Mora Knives Deal of the Day 12-15-18

Over at Amazon, today’s deal of the day features a whole lot of Mora fixed blade knives. (Thank you AW for the tip!)

Mora knives are made in Sweden (I haven’t seen any exceptions to this at least), and are usually a great value, When on sale like this, they’re almost a must-buy.

Mora Companion Knife Blue

The Mora Companion knife, on sale for as little as $9.72 AND eligible for extra 5% savings, is a great place to start. It has a 4.1″ stainless steel blade, comfortable grip, and color-matched plastic sheath.

Mora Chisel Knife

There are a bunch of other Mora knife styles on sale – the Craftline Pro, Craftline carpentry chisel (it’s even less than last year’s holiday deal!), the smaller Eldris “pocket” knife, and even Bushcraft-specific models. There are a couple of Mora carving knives on sale too.

What’s the big deal about Mora knives? They’re good quality fixed-blade knives, useful for all kinds of things, and they’re extremely inexpensive. They’re made in Sweden.

I have a couple, and use them in the shop, home, and garden.

I’ve talked about Mora Companions about 15 times here. On top of being cheap, sharp, and durable, they are ergonomically superior to any folding knife. The handle is comfortable no matter how you hold it, and the knife isn’t pointlessly heavy. People might quibble about the rattail tang, but I have found it easily sturdy enough. The sheath is secure, durable, and rattle-free.

The only downside is that most cities won’t let you carry a 4″ knife on your person. It might have to stay in the car, tool box, etc.

I have heard of people giving a Mora a full flat grind. The advantage is they bind less in a cut. The disadvantage is that the blade is less robust. Also it takes a lot of time.

As a Swede, I grow up with Moraknivar . Strongest recommendation is Mora 106 Wood carving knife. Probably one of the sharpest and durable knifes on the prosumer market. There is also a sub-brand for professionals; Mora Frost. Too expensive for most prosumers through (all items are benchmade by humans and ABB IRB6 robots..)

I like these knives, good company, too. Not sure where they source the metal from but comparing to many othe manufacturers their steel is miles ahead of the competition and, while I don’t completely agree with their prices, not one tool had failed on me so far. I especially like the pseudo-chisels, they work in ways no other tools do, for carpentry in general and, if you went to be specific, for installing and mounting kitchen cabinets. The closest competitor to them is Dewalt or Stanley and they’re not even in the same league!

I was told at a seminare about knife history held by the Morakniv VP a couple of years ago that one type of steel (Carbon or Stainless, I dont remember which) was imported to Sweden from France because it was the only place that manufactured it.

All Mora knives are made in their factory in the town of Mora (20000 inhabitants) about 3.5 hours north of Stockholm.

True – they use mainly 3 various steele types — carbon, stainless & laminated. Due to expensive transport cost (and high volume manufacturing) Morakniv tries to source the various special steeles localy

I bought three more of the chisels with the deal. Either will be extras or gifts. I have a huge pile of Moraknivs now, usually purchased under $10/ea as Amazon deals.

The companions are fantastic, the chisels are amazing. Everything else I have picked up is absolutely worth it. Hard to believe these exist at this price. Wonderful knives for use around the property.

Amazon says my package is damaged and undeliverable. Third time that has happened this season, always on promo price items. This is getting really old.

Every time I have to contact them for a refund, and there is no offer to resend the product at the promo price. I am starting to think they are overselling promo items and then claiming they are undeliverable.
