

Read More About This Dewalt Deal From Last Year

The kit comes with:

  • DCD771 Drill/Driver (Compare Price)
  • DCF885 Impact Driver (Compare Price)
  • DCS381 Reciprocating Saw
  • DCS393 Circular Saw
  • DCS355 Brushless Oscillating Multi-Tool (Compare Price)
  • DCL040 LED Worklight (Compare Price)
  • DCG412 Angle Grinder (Compare Price)
  • DCR006 Bluetooth Speaker (Compare Price)
  • DCD740 Right Angle Drill (Compare Price)
  • 2x 2.0Ah Li-ion Battery Packs
  • Standard Charger
  • Tool Bags

The gotchas? The drill is Dewalt’s holiday special, and the 2 saws are the regular non-premium combo versions.

Last year I said I thought this was a fantastic deal at $499, and the sentiment remains. This is a great deal even if you don’t need everything the kit offers.

Milwaukee 2695-29 M18 9-Tool Cordless Combo Kit

This Milwaukee M18 combo kit was $599 last year. It’s on sale for $499 this year, likely to compete evenly with the Dewalt kit.

You get a nice selection of tools. As with the Dewalt kit, this is a great bargain even if you can’t immediately use every tool in the kit.

Which Should You Buy?

Oh, and the deal ends at 4am ET 12/2/2016.

So… the Dewalt kit comes with a brushless oscillating multi-tool. (Milwaukee’s has a brushed motor, but is still quite good – read more here.) The Milwaukee kit has an impact wrench. The Dewalt kit has a Bluetooth speaker, the Milwaukee kit an air blower. With Dewalt’s you get a cut-off tool/angle grinder. But is it the one you want?

The Dewalt kit comes with 2.0Ah compact Li-ion battery packs, the Milwaukee kit comes with XC 3.0Ah battery packs.

Which tools do you need most?

Which platform do you want to buy into?

Which kit would you have to spend more to make complete to your liking?

I wish I could tell you which I’d buy right now, but it’s not an easy choice. The easy way to decide is to look at the savings. Given that the Milwaukee was $599 last year, and Home Depot has both the Dewalt and Milwaukee sets on sale for $499 today, I think the Milwaukee is the better “deal,” although both are quite good. Based on that alone, I might lean more closely towards the Milwaukee.

Thanks for adding that! I’d rather buy them one at a time as the better models. It’s a great price no doubt.

I bought a Makita kit like that and the only tool that’s failed me so far was the smaller 18v impact wrench. The large 18v one (came in the kit) still runs fine its just super heavy and awkward for most jobs I need it for, since I’m not using it for automotive.

Home depot also has the deal of the day Milwaukee 18v brushless 16ga angle nailer kit with battery/charger for $259. Considering the bare tool is $349, this is steal. http://m.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M18-FUEL-18-Volt-16-Gauge-Angled-Finish-Nailer-Kit-2742-21CT/206862848

Thanks for that. It has been that price for over a week, but rarely in stock. Though for as much as I would use it, I may just get the ryobi

I think the Ryobi has a 15ga angular nailer that sells fro $200 – bare tool.
Can’t say if it is any good – but 15ga has a bit more holding power.
HD was selling the Ryobi 18ga for $99 – on Black Friday – may still be available at that price.

I just watched a comparison of a Ryobi an Milwaukee nailer. I’m buying the Ryobi. The Milwaukee consistently went into protection after several fires in bump mode, where the Ryobi went until the battery died. I don’t think either had mifires, and maybe a couple didn’t sink. But for the $$, the reviever & now me are going with the Ryobi

I agree with Ryobi, I have all Bosch 18v and Milwaukee 12v stuff, but when I got some of those Ryobi narrow crown staplers on clearance for 35 bucks. I was impressed, ended up buy the 18 gauge nailer on black Friday. Heck they go for used on eBay for 80 dollars. Just have one battery and charger for now, going to get more batteries when I get a chance.

Are you a professional who lays down 100’s of feet of base or throws up several sheets of paneling in a short time? If not you’re never going to see the Milwaukee go into protection. Watch the Concord Carpenter’s video for a less biased view: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XIUEzqhHtA

I was initially concerned about the shutdown, but I have never been able to cause it to go into shutdown on an actual project even when I’ve tried.

The Milwaukee nailers do have a problem with double hits though, but frankly I didn’t really even notice this until Toolaholic talked to me about it.

The bigger problem I had was in some angled nailing situation with the 18 ga. It either wouldn’t fire because the foot wouldn’t actuate or leave brads proud of the surface. Again I found it to be more prominent in testing than in actual project use.

The Milwaukee can keep up with a real-world pace.

Is this a good tool for installing quarter round on newly installed hardwood? I dont currently have any Milwaukee tools, so that would mean another battery (included). 16g finishing nailers seem to be a waste if you already have a 18g brad nailer. I have neither.

I’m heavy into dewalt, and I’d still lean to the Milwaukee of these 2. The right angle drill is niche at best, very unremarkable, yea the oscillating tool is phenomenal, but above all the slim packs break that deal. If you’re buying in and plan on using anything in that kit other than the compact drill, impact, and oscillating tool, you’re gonna be SOL on batteries real fast. I own the model up of both saws and the grinder, and they’ll all suck a 4ah dry in under an hour with moderate to heavy use.

I kind of agree with the poor Dewalt battery selection. Those compact packs are great for the drill and driver and even the OMT but for the saws and the grinder not so much. They will be under powered slightly and the high current demand will wear out the small batteries quick.

They really should have included one 2 amp compact battery and one 5 amp battery.

Agreed, I’m a Yellow guy too but I couldn’t recommend this kit, unless the buyer would be willing to spend another $150 on more batteries.

I routinely run through 3-4 4ah packs 5-6 days a week on my cir saw and while yes the 2ah packs work OK (run time aside) there is a real and noticeable difference in cutting power.

I purchased the dewalt kit last year at the 499 price over the Milwaukee because I have no use for a impact wrench and I don’t really like those small blowers (no matter what brand) and I find more use for the radio and the grinder…I was actually disappointed in the drill….It works great but looks like a toy…I’ve upgraded the drill already with the DcD777.. the DcD777 came with two 1.5 Batt’s and a charger…so I now have 4batts and two chargers…small Batts but two are charging while two in use…and sold the drill that came with the kit (dcd771) tool only for 45 on Craigslist so I’m happy…
