I came across an incredibly good deal on this Metabo HPT brushless reciprocating saw that ToolGuyd readers have been gushing over.
There’s a bit of a story to tell, and if you want to skip all that, here’s a shortcut to the buy link at bottom of this page.
It all started yesterday, when I posted about Dewalt’s new XR reciprocating saw, and how it has become my new go-to. Quite a few commentors had great things to say about the Metabo HPT model.

(That didn’t surprise me, as Metabo HPT makes fantastic tools.)
Today, a reader linked to its kit and remarked on the price, and how they saved $40 with the current holiday deal.
The price – $349 before $40 buy more, save more savings – seemed a little high. I did some shopping around, and saw that the tool-only saw is $179.

I then saw that Lowe’s has a “free gift with purchase” offer right now. Buy the Metabo HPT MultiVolt battery and charger starter kit, and you get the tool-only for FREE. So that’s $199 for all of it.
You don’t get the tool bag that comes with the full kit, but with an extra $110 in your pocket, that’s okay, right?
But WAIT. I found an even better deal.

While double checking on the tool-only price at Acme Tools, I saw that they have a different and even better deal.
Buy the Metabo HPT brushless reciprocating saw for $179, and you get a FREE starter kit with MultiVolt battery and charger.
That’s not all. The buy more, save more coupon code (BMSMHPT) also applies, saving you an extra $10 on top of that, bringing the total down to $169. I didn’t expect for the coupon discount to stack on top of the free starter kit offer, but it does!
Features & Specs
- Model CR36DAQ4M (tool-only)
- 4-speed selector (1700 – 3000 SPM)
- 1-1/4″ stroke length
- Orbital action
- Rafter hook
- LED light
- Dual counterweight system for lower vibration
- Brushless motor
- Starter kit comes with MultiVolt battery and charger
- 4Ah when used with HPT MultiVolt 36V tools
- 8Ah when used with HPT MultiVolt 18V tools
Kit: $349 – $40 = $309
This Offer: $179 + 0 -$10 = $169.
Sale Price: $169 for the tool-only and FREE starter kit
Get your Metabo HPT order over $199, and you save $20, or over $299 to save $40. Bring your total order amount total above $199 (after any discounts are applied), and you get free ground shipping.
You need to add at least $30 to your order to get free ground shipping, or $40 in coupon-eligible Metabo HPT tools and accessories.
Acme has other Metabo HPT deals that are also eligible for stacking promotions, where you also get a free MultiVolt battery or starter kit AND “buy more, save more” discount.
As far as I can tell, there’s no catch here. The starter kit is advertised as including the same 4Ah (18V 8Ah equivalent) battery as in the $349 kit.
You miss out on the tool bag, and maybe the starter blade, but $169 after discount (plus $6.49 shipping unless your order totals $199+) is a lot better than $309 after discount.

Seems like a different approach to deals at Lowe’s but I noticed that they have several Bosch items going now – buy the batteries and get a free tool. It varies by battery size/kit. For the 8Ah 2-pack for $179 you can pick a free tool and it’s a really great deal for several. The band saw and the 7″ miter saw were standouts. The 6Ah and 4Ah batteries had less attractive limited options for the free tool. Meanwhile, the Bosch displays in our local Lowe’s stores are a complete wreck with very few testers on display now and none of the new tools shown or with a rack/label although they are locked in the cage. Maybe they’re doing a refresh before black friday but the whole tool area seems to be in shambles.
If someone wants the Metabo saw here it might be worth buying into the platform as they have some other great tools, including their great work lights.

I see the 8Ah 2-pack for $269 (full price) online. Is the $179 price in-store only, or has that price expired?
$179 for a 2-pack of 8Ah batteries + a “free” bandsaw or miter saw would be a smoking deal.
JR Ramos
Ooops…my mistake, that was the 4Ah price. Yeah, $269 for the 2-pack of 8Ah or it looks like you get the same tool choices with the $229 single 8Ah+ charger. I usually find better pricing on the batteries on Amazon but they never have the promo deals there like Lowe’s does…always worth checking both.
Ken
Still a pretty good deal at $269 or $229.
I’m impatiently waiting for Bosch to bring their Core18V+ (tabless) batteries to the US.
JR Ramos
I’d like to see those too. Really wanting to pick up some more 18V sanders and that new trim router but I’ll wait until the deals are better.

I am not a big fan of 8, 10, or larger ah batteries. I find them heavy and cumbersome.
I have the HPT 4ah batteries and even on the rear handle circ saw, they last long enough.
I would definitely recommend the 4ah. If you want 8ah or larger, make sure you really need the extra gas tank.
JR Ramos
I think it depends on what the tool can/will draw and also on the particular battery. The Bosch 21700 cells seem quite capable of maintaining voltage and have a good cell capacity. The heat gun is one notable exception where the 4Ah will not power it adequately and the 8Ah or larger is really a necessity unless you can live with the low setting only and are doing really quick jobs like small/thinner heat shrink or labels and such. It’s a lot more capable with the 8Ah. I find on circular saws that the bigger batteries don’t hurt anything in terms of balance and on the Milwaukee 7″ Fuel it seems to actually improve the glide a little. Several tools (various brands) now really can feed a lot more power when given the larger lower resistance battery packs and the difference is really noticeable (a big part of that is maintaining the voltage level instead of falling flat like smaller packs (less shared load) or 18650 cells will do. Other tools you just get longer run time but not a boost in performance. So…really just depends. I think on drills, impact screwdrivers, recips, etc it doesn’t matter much at all.

