James wrote in with a tip about today’s Home Depot “Deal of the Day” special buys. The Crescent Switchblade multi-cutter tool is one of the sale items, but there are other notable deals, such as a Wiss multi-purpose cutter set, Crescent long-reach Double-X pliers, and a couple of Lufkin tape measures. There are also a couple of Husky hand tools and mechanics tools included in the lineup.
James noticed that it looks like Home Depot is offering free shipping on these tool deals without the usual $45 minimum order amount, and I’m seeing the same thing. That makes some of these deals ever harder to resist!

These deals end at 4am ET on 11/8/14, unless supplies run out sooner.

There are a couple of pages of deals there, so be sure to use the slider to see them all.
Thanks James for the tip!

What do you get for the man who has nothing???… The Crescent Switchblade multi-cutter tool. Four gifts in one. Only at Dome Hepo.

Gimmicky tool for Christmas. They are coming out of the woodwork, lately.
Stuart
Some of them, like the compound long-reach pliers, are more useful than gimmicky. Wiss metal snips are a standard in sheet metal work.

I bought the Crecent Switch Blade. I think that might end up getting returned. I just think I will end up losing the additional pieces eventually. I also have the tools as single use tools too. The gimmick got me for a minute good thing you can return things after you buy them.

Is this something new Home Depot is doing? I’ve not seen it before.
Stuart
No, but I rarely check anymore. They don’t often have noteworthy tool deals.

So basically you get four nice tools and have to exchange the cheap plastic bits between jobs. In what universe does that make sense?
jesse
These seem like an OK idea if they are not going to be used much, but in a situation where you have to go back and forth between heads they quickly lose their appeal. At that point they become almost useless.

I have seen tools like that before, what is the purpose to the switchable heads?

Maybe some of the other HD deals were better, but looking at this Crescent Switchblade pliers – I have to agree with the majority vote that it is more gimmick then anything else. It doesn’t seem to offer enough in the way of reduced storage space or lower cost to be worth the inconvenience of having to change ends – or to mitigate the potential of losing parts. Switching blades might be a decent idea for other tools – and I recently saw a trowel set (1 handle and several blades) that might be worth a look for those short on storage space:

Not that I would ever buy it but I don’t think it look very gimmicky. I do think they can improve it though, instead of one handle and four attachment. I think having two handle with two popular attachment (such as the included pliers) would serve most people better.

I just got Crescent switchblade in and It sucks, It feels cheap and the method to swap things out is not intuitive at all. That this is going back to Home Depot as soon as I get over the cold
