It’s no secret anymore, Milwaukee Tool’s Pipeline 2022 new tool event is just days away!

For the first time since Milwaukee NPS 2019, the popular tool brand will be showing off their latest and greatest new tools at a live event.

Milwaukee went virtual for 2020, and while informative, there’s nothing quite like seeing the newest releases firsthand.

The best part of live events, aside from testing the latest tools and accessories, is being able to ask tough questions to gain deeper insights. There’s always a lot to learn about the tech and challenges behind Milwaukee’s innovations and breakthroughs.

We don’t know what Milwaukee has been working on, but I know what I want to see.

Is this the year Milwaukee finally launches an M18 Fuel track saw? There have been many rumors over the years, but nothing official yet.

Will Milwaukee be announcing their own stacked-style lithium-ion batteries, similar to what Dewalt (PowerStack) and Flex brought to market earlier this year?

YES, we’ll be there. I’ll try my best to post the highlights to ToolGuyd’s Instagram channel, and I might also try to push quick video clips to ToolGuyd’s YouTube channel – if that’s something you might be interested in.

What new cordless power tools are you expecting? What do you want to see Milwaukee come out with?

Do you have any questions you want me to ask? Requests to pass along?

Responses to Readers’ Predictions & Requests

Here is a roundup of commentors’ predictions and requests:

M18 Cordless Track Saw – it’d be about time!

M18 Cordless Drills – I predicted a new subcompact drill last year, but we still haven’t seen it. It’s about time for an upgrade/refresh cycle. Here’s Milwauke’s M18 cordless drill/driver comparison chart. If they’re going to introduce a new model, they are likely to change it all up at once.

Cordless Jack – I don’t think this is likely, but an M18 model would be great!

Cooling Jacket for Hot Weather – Maybe, but there’s no signs or indication this is something Milwaukee is or would be working on.

Full-Size Router – Metabo HPT has a MultiVolt model, but an M18 1/2″ router might be nice. I’d say we’re 50-50 on this.

M18 Belt Sander – Readers shared there’s a new belt sander coming out in Europe, and so we might be seeing the same or something similar.

M18 Scooter – I’d say there’s a 0% chance of this, but one could hope.

M18 Auto Battery Jumper – I’d buy one, but it’d have to be inexpensive or multi-functional.

Powered Wheelbarrow or Cart – Makita has one, but it’s pricey and I’ve heard power-hungry. It’d be interesting to see what Milwaukee could do with such a product. Maybe they can have a flat-bottom attachment for hauling two stacks of Packout tool boxes around.

Updated M18 Surge – I don’t know… has the current model ever been lacking?

Updated M12 Fuel Jigsaw – Yes, the existing M12 model is long in the tooth, but so are other M12 tools. I don’t know how much of a priority an M12 Fuel version would be for them.

Cordless Pressure Cleaner/Washer – Just because other brands have one, that doesn’t mean Milwaukee will look to compete. Milwaukee has reminded us in the past that they’re not a “me too” brand. But if they can make something smaller, lighter, or better. And competing models have been out for a while, surely they’ve gauged demand and interest from M12 and M18 users. I’d say this is a “maybe.”

Rolling Packout Base with Extending Handle – I’ve heard this request a lot, for a rolling Packout base that combines their dolly with their rolling tool box, but without the tool box part. So, basically a Packout dolly with large rear wheels and an extending handle.

M12 Fuel Rotary Tool – I don’t think this is a high priority for the brand, but it’d certainly be nice to see.

Large Circular Saw – An 8-1/4″ circular saw sounds possible. I’d give this one 3-1 odds.

*High quality hand tools, current one’s suck really bad, have them made in Germany by Kniplex or somebody.

Maybe some M18 x2 tools ala Makita. Like a 10-1/4 inch (or even 12inch) saw – but the Milwaukee being rear handled – with a base compatible with that track they will introduce with their track saw.

