FastCap has come out the SawHood Pro, an update to their original SawHood miter saw dust shield and containment accessory. The new SawHood is said to take all the features of the SawHood to the next level, and in fact looks to do this by eliminating corners and other areas where dust could catch and accumulate.
I bought an original SawHood about 3-4 years ago (I don’t recall when I ordered it, but posted about its detailed retail packaging in June of 2011), but I have been using it less and less. Even when I use a dust extractor, the SawHood helps to contain debris that gets thrown outside the reach of the vacuum port. While the SawHood still does a great job, and it looks like recent models are even better – FastCap has been shipping recent SawHoods with an added front flap to help with dust containment – but it’s not worth setting up for quick cuts here and there.

The new SawHood Pro looks like it could be simpler to set up, at least that’s what I’m hoping. It would still be a decent upgrade even if the only advantage is the elimination of corners where dust and chips can pool up.
I wish the SawHood Pro was priced at the same level of the SawHood, which can be found for $120-150, but if the new Pro version has sewn-in supports as the product image shows, it will probably be a LOT more user-friendly in terms of setting up, cleaning up, and closing up.
The SawHood Pro should be compatible with most popular miter saws.

I find the seams to be more of a problem than corners, this looks to have seams for the hoops and looks like it’s a cramped space to sweep or vacuum out.

Fastcap seems to me to be one of those companies that keeps trying to innovate new products. While I’ve not been overly impressed with some of those I’ve tried – I keep coming back from time to time to try others. The recent new product list includes something they call “zero clearance tape” – that I might give a try if and when I can find it at my local supplier.

It’s seems like getting the residual dust out should be nothing more than a matter of turning it inside out and shaking. (note: best to do this outside)

I have used this dust hood for over a year now its hands down easier to put away at the end of the day than the old one. and in 90% of the houses i work in I don’t worry about dust control as it catches so much more than the vacuum did. its very durable and well thought out with interior baffles to stop dust blow back. 2 shakes is all it takes to get the majority of the dust into the garbage. it also only takes a few seconds to setup and tear down worth all the time spent not cleaning up a mess at the end of a work day
