Dremel MM30 Oscillating Tool

Dremel is soon coming out with a new Multi-Max oscillating multi-tool, the MM30, that offers power and convenience, and is priced at just under $100.

Two years ago – to the day – I briefly discussed Dremel’s then-new MM20 Multi-Max oscillating multi-tool very briefly within a post about the MM40. A few months before that, there was a short paragraph about the MM20 within a sneak peek post that also more heavily focused on the MM40.

The MM20 was a budget-friendly oscillating tool that lacked the power and tool-free blade change mechanism of the MM40. The MM30 is an improvement upon the MM20, but has a number of new and clever features that really caught my attention.

Quick-Release on-Tool Blade Change Wrench

The MM30 does not have a tool-free blade change mechanism, but instead features a folding socket wrench that clicks into the top of the tool.

To me, this means two things: 1) quicker blade changes, and 2) reduced chance of losing the wrench.

Plus, it looks like the clamping screw is one piece, which means no separate bolt and clamping washer to keep track of.

Quick Hold Magnetic Accessory Interface

A magnet is built into the blade holder, and securely holds onto steel blades and accessories while the clamping screw is tightened into place.

This feature probably increase the height of the tool a little bit, but seems like a clever way to speed up the blade change process.

Wide Variable Speed Range

Dremel boasts that the MM30 has the widest speed range of any oscillating tool – 10,000 – 23,000 OPM.

I have never found the speed ranges of modern oscillating tools to be lacking, and am not sure as to whether an additional 1,000 OPM translates to higher performance and quicker work or not.

First Impression

This new oscillating tool is a great example of why I am so fond incredibly fond of Dremel as a company. They continue to bring innovations to the market, even with their non-flagship tools.

The MM30 is not the most powerful oscillating tool on the market, nor does it feature a tool-free blade change mechanism. But it is quite powerful, and seems extremely user-friendly.

This is one oscillating tool that I would definitely consider for my own needs if not for the Fein oscillating tool I purchased two years ago.

Dremel’s MM20 has dropped in price ($79 via Amazon), but the MM30 offers enough upgrades and enhancements to be considered a worthwhile upgrade. If you’re eager for a Dremel tool with tool-free blade change, you’ll have to step up to the MM40 ($125 via Amazon) or the more powerful MM45 ($129 via Home Depot).