Also how about expanding their MX lineup to start selling some of the items they have teased about – and other things like a plate compactor, a post auger, a concrete wall saw, a pipe threading machine, a walk behind trencher, a walk behind vacuum and a zero-turn mower

I would like an electric jack. Would be super in an m12 format and would be a great companion for the m12 inflator. I don’t know if it is feasible to do, but it would seem somewhat straightforward to make an electric hydraulic hybrid.

Also, I’m always a sucker for area lights.

That would be useful for people who rotate tires (Tesla Mobile Service) or replace tires (Tire Rack Mobile Installer) at the customer’s home or office. I think that type of service will become more common as EVs become more popular. And those technicians will need all kinds of specialized tools that are not currently on the market.

I’d be curious about tape measures. The current Wide Blades seem to be an excellent tape that’s a good compromise between the Stud and everything else. I’ve seen a lot of them with tradespeople, and Milwaukee’s tapes in general seem to be gaining ground in general. Will there be a new “latest and greatest”? What improvements will be made? I’m curious about that specifically, but all news is great! Have fun!

A cooling jacket would be impressive tech to work out. I bet someone
is doing some research with peltier coolers, but the circulation/heat-transfer through the jacket/vest is going to be really tough to engineer in a durable way. Then you have to figure out how to radiate the heat from the peltier. Most devices rely on pretty bulky fins and fans.

No scooter, as that would be a cardinal sin when it came to branding. However, there are tons of boutique manufacturers making 3d printed battery adapters for just about every major power tool platform, including m18 and m12. A lot of these adapters are making their way into ebike/scooter repower projects.

If they were smart they’d make a track saw and then also release a plate adapter or part swap to use their track with their normal circ saw devices. and their track would be compatible with _____.

A battery bank power supply in M18 like the dewalt would be neat for friends of mine.

and that jack is a idea but what capacity? stop at 3ton for most applications go for for a HO model at 5-6 ton. I’d almost like to see them make it an airbag system vs a traditional jack too. so it’s useful for also pickup up items.

I want a new rolling Packout base that starts with a low center of gravity and doesn’t generally need to be unstacked. A compressor is the first thing that comes to mind.

The next generation of compressors and vacuums should be activated by foot pedal and optional remotes, both manual and automatic based on battery draw.

Milwaukee realistically doesn’t need any new tools. Milwaukee could rest on its laurels and just cruise with reheated leftovers for at least the next 5 years on its reputation and name recognition.

The fact is that Milwaukee has been slowly but surely losing its edge in the power department. Milwaukee is no longer heads and shoulders over any of the competition, unlike in, say, 2016, when DeWalt was resting on its laurels and Makita was content making competent if not flashy/super powerful tools.

Want the most powerful angle grinder? DeWalt.

    Most powerful circular saw? DeWalt.

    Most powerful impact driver? Flex.

Most powerful blower? Definitely not the rather pathetic M18 blower (450 cfm/120mph)

Most powerful string trimmer? The overheating M18 fuel trimmer?

Most powerful sawzall? Definitely not the Super Sawzall anymore.

Most powerful hole hawg? Again, definitely not the super hawg anymore.

The competition has done more than knock on Milwaukee’s door. The competition has blown the door down.

Now, of course, power isn’t everything, and Milwaukee has a very healthy lead with regard to user loyalty.

The future is here and the future is >1800 watts continuous output from power tool batteries.

Forget about 15 amp (1800 watt) corded performance.

The future is >15 amp corded performance in your hand and gas engine performance in your hand.

Milwaukee’s 18v 16″ chainsaw was impressive when it was released a few years back for a low-voltage platform but what’s really impressive is DeWalt’s 20″ FlexVolt chainsaw.

Staying in 18v fantasy land will work for the next 5 years if the goal is pure profit but it isn’t a viable long-term strategy without some serious redesign of the battery pack.

