Leatherman Rebar Multi-Tool

Leatherman has teased us with photos of the new Rebar multi-tool for some time, but it looks like concrete specs and details are now available. The Rebar closely resembles the heavy duty Leatherman Super Tool 300 but is a bit smaller and closer to the Wave and Charge multi-tools in size.

The new Leatherman Rebar multi-tool features:

  • stainless steel body or stainless with black oxide coating
  • full-size combination pliers (needlenose + regular)
  • electrical crimper
  • removable and replaceable 154CM stainless steel soft and hard-wire cutter
  • tool locking system
  • 420HC straight edge knife blade
  • 420HC serrated knfie blade
  • bottle and can opener with v-notch wire stripper
  • full-size Phillips screwdriver
  • medium and large slotted screwdrivers
  • wood-cutting saw
  • wood and metal file
  • awl with thread loop

Blade length is 2.75″, and the multi-tool closes to 4″ in length. Total weight is 6.7 oz.

Leatherman Rebar Release Date:

The Rebar will be available starting in mid-April 2012. An MSRP has not been announced yet, but we imagine the Rebar will be priced lower than its big-brother Super Tool 300, which sells at $55.

In spite of the fact that the current Super Tool addresses the few shortcomings of the original, it’s still a large and somewhat heavy tool. That doesn’t sink in with some people, until they’ve carried one for a day at the job site, etc. It’s one thing to check them out in the store. It’s quite different to lug one all day.

While this tool is a little smaller, the big news is it’s lighter weight. Just 2 or 3 ounces can mean the difference between a lot of tool, and something that could actually function as an every day carry. It may not seem like a lot, but it makes a huge difference over the course of a day.

This tool is large enough to have “real” pliers, knives, etc, that are capable of real jobs when required. On the other hand, I would welcome the smaller frame and particularly the lighter weight. If it’s built to the same standard as the current Super Tool, it looks like a no brainer.

If anyone is interested, these are currently available through limited retailers. I just purchased one through http://www.swissknifeshop.com It wasn’t my first purchase from them.

I highly recommend the seller. They charge no tax or shipping. The price you see, $49.95, is exactly what you’ll end up paying for everything.

It’s a rocking little tool with a great size and weight. It’s like having most of the advantages of the Super Tool, in a size you wouldn’t mind lugging as an every day item.

This is a great and credible retailer and tool.
