The Newton is a rather nifty bookshelf idea that suspends a few books off the wall with only two L hooks and an old c-clamp. This design also looks to be easily copyable and adaptable. Maybe something similar can be constructed using a modified handscrew clamp?

Neat little idea. Would look cool near a work bench, as it held reference books.

Looks handy for someone with 3 arms.

Hmm… I didn’t even think of that. Every time a book needed to be referred to, the entire assembly would need to be taken down and reclamped on a table. Compensating for this with springs or whatnot would probably destroy the classy minimalist appearance.

sorry that’s just totally impractical

Maybe flipping the C-clamp upside down would make it more functional

Not only would this require an extrodinary amount of time to add or remove a book, but the pressure required to actually keep the books in the clamp would likely damage the books themselves. I’m a form follows function type of guy, so this is a horrid idea.
A much better minimalist option is to build a shelf out of one book (by bolting a “L” bracket to the interior of the book itself and then glue the bottom cover of the book to the bracket so it doesn’t fall open yet still hides the bracket and bolt heads) and then stack other books on top of it. The end result is a floating stack of books with no visible hardware.
