Lowes has announced one more of their Black Friday 2014 deals – a 12-gallon Shop-Vac wet/dry vacuum.
As an aside, has anyone else noticed that all of the Shop-Vacs at Lowes now have a different color scheme? Goodbye blue and grey, hello black, red, and silver.

For another year in a row, it looks like Lowes is offering a fully-featured Shop-Vac vacuum for the holidays, and not one that has been dialed down to achieve a low price point.
The vacuum comes with a couple of accessories – 3 extension wands, a crevice nozzle, narrow and wide floor and surface nozzles, a cartridge filter, and a disposable collection bag. This is going by the product image.
The Black Friday 2014 sale price will be $40.
Looks like a decent and competitive Shop-Vac model.

The deal might be available online, or it could be an in-store doorbuster. Lowes says the deal will kick off on 11/27 and last through 12/3, unless supplies run out sooner, which typically happens every year.

Lowes has not identified this particular model as the Black Friday sale item, but it matches the look of the vacuum in the announcement video, as well as the “before” price, and an inventory check shows that my local stores each have between 20 and 32 of these vacuums in stock.

Just to rant for a minute… It’s cute that they say 6HP peak as if it is a big and tough power tool, but seriously if it ever hit 6HP for long enough to spin a full turn it would pop any 110v circuit breaker. My math says it would draw over 40 amps at 100% efficiency and this website is in the same ballpark.
The reason I care is that if I am using the vac as a dust collector for my table saw or orbital sander, then I don’t want the combined power to trip the breaker frequently, which it does with my current shop vac. My garage circuit breaker is behind a locked door and very annoying to get a key. So for a 1-1/4 shop vac, I want it to move some air but not spike the current.

The “peak” legalese word also caught my eye immediately. 6 is a big number for horsepower for an electric motor on anything, and will be happy to tear a tool out of your hands if you’re not careful. My money says this makes 6 hp for a fraction of a second when fed 1000 volts at 50,000 rpm while being supercooled, right before it disintegrates. But that’s Chinese truth in advertising.
I’m confident that this is another big box store’s leveraging of buying power to demand cut-rate models from well-known and respected brands, nobody makes money on a $100 tool for $40. I figure the actual msrp should be somewhere between $25-50. If it’s $50, I’d buy it, because I actually need a cheap shop vac right now, but if it’s a $25 shop vac, I’d be insulted to think someone would bring it to market. I wouldn’t be *surprised*, though.

I was mildly enthusiastic when I saw the teaser video, but the revealed specs make me hesitate. A lot.
Most notable discrepancy: that must be a 2″ hose in the teaser video, but the photo accompanying the written specs are for a 1.25″ hose, which is usually my cue to walk away from a shop vacuum. I know that’s not the only measure of a vac, but it’s become my ‘dealbreaker’ criteria.