Literally EVERY power tool company with aspirations to compete at the top (except Milwaukee) has seriously redesigned their battery packs in the last few years. DeWalt with its 20/60v flexvolt technology, not to mention DeWalt’s new power stack pouch cell batteries. Metabo HPT with the 18/36v multivolt packs. Makita and 40v XGT. Flex, first with 24-volt packs and now lithium-ion pouch cells. Hilti, with their new 22v Nuron platform and special low-resistance 21700 cells. I find the Hilti battery packs interesting as they don’t use the traditional Korean cells but rather something unique.

Milwaukee is going to have to pull a rabbit out the hat if Milwaukee’s goal is to stay relevant and not go the way of NiCad tool batteries. The future is here. Other tool companies aren’t afraid of platform fragmentation and new batteries that aren’t 100% cross-compatible. New platforms and new batteries haven’t tanked a tool company yet. But what will tank a tool company is poor performance: all Black & Decker 20v batteries work in all B&D 20v tools, but not all DeWalt li-ion batteries will work in all DeWalt tools, but who cares?

The thing about Milwaukee is they serve many trades in 3 platforms. That is kinda where they live right now. Of course you can find better performing individual tools in other brands, but what is that worth to you? Hilti makes great stuff but how do they fare in OPE? Automotive repair? Plumbing? Pretty much everybody with the exception of Bosch does better in those areas.

Flex just launched not that long ago so of course they’re ahead in some regards, they’re platform isn’t 10+ years old. DeWalt I’d say has been doing the best to diversify and catch up to Milwaukee and they’re making great stuff right now.

Also, while power is great and other platforms are utilizing different battery tech through higher volts, those power gains come at a cost, mainly weight and more expensive tools and batteries. This is Makita’s problem. They kinda did the lxt x2 platform as a band-aid for getting more runtime/power out of their ope line. Ok, so with this new xgt 40v, why are they still doing the x2 thing? Doesn’t really make sense since that’s supposed to be a better platform for OPE. Also, the xgt platform bulks up their impacts and drills which isn’t a great thing.

Milwaukee does everything I need it to do in the power department and I don’t need to invest in a new platform if I just want a “good enough” chainsaw or a weed eater ( yeah I’ll say it, they’re ope is kinda an afterthought rn). The power stack style batteries will come for Milwaukee, not a big hurdle. I want to see more refinements and compactness from them along the lines of what DeWalt is doing with their impact drivers/guns and drills.

You’re absolutely correct. I criticize Milwaukee and its supposed lack of power yet almost all my tools are Milwaukee M12. Their 12 volt line does everything I need to do in my business.

That being said, I do think that Milwaukee is going to be facing a fairly unpleasant reality pretty soon with regard to MX Fuel. MX fuel was supposed to be Milwaukee’s answer to higher demand tools–tools that mainly use gas engines. But the problem is that we’re already capable of getting gas engine performance without a shoebox sized battery. It’s called DeWalt Flexvolt. It’s called Makita XGT (X2). It’s called Hilti Neuron (X2). At world of concrete, DeWalt, Hilti, and Makita demonstrated breaker hammers that were in the ballpark of the MX Fuel Jackhammer but with just regular tool sized batteries and with batteries that work on drills and impacts, unlike MX Fuel.

I just can’t see MX Fuel being successful with other competitors getting similar performance out of smaller, more versatile, and more cross compatible batteries.

M18 Fuel is going to have to step into some HUGE shoes if it wants to approach the 40-50 ft lbs of impact energy that you can get from the Flexvolt, XGT, and Hilti breaker hammers.

Power depends a lot on what your specific needs are. I have a lot of M12 tools. For me those have been the sorts of tools where I value compact size more than anything and for those kinds of tools power isn’t very important. Things like compact die grinders, automotive ratchets, inspection camera, etc. I don’t really care if a competitor has a tool which is more powerful or gets better battery life; the whole point why I chose M12 is because of the compact size and the battery fitting inside the grip. There is one M12 tool where I sort of regretted buying it instead of a 20V Max Dewalt: a 5 1/2″ circ saw. The Dewalt would have been more powerful. But that M12 is still good enough to plunge-cut 3/8″ steel plate with a Diablo blade on it so honestly it’s hard to complain.

