Husky “Double Speed” Adjustable Wrench Review

Husky has come out with a new Double Speed adjustable wrench design that they claim adjusts 2x faster than standard adjustable wrenches. Two times faster? I had to test one out.

Like Husky’s self-adjusting groove joint pliers and 3X ratcheting screwdriver, their Double Speed wrench is a new take on a common tool design. The model I tested is the 10-inch size, which is priced at $11 via Home Depot.

Double Speed?

Quick test: grab a standard 10-inch adjustable wrench and count how many flicks of the thumbwheel it takes to fully open and close it.

My 10-inch Irega wrench with 1-1/4″ capacity takes about 14 spins to open and 15 to close, plus or minus a spin. Husky’s new 10-inch adjustable wrench has a 1-3/8″ capacity and takes 7 spins to open and 8 to close. So yes, it does adjust twice as fast.

Husky’s new adjustable wrenches really do open, close, and adjust quicker than standard adjustable wrenches. This feature makes Husky’s wrenches especially handy when working with a range of fastener sizes.

How Does it Work?

Husky’s design makes use of a steeper helix angle on the knurl, such that one spin of the knurl translates to greater linear motion of the jaw.

So why haven’t other manufacturers done this? Without extensive modeling and analysis, I  can only theorize that such a design leads to shallower and weaker engagement between the knurl and jaw. This idea is supported by the extended length of the knurl.

A standard-design adjustable wrench knurl typically has three threads, with some premium models sporting a fourth thread for added strength. Thus, Husky might have added a fourth knurl thread in their wrench design to compensate for any weakening caused by the steeper helix angle.

Pros:

• steeper helix angle = speedier adjustment

• extra-wide capacity compared to competing models

Cons:

• *possibly* weaker than traditional-style wrenches
• adjustment is not as precise as higher-end designs

Summary

I tested the 10-inch model, which was comfortable to use and it lived up to Husky’s Double Speed marketing claims. In theory the design might make the adjustable wrench weaker than standard adjustable wrenches, but in practice these types of wrenches should not be used in high-torque applications anyways.

I definitely like Husky’s adjustable wrenches better than those by Kobalt, Crescent, and Stanley. It is a little sloppier than higher-end models, but this is reflected by the price. My favorite 8-inch adjustable wrench set me back $25. Husky’s 3-piece set comes with 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch wrenches for $5 less.
