In response to yesterday’s post on the new AmazonBasics parts organizers, reader IUEC medic pointed out that Home Depot offers something a very similar organizer under their HDX branding.
The “adjustable parts organizer” with adjustable partitions is identical to organizers sold at Home Depot under the “HDX” branding. The only apparent difference is the latches and dividers of the hdx are orange. It’s almost certainly the same manufacturer. They’re always sold in a pack of 2 for around $10.

I have several, and while they’re not the highest quality organizer, they’re certainly worth the price paid and serve their intended purpose well.
Taking a closer look, it does look to be the same exact product.
Amazon’s is priced at $18. The HDX is $12, and that’s for TWO.
User reviews seem to be extremely positive. I’m curious about the unique divider system, which I hadn’t seen before. Usually, you have long dividers, and short dividers. This system allows for a little more customization, where you can create more complex compartment shapes, other than squares and rectangles.
Price: $12 for 2-pack

I too am a fan on the HDX parts organizers. I bought 4 for various items that were collected across multiple containers to simplify/standardize storage of connectors, hangars and related items. These are somewhat customizable and work/stack well. I went back and bought two larger units and arranged them as tool boxes for upstairs and downstairs ( we live in 3 story townhome now) to save on running up and downstairs each time we need to fix and do something with simple tools/connectors.

These actually are long and short dividers. The ones running from top to bottom are a single piece, with a slot on either side for the short dividers. I have approximately 20 of these and a purpose-built shelf to fit another 10 or so when the need arises: they work super well for the price. Some of them are coming up on ~15lbs of screws and don’t show any signs of giving up.
Stuart
Technically, yes.
But long dividers usually span the length of an organizer, and short dividers span the width between 2 long dividers.

For smaller organizers, I like the Plano brand. At Menards they are reasonably priced. No handles on the ones I get but they have some adjustable compartments and you can get very slim ones for storing things like router bits, easy to see and doesn’t take up a lot of space. I had terrible luck with the Harbor Freight small, slim clear organizers. The latches didn’t latch much of the time. Not much of a price difference between those and the Planos on sale (frequently at Menards).

I have a lot of Plano 3700 series tackle boxes that I use for keeping my electronics (connectors, pins, ferrules, Grove stuff, etc). For sensitive electronics, I spray with anti-static spray first.
I’ve seen 3rd part boxes at Walmart and Dick’s with the same profile – I like stacking them up. I bought a couple of the Walmart boxes; they’re not as good as Plano, but about 1/2 the price.

For really small parts (such as Molex Mini-Fit pins and sockets), I glue the dividers down so they don’t come up accidentally when my fat fingers are fishing for a part.
The removable bin style containers are way too big for these parts.
I’m definitely going to take a look at these HDX containers.

I bought a set of the HDX organisers a couple of years ago for all the miscellaneous screws, nails, and staples I had laying around. In addition to the two packs you see at HD all the time, around Christmastide you will see these in five ans six packs. They come with either one larger(but smaller than the ones shown here) and four half size(depth identical to the larger one) boxes or one larger, two half size, and one the same area asmthe half size but deep as any two of the others stacked. My wife glommed onto a ssmaller one to keep fishing tackle in.
Impressions. Price is great. 9.99 every year I have seen them. They are certainly not DeWalt/Milwaukee/Sortimo quality by a long mile but for use where you are not going to move them around a lot and keep them on premises, they are very good. Pros. Plastic latches that hinge down over a lip on the body. Cons. Plastic latches period.
At this price you take what you get but I vastly prefer a hinged type latch to the ones moulded directly into the lids likema tab. I never trust them to not open and after a few cycles they always loosen significantly. Overall in their price rwnge the HDX models are hard to beat.

It seems to be the norm that normal bricks and mortals store have better pricing than amazon on a lot of items. Amazon price are only ok and in a lot of case higher than else where.
Troy
I agree. Amazon pricing hardly ever impresses me on anything. You would think a house brand item that doesn’t have the brick and mortar overhead would garner a significantly better price. Like Stuart said, I’m not incentivized to even try it.

Amazon has to build in the cost of “free prime shipping”

Hdx organizer works well for my grandkids matchbox collection, other then that, not very good

What are the dimensions of the organizers?
Stuart
According to Home Depot, 14.76″ long x 11.42″ wide x 2.64″ tall.

As best I can tell – the box you linked to is sourced from 上海美瑞实业有限公司
Aka Meridian International Co. Ltd – Shanghai China

Also guys, you should look again at the Amazon versions. Only the last one with the adjustable dividers is like the HDX from HD. The others have removable bins and as a far as I know, none of the HDX versions do. Could be wrong about that but none of mine do.

Oops, sorry. That was already noted in the blog.

Here’s a link to an Amazon listing for a ‘Tactix’ branded version of the ones I saw at HD last season. Even the same colours.

… makes it interesting HD only sells that model and the two sided one. Not the shallow and deep removable bin ones.
Stuart
Limited shelf space?

I avoid organisers that have adjustable compartments like the plague. They are terrible, especially with things like washers. I have not found one where the dividers wont shift under some circumstances.

These HDX boxes are smaller than the Amazon ones you linked yesterday. That should be obvious. Not really an exact comparison. Both length and width are about 2″ less than the AmazonBasics organizers.

Ironically, I was looking for an inexpensive parts carrier to make a “go to school” tool kit similar to the one you wrote about.
I found these at Home Depot – 2 for a few bucks – used one for the colleg-bound kit and the other will find use at home.

I love these. They are plenty durable for my uses and you can get them for a great price. They are especially good for small tool and fastener kits sorted by specific purpose, because you can make bigger spaces for the tools. I have one as an electrical work toolbox with the NCV, DMM, wire nuts, etc in it. You can cut out some of the permanent black walls to get different shaped or sized bins, without losing too much sturdiness.
None of the plastic is so brittle it shatters on impact, which isn’t always the case for these kinds of organizers.
I haven’t had much trouble with migrating parts but i don’t have a lot of small washers as an acid test.
You’ve got almost nothing to lose buying a pack on the typical holiday sales. The double-sided ones are smaller but i prefer the stacking ones.

Mr. McGuire: “I want to say one word to you. Just one word.”
Benjamin Braddock: “Yes, sir.”
Mr. McGuire: “Are you listening?”
Benjamin Braddock: “Yes, I am.”
Mr. McGuire: “Plano fishing boxes.”
Oh, rats, that was three….