Now for “full size” power tools like a 7 1/4″ circ saw, sawzall, stud/joist drill, angle grinder, big impact wrench, OPE, etc, then power absolutely does matter. And for the heaviest classes of tools like big cutoff saws, SDS Max rotary hammers, big chainsaws, power is perhaps all-important. I agree with your thoughts about MX fuel vs. Flexvolt, XGTx2, Neuronx2, etc, 100%. Take a big rotary hammer for example. I’d never consider buying an MX Fuel given my current needs. That’s a tool I use very rarely and I wouldn’t want to buy into an expensive new battery platform that I wouldn’t get any other use out of. Now a Flexvolt rotary hammer? That’s more attractive since I can at least get good use out of the batteries even if I don’t use the tool all that much.

Yes, I agree about the MX line. I’m sure it serves a niche market but man the stuff is expensive and doesn’t compete with anybody that does battery powered OPE as their bread and butter just based on price. My dealer made the mistake of ordering an MX inverter and they took a bath on it just to get it off the books.

If I did concrete demo a lot I wouldn’t own Milwaukee, but they work well enough if it’s something that a contractor does just here and there it’s fine.

When we talk about the “most powerful,” we are talking about a tiny gap between those tool brands, like seconds saving work time or a few increased numbers in drill hammering hits!

I don’t think “most powerful” is a significant factor in deciding which tool company you will subscribe to.

IMO, the essential things in choosing which brand you will be loyal to are:
One, the new tools and innovations they will come with.
Two, how long and serious the tool brand is willing to stack to the battery platform.
Three: warranty and replacement parts availability.

Other than that, “most powerful” and such are just marketing gimmicks.

I only went with Milwaukee because they have shown me the commitment to stick with 18v and 12v battery platforms.

Other than that, I would be buying cheap Chines brands or Harbors Fright!

We’re talking about a tiny gap in some cases and a massive gap in other cases. This gap is only growing. Like in the case of OPE, nothing that Milwaukee makes in OPE is exactly the most powerful in its class apart from perhaps their 36v mower with 2 12.0 batteries. The M18 leaf blower has the dubious honor of being barely stronger than a Black and Decker 20v blower. Relatively small 16″ trimmer with vibration issues. 3/4″ hedge trimmer when leaders are on 1″. Small 16″ chainsaw that gets destroyed by DeWalt or Ego.

Milwaukee wants to be the professional’s choice and I agree that a tiny performance gap won’t make a big difference but a steadily increasing gap will, especially in OPE. And not just in OPE, but also concrete related trades. Those are the main two fields that come to mind. Milwaukee table 1 compliant cordless dust extractors, non existent apart from maybe their recently dropped shop vacs. Milwaukee SDS hammers, outclassed by DeWalt since 2016.

I would like to see the M18 chain saw revamped. I have been wanting one but the feel of it is just not quite right. Not sure what it is and maybe I am just stuck on the feel of a gas saw. There is something in the grip that needs attention. Tools need to feel good in the hand and that one is lacking in my opinion.

A 10″ random orbital polisher that dosent stall under light pressure and has replacement backing pads as they tend to wear out over time.. most likely utilizing the M18 battery system . If Milwaukee can pursue that this will definitely take business over all the other pieces of garbage out there that don’t offer replacement pads & stall under light pressure

I’ve been noticing some OPE additions to the Quik Lok extension line: Bristle Brush (broom), Brush Cutter (portable brush hog), Rubber Broom (yard rake).

I’ve recently picked up the rest of the Quik Lok OPE at blowout pricing, and I’ve been wanting a powered broom for a while, so I’m looking forward to this.

Wishlist: M18 lopper/pruning cutter. For now I’ll keep using my Hackzall for that chore.