Amce has the Dewalt cordless plunge router with 8ah power pack battery on sale for 299 with and extra $50 off with code Dewlt 100. This is $100 cheaper than HD. Only 10 hours left.

How does is compare in practice with the Milwaukee 2821, which you can get from the Depot for $100 for the bare tool with some finagling.?
The HPT has orbital and variable speed, but how do the compare in weight, vibration, economics, etc.?
TIA
Stuart
2821 is a great saw.
They come close with respect to specs, but the HPT has more features (speed control, orbital mode).
Frankly, I don’t think you could go wrong with either.
If I was buying new and didn’t care about the platform, I’d spend less to get the HPT. It only comes with 1 battery, but it charges pretty quickly.
If you’re already in the M18 platform, that model might be more convenient for you.
I haven’t tested the two side by side.

I have the non-orbital M18 Fuel saw and it really impresses me when I use it. I have a hard time believing it feels every bit as powerful as my Dewalt corded model.
A while back there were some good deals on the HPT recip saw, and I really wanted to get it…badly, but held off.
If I had to buy one (not having one), I would be in a pickle. The M18 really surprised at how powerful and robust it is, and it doesn’t even have orbital action. This saw is a brute.
The HPT has had a great reputation ever since they came out with the ant-vibration. Overall, I think I might take a chance on the HPT, just because of the orbital and AVP. But the M18 is a great choice for anyone that wants Milwaukee.
Dwayne
It is a big and bulky saw, and pretty heavy, but it’s one of the most powerful recip saws out there. I haven’t owned the milwaukee saw, but I have used it. This saw would be my pick.

Great post! I love my Metabo HPT saw and would buy it again if I needed another one 🙂

Atlas Machinery in Canada has had a similar deal with a lot of the Metabo HPT tools going since at least last December, including the recip saw tool only + free starter is 249cad, or 178USD, but free shipping starts at 149.

I have this saw and like it a lot. It’s heavy, a pound heavier than the milwaukee and two pounds heavier than the dewalts, and that’s before adding in the big multivolt battery, of which there is only a big one and a bigger one, but it’s more powerful too, the anti vibration works well.
CMF
Atlas had the deal I was thinking of earlier. IIRC, it was $199 CDN with the battery starter kit

I guess that I bit on the wrong deal at Acme – didn’t do the math and went with the $309 kit deal – got a really pricey bag.
fred
Thanks to Stuart’s heads-up I was able to cancel this order and change it over to the better deal.
Thanks again Toolguyd – My Nephew won’t miss the bag – and I threw in a 3pk of Milwaukee 12-inch carbide tipped blades and still saved $117
Stuart
I’m glad it worked out, and glad to help!

Great Post! Metabo HPT deserves some love. There’s almost always a good promotion (somewhere) on their tools. I have plenty of their tools and like each of them. I don’t have this MultiVolt saw, but I have the 18v version. It’s less powerful and feature packed, but does everything I need it to do. I also have their one-handed recip saw. It can accept jigsaw blades and is a great “problem solver” saw.

Just a quick comment on my Metabo HPT experience. I find them to be very reliable, and have great features. Their best tools (Triple Hammer, the MV recip saw, their battery and pneumatic nailers, the MultiVolt 1/2 impact wrench, and many of the MultiVolt circular saws) can beat or compete with any of the offerings from Teal, Red or Yellow platforms. There are still areas where those brands have a few superior offerings, particularly with OMTs and jigsaws. I consider their ergonomics to be top notch, right up there with Makita. I particularly like the light weight, the “quiet modes”, and IP-6* ratings for many of their tools. All of this at (usually) lower prices, and a lot less tribalism associated with the brand. Great innovation in their releases. The green color looks good, too!

I have this tool, it’s awesome. I’d love to see some of the newer Metabo HPT tools reviewed, in particular the new 36v circular saw “the stud”. Also if anyone reading this has the Metabo HPT 18v 2″ die grinder… Would you recommend? Thanks

Just scored 7/14 rear handle saw kit, 1/2” cordless router (bare), 1 extra battery, 1 extra battery starter kit for $308 before tax!

I bought the Metabo from Acme on the 4th and it arrived today on the 8th. The battery and charger did not. According to my order page, they have not even begun to prepare them for shipment. Last time buying from these guys.
Vards Uzvards
If it helps, they stated from the beginning that the battery kit will arrive separately, and very possibly at a later date.

Lowes has this saw as a free tool when you buy a rapid charger and 4/8 ah kit for $109.
The newer top handle saw is also definitely available for store pickup, for same deal, not sure about shipping. The rear handle saw may be available too.
