Megapro Original Screwdriver

I checked my email inbox this morning and saw that I received a message from Megapro. I didn’t open it yet – the words “Father’s Day!!” flashed into my mind and I came straight here.

If you’re shopping for someone, get them a Megapro screwdriver. If you want to treat yourself, get yourself a Megapro screwdriver. If when you’re reading this Father’s Day is long past and the next one still months ahead, buy a Megapro screwdriver.

Megapro screwdrivers are made in the USA or Canada, depending on the model, and they’re large, convenient, and well-made.

I’ve purchased a few over the years, and Megapro sent over a couple of samples a while back as well.

Megapro Ratcheting Screwdrivers

I can highly recommend anything Megapro makes, but their ratcheting screwdrivers are especially good. (I continue to use my Megapro-made Channellock driver to this day.)

Megapro makes two basic styles of ratcheting screwdriver – one that works with double-ended bits with ball detent retention, and one that works with standard 1″ insert bits.

In theory, I prefer the screwdriver that works with 1″ bits, but in practice I still haven’t felt compelled enough to upgrade. Should I lose or damage any of the double-ended bits, replacements are widely available.

Megapro screwdrivers have large handles. which are perfect for delivery high torque. The ratcheting screwdrivers have a more slender and tapered shape.

These are good screwdrivers for general purpose or specialized tasks, but not really anything where you need a smaller tool or more precise feel.

If you’re on the fence, take a peek at the user reviews, which tend to be 5-stars across the board.

Here’s my short video of the Channellock from nearly 10 years ago.

The thing about Megapro is that they’re not a one-tool-fits-all type of company. Some drivers are aimed at HVAC professionals, others at automotive users, and they even have one for elevator technicians.

There are a couple of special editions as well.

Megapro Impact Bits

“But I only use power tools these days.” They also have impact-rated screwdriver and nutdriver bits in convenient pocket cases.

I didn’t know some were made in Canada. Interesting.

    Any Megapro vs Rolgear thoughts?

Rolgear I had trouble with bits falling out of handle and falling out of driver especially Phillips. Very annoying. Dream would be Rolgear clutch megapro bits. Went back to megapro

I’ve had one of these for years. It’s great when you have lots of screws to remove and/or install, like removing the pickguard from a guitar, for example.

These are great drivers, and excellent presents.

For some reason, for years the one that takes regular 1″ insert bits cost considerably more on Amazon. Now they’re the same. Go figure.

Swiss Tools also makes a ratcheting bit driver with bit storage, the Insider 3, but it costs close to three times as much.

By the way, Wera and Wiha doesn’t seem to make ratcheting bit screwdrivers with bit storage. Am I right?

Ha! I forgot about the Kompakt. I gave one to my brother years ago. Thanks!

I have a couple I bought from AG Russell back in the late 90’s that are still going strong. Bought some new ones a few years ago and did not notice a decrease in quality.

What is the price supposed to be? I clicked on the link and it was $32, which doesn’t appear to be a special price.

These never go on sale – $32 is approximately the regular price for the ratcheting screwdrivers.

Sorry, this is a gift idea/recommendations post, not a deal post.

We had the Dotty rebrand when I was doing sprinklers and alarms. Just called it the “Dotty tool” around the shop, security bit version for flow and tamper switch housings among other things. I felt the ergonomics were terrible, and that version had that cheap ‘million tiny raised dots’ grip style that shreds your hands in the winter, but none-the-less it was a loved tool that was all function regardless of form. Megapro has surely made a mint off just this one tool, and deservedly so.

Not my thing in any shape or form but it would be a way to use those 1” bits I throw away….

I’m not going to use a screwdriver that, when in a deep tight place, might disconnect the bit from the handle….

I’ve had one of these for a VERY long time (going on 2 decades, if I had to guess) and use it constantly… one of my best go-to screwdrivers. Have given multiple as gifts over the years, as well… no regrets. Didn’t actually realize they had so many other models!

Great tip! I picked one up and I’m glad I did. I recently prepped and repainted the ceiling of my carport and having this tool on my scaffold was ideal. In removing the old and installing my new overhead light I needed both Philips and flat tip screwdrivers, but having this Megapro multibit screwdriver I knew whatever I needed it would be readily available. I’ll be keeping it in my kitchen as a quick grab when I have the odd need for a screwdriver. I have others (from Milwaukee) but those are in my toolbag and not always handy.