The platform wouldn’t support 2000psi. Maybe 750. I think DeWalt is only like 500psi.

Yea even the Ryobi 40v cordless pressure washer can’t touch 2000 PSI.

Milwaukee’s M18 pressure washer would just fall in the ballpark of 500-700 PSI.

A 2000 PSI pressure washer is going to be pulling 1500+ watts continuously from the wall. There’s no Milwaukee M18 battery capable of this for any significant period of time. The 12.0 can theoretically do this but it’s going to thermal overload in a heartbeat. Anything smaller, forget about it. Maybe M18x2 for a few minutes.

I mostly own Milwaukee, a few from Makita and Bosch. I’ve been rather nonplussed with Milwaukee in recent years as they just can’t seem to fill in the blanks in their existing tools (all those little details that are easy to improve/change that they just won’t do). They have a lot of good things going and I still perk up for announcements and news but they’ve given me a pretty healthy dose of skepticism toward any words and products, sad to say.

I think I’d like to see them reenter the electric tool category someday with smaller stationary shop tools, perhaps prosumer benchtop shop tools. There is such void out there where the cheapest have only gotten cheaper over the decades and that decent upper low end/middle range has all but disappeared. This would be a major investment but I think the market is there. Right now it seems that Wen and perhaps Shopfox, maybe Grizzly, fill some of the need but it could all be done a little better and Milwaukee/TTI has the oomph if they were interested.

I’d like to see a little M12 trim router, too. The M18 is a small beast, very nice and capable tool, but the M12 could fill some needs for some.

They REALLY need to work on making accessories and common consumables more readily available outside of a service center that will usually have a multi-week lead time for special orders, if they can even get it.

And put a damn bit holder or two on the M12 driver bodies somehow.

Ask when they’re going to have some sort of a snap on dust cover for the pack out milk crates. It would never be strong enough to stack other things on top of but for storage purposes it would be nice to just keep site dust and debris out of those bins. I tried saranwrap but all the rest of the guys just laughed at me…

18v Portable power supply that has a 65w usb-c output to charge my Lenovo laptop. They just need to upgrade the current one to a higher output. That would be awesome for me. I know I can use the Lenovo power brick and use the 120v outlet but that is more to carry and not as efficient going from battery-to ac-to battery. Doubt this will happen but I can dream 😴

Re: M18 surge, and if the current one is lacking or not:

I’d say yes, absolutely. Especially considering it in comparison to the m12 surge. You drop a bunch of weight for roughly similar performance.

The weight/performance ratio is an area where milwaukee is in real danger of losing ground to Dewalt. Hell, I was using an m12 fuel for the last 2ish years as my everyday driver in the HVAC startup field, and I’ve recently swapped it out for dewalt’s newer atomic compact impact driver with a powerstack battery. The outcome is a faster driver for about the same weight, a more compact head, although without the creature comforts of a hydronic drive train (meaning: quieter, softer vibrations, and more controllable torque for small fasteners).

If milwaukee could work around making the m18 surge a bit lighter, with higher RPMs and a noticeable improvement over the m12 in torque while dropping the weight and size of their exsting m18 a touch, I’d happily switch back. The reduction in noise is a real ear saver in reflective environments, and there’s something about the hydraulic drive train that 5/16 and 1/4 head self tappers so much easier to control.

I trade some of that low end control for higher torque and faster speeds on the compact atomic drill. Dewalt did an awesome job of making their #1 speed more usable on this one. Milwaukee has an opportunity to tweak their a bit to inhabit a nice middle ground that the original m18 surge is really getting phased out of.

Totally agree with this. I feel this is the jump Milwaukee needs to make this year pretty much across the board. With the dcf891 mid-torque impact gun out and the rumored high torque gun dcf900 coming down the pipe, plus their atomic line in stores already, Milwaukee has to be getting nervous about losing market share in their bread and butter. The m18 surge has been an awesome driver for me, but it’s due for an overhaul.
