Torin Magnetic Pegboard Accessory

Over at Amazon, they have these magnetic pegboard tool holders on sale as part of a larger deal on miscellaneous automotive tools and accessories.

I have not seen this type of accessory before, but it seems like it could be a handy way to mount bulky tools to a pegboard.

Torin shows off the Big Red magnetic tool holders with general purpose hand tools, and in their product video they also show it being used with tools that are not easily compatible with common pegboard hooks, such as metal tin snips and automotive pry bars.

The magnetic pegboard tool holders have a squeeze-action locking mechanism that helps to keep them in place.

Each holder measures 2″ x 2″, and they are also low-profile to help things look neat and tidy.

I can’t find any details about pegboard compatibility, or any weight limits.

  2. I’ve seen these before. Under the Husky brand at Home Depot. It’s in the pegboard section. They have other ones too, that hold a can of WD40, Wrenches, etc. The Husky ones are all black and chrome.

  3. I HAVE seen those before.

    I decided to add a pegboard panel to my home office recently to clear up some of the clutter from my desk. This was one of the products I considered when looking for options to mount my stuff. I didn’t end up buying it because I didn’t trust that the tool I was trying to mount would be held securely enough (a stapler – but that’s because the stapler has a plastic shell with metal guts, not because I thought there was a defect with this pegboard accessory).

  7. I got a bunch of these when Lowes clearanced out the Torin model years ago. I use them to hold pocket knives on the board and scissors. Don’t drop them as the plastic tabs will surely break on impact, just moved and had to reload the board and dropped one….

    • I have one of those holders with the clips and I find the hold is a bit too strong — I feel like I have to wrestle the screwdriver out of the clip. Plan to replace it with something else (possibly magnetic) in the near future.

      • You can make your own out of a scrap of 1×3 , 1×4 or even 1×6.
        Hardwood works better – but clear pine will do. You layout lines lengthwise on the board for drilling holes for the screwdriver shafts. Spacing can be done using a circle template – choosing circle diameters that are slightly larger than the diameter of each screwdriver handle – and allowing enough room between each driver and the each driver and the pegboard. Once your layout is done and center lines for each screwdriver is marked – you can drill clearance holes for the shafts and slightly countersink them to clean up any rough edges. Then you will need 2 square bend hook screws – careful to buy a size that will fit into the hole of your pegboard:

        Then take your homemade screwdriver holder and hold its edge horizontally against your pegboard so that its roughly centered on the holes. Mark the position of the 2 outmost pegboard holes on the back of your wooden shelf/rack. These are the positions along the back edge of your board where to will drill starter holes for your screw hooks. Those holes should be drilled in the center (top to bottom) of the board. Before screwing the screw hooks into the board you will need to cut (Plane or sand) a 45 degree relief (chamfer) along the top of the board’s edge – starting from the position holes for your 2 hooks. This will allow the whole shelf to be tilted into the pegboard. Once your chamfer is done you screw the hooks into the shelf – allowing enough space between the up-facing L and the shelf for the thickness of your pegboard. With a bit of trial and error you can get the shelf to fit snugly at 9o ggrees to the pegboard – and you rack is then done. Once you made one the next is easy.

  9. I have them and use them on my HF workbench pegboard. They are ok. They don’t always fit the pegboard spacing holes and can be quite difficult to remove from place to place. Could be the HF pegboard but not everywhere on it. The mechanism to squeeze them together to place/ remove is sometimes challenging.

    Would I buy them again? No.

    • Actually your comment raises a good point. For the pegboard I put up in my office I bought a galvanized metal panel so I could just use magnets directly on it when appropriate.

      The galvanized panel is certainly more expensive than wood fiber pegboard, but it might be a lot cheaper than if you start buying specialty magnetic adapters.

    • Well, I think you could stop with just putting a tool on the magnet.

      I don’t think magnets are good for every tool (like my 14″ hand plane), but they are good for others, like my combination square. And they’re faster an less fiddly than hooks.

  12. I’m going to try these. They’re just small magnetic studs that screw into pegboard. You can place several close together for heavy tools, or use just one for light tools. The threads are deep and sharp, to hold well in pegboard. The magnets are neodymium and can hold 1 lb. each. They have a thin friction pad to improve the hold and prevent marring.

  13. As a cheaper alternative to these, I installed several horizontal rows of the 18 inch magnetic strips sold at Harbor Freight (they used to have them as free promotional items). I temporarily removed the pegboards and bolted them on from the back (spacing for the mounting holes was just about right). They work really well for many hand tools, and horizontal spacing of the tools can be freely adjusted for each item. I have pegboards above my workbench and was tired of pulling the hooks off along with the tools.

  15. 100 bucks says if your pegboard isn’t totally and completely isolated from your workbench, that the first time you WHACK Hard on something laid upon your bench, whatever’s magnetically attached will come crashing down…..

  16. I like new ways of doing things. I’ve even been known to buy things I don’t really need. But these have no attraction for me. I like the process of carefully arranging my pegboards using the appropriate hanger. Every so often I re-hang the boards with a feeling of accomplishment when I’m done.

    These are…. not for me.
