Over at Amazon, they have a new deal on this Mora Companion knife, a fixed-blade outdoors knife with 4.1″ carbon steel blade and olive green sheath and handle accents.

Despite being aimed at outdoors enthusiasts, Mora knives are also very capable and versatile for workshop, jobsite, and around-the-home tasks.

This is an “okay” price; the knife has a list price of $18. I believe that $15 is really its average price, but the price did recently drop down to $15 after sitting at $18 for around 2 months.
Amazon usually has Mora Companion knives on sale in early December, but this is the only color and style featured in their new promo listing. It’s uncertain as to whether there will be any other Mora knife sales.

Great blades at a great price point. I have many of them and always buy more this time of year. Good stocking stuffers. I just wish they were full tang, but you aren’t going to get that at that price point.

Almost identical to the craftline above but has a little more steel. I occasionally use it in wood or mdf where I might otherwise reach for a chisel or a plane. There’s both enough flat and bevel on the blade to help guide it with my thumb.

I think based on Stuart’s recommendations – I bought a batch of Mora Eldris (short – 59mm blade) as stocking stuffers in 2017. Based on the positive feedback I got – a batch of Mora Companions were bought in 2018. I don’t think I’ll repeat this year – but they are no-nonsense really useful knives sold at a very reasonable price.

Their fillet knife is fantastic too. I got the 6 inch version for $22 I think. Tried it tonight and it was great. Super sharp, great handle. For the Companion, consider the stainless blade version if you need to store it in less than perfect conditions. I have the stainless blade Companions and have been happy with their sharpness/edges.

Yep, that’s an okay price for a Companion, but these guys are a screaming bargain even at their regular prices. I’d go for a stainless steel model though. Mine gets more than sharp enough, and keeps that edge long enough for me. And obviously, it is easier to take care of than a carbon steel blade.
The Craftline is more of a carving or whittling knife, with the handle that is designed to be comfortable in basically any position. But it will do very well for outdoors tasks too.
If people don’t know, they both have what’s known as a Scandi grind, where the primary bevel is all there is; there is no microbevel (actually there is, out of the box, but the first sharpening will remove it if you want.) The advantage is that it is incredibly bite-y. It will not skate across a surface. It’s supposed to be the best grind for whittling and carving. Also, it’s easy to sharpen in the field with a handheld stone. You just hold the stone flat against the bevel and grind until the knife is sharp again. Of course, that takes longer than just adding a microbevel.
I’ve heard of people putting a taper grind on one, like a chef’s knife, but it seems like a lot of work, and weakens the blade somewhat, though it might help prevent binding in stiff materials like some vegetables.
