Deal of the Day: Little Giant Ladders (12/6/15)

Little Giant Ladder

Over at Amazon, Little Giant ladders are on sale as part of today’s Deal of the Day (12/6/2015). The added discounts expire at 3am 12/7, unless supplies run out sooner.

Model 13 is on sale for $129 (which is less than its deal price last year), Model 17 is on sale for $178, and Model 22 is on sale for $197. Amazon says these discounts are up to 50% off the full price.

A quick check shows that these ladders are hugely discounted. This deal only came around once last year, and might only come around this one time for the 2015 holiday shopping season.

These ladders are very versatile and can be used in different configurations, such as A-frame and full extension modes. I remember seeing infomercials for these ladders, but don’t let that dissuade you. I’ve never used a Little Giant ladder, but they seem to have a strong following and very good reputation.

This post was first published for last year’s Deal of the Day on 12/7/2014, and republished when the deal returned on 12/6/2015.

2014 Deal Prices: Model 13 for $139, Model 17 for $169, Model 22 for $198.
2015 Deal Prices: Model 13 for $129, Model 17 for $178, Model 22 for $197.

I’m a gc and I purchased the little giant ladder over 20 years ago and it’s one of the best ladders of its kind . We use it on almost every job were on because of its ability to work on stairs and up close against walls and that u can bring it in a house and then open it up in the space . I saw that they came out with a new model that let’s u extend the left or right leg for uneven surfaces another great design by them .

I have a Little Giant 3-leg step ladder (11580 – no longer made) that I like quite a bit for special tasks. The build-quality is quite good – but the ladder is on the heavy side and a bit stiff to operate – so except when needed I prefer a more conventional fiberglass ladder (my step ladders and extension ladders are Keller’s and Werner’s). Nonetheless, if I were to buy a new aluminum ladder – one of these Little Giants would be it based on versatility.
BTW – Harbor Freight has a coupon that puts their 17 foot knock-off at $120 on sale today.

I feel the same way about the weight. Mine doesn’t see much use.

My work has a different brands version of these ladders. They really are great ladders. Its a “one ladder fits all needs” kinda deal.

Anyone questioning getting one of these should go ahead and buy it. You won’t be let down

These multi-configuration ladders are fantastic. Although they are somewhat heavy, they do not take up the amount of space that a conventional ladder would. I own a Werner multiladder and it has been very useful.

I have one of their 17 foot ladders, and love it. Yes, it is a bit on the heavy side, but how many other types of ladders can be anything fom a 9 to 17 foot ladder, a 4 to 8 foot stepladder, and still fit in the trunk of the average car? OK, large car, but it will fit in the trunk of a fairly small car, provided part of the rear seat folds down to expand the trunk area. However, where they really shine, is on remodeling tasks for houses, especially oneswith stairs. You can extend one half of the ladder more than the other, and have a safe ladder in the stairway itself, and for hanging cove molding, or anything else next to the wall in a room with a high ceiling, you can have the legs on one side a little longer than the other, so you can work right next to the wall, without the ladder touching it. There are other ladders better at specific tasks, but if you only want to own one ladder, the LG style is the one to get. Also, my Little Giant was USA made.

Ps if you spend a long time on a ladder, spring for the little platform. You attach it to the rungs on your way up where it sits folded out of the way as you climb up pst it. You then hook your toe on the edge of the platform, and lift until it clicks, and you have a nice level place to stand. I don’t know about the rest of you, but as I am aging, I can only spend so much time on a ladder rung before my feet start to feel it.

I switched to steel shank/steel toe boots from steel toe only ones for that very reason. The steel shank along the sole distributes the pressure and makes you feel like you’re standing on flat ground. I spent a lot of time climbing permanently installed ladders and their narrow rungs were killing my feet.

How are the rather narrow looking rungs? I always worried they were so narrow, it would get uncomfortable on the feet, as compared to the wide aluminum rungs of “normal” ladders. I’m not in the market for one, especially after falling off a ladder a few years ago(!), but it was something I wondered about these rather nifty ladders.

The rungs are kind of narrow, but their fold-away platform is wonderful.

I sold mine because the narrow steps hurt my feet. It is ok to step up and down but if you have to stand on the ladder for long periods of time, they need to include special shoes with it. (I used it for painting)

Only ever see those ladders with the DIY crowd. Don’t really see them on work trucks.

Yep, you don’t see them on them, because they are in them. While folded up, it makes a ton more sense to put IN the truck rather than on the truck. Saves time and safer.

We have 2 ladders, and the first one used is the LG, so you wouldn’t see the LG when I go to lunch

It never came up on sale. At least not on my computer, though it’s listed in lightening deals.

        I don’t know what’s going on. I thought I understood how these deals worked, I guess I don’t.

The Tekton torque wrench is next, then the next one is the stepladder and it says it “Starts for Prime members at 9:40 AM” I assumed it was Pacific time when I posted the comment, does this mean we’ll see it Tuesday then? Why don’t they say that?

      That’s a Monday Lightning Deal.

Amazon publishes many of their lightning deals 22 hours ahead of time. It might be 2pm and I’ll see a deal for 12pm ET the next day. Maybe it’s 24 hours?

I see that deal as starting at 10:40am ET Monday.

I am a contractor and prefer my extension ladders but use these telescopic style ladders because they are easier to transport for smaller jobs. Little Giant ladders are good quality but expensive, so this Amazon sale makes them reasonably priced. They are also heavy but all type 1A ladders are hefty.
I just bought a couple of Werner 22′ telescopic ladders (model MT1-22) from Home Depot for $119 each. They are type 1 rated for 250#, I like this ladder because it is easier to carry since it is only 38 lbs. It flexes a bit more but if you’re used to climbing extension ladders it won’t bother you.

What makes the Little Giant so handy is you can slide the two extensions off, then use the U pin to join the two extension halves together. Now you have two A frames for a cross plank.
I used my 22 when pounding in 10 ft and 12 ft tall heavy duty U posts like they use for road signs. We were putting up a deer fence on some steep terrain. Often the uphill side would be collapsed and the down hill side at near full extension. I also used the adjustable leg, and the work platform to stand on.
There is a photo in the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting showing a Little Giant split into 2 A ladders for crossing a decorative iron fence – the main ladder for folks, the 2nd A for getting hoses over the fence.
Remember the Little Giant is Type 1A, 300 lb.
Many of the ladders you see advertised are only 250 lb ladders!
Little Giant even has 1AA Super Duty 375 lb ladders.
    I am getting a 13 Velocity so I have a lighter, shorter ladder when I don’t need the extra height of the 22 Classic – 25 lb, 3′ 1″ 13 vs 45 lb, 5′ 4″ 22.

If you have a menards near you the Werner 22ft version goes on sale every few months for $120. I’ve never seen that price anywhere except HD Black Friday this year

I’m borrowing a Little Giant ladder, and it is pretty well constructed and very easy to fold/unfold extend/retract – although I think this is a slightly older model since the locking mechanisms look different than the above image – spring-loaded U-shaped pocking pins, which I like a lot.

I’m not so sure it’s a great deal at ~$180, but it for sure is way stronger and better constructed with much thicker aluminum than the $120-150 Werner version at the big box stores. Yes, that makes it several pounds heavier, but it’s worth it for the strength – this thing can be fully extended and you can walk/crawl across it’s entire length laid flat between two supports. I’m pretty sure the cheaper and lighter versions would bend and fold in half, after a few times if not the first.

I’d say worth the dough if it fits your use and you want a compact ladder that can still get up to the roof and eaves of a single story building and hold a 200-300lb person with ease.
