Petzl Pixa LED Headlamps

Petzl Pixa LED Construction Headlamp

As I mentioned before, I’m a big fan of LED headlamps. Headlamps provide bright and diffuse illumination right where I need it, hands-free. But some of them are not exactly suitable for DIY use, let alone jobsite and professional use. Heavier users need headlamps more suited for their needs, headlamps like Petzl’s Pixas.

The Petzl Pixa comes in 4 flavors – the 1, 2, 3, and 3R. My favorite is the Pixa 1, which features very wide and diffuse lighting for close-up work. The Pixa 2 has two lighting modes for close-up and mid-range lighting.

Pixa 3 features three lighting modes for close-up, mid-range, and long-distance illumination. The Pixa 3R is a rechargeable and configurable version of the Pixa 3.

Although a little bulkier than some of Petzl’s more sports and outdoors-focused models, Pixa headlamps are built to be stronger and tougher. They’re waterproof to IP67 ratings, which means you can drop your Pixa in a 1-meter deep puddle for 30-minutes without ill effects. An oversized control knob means less fumbling when you’re wearing gloves.

My pick is the Pixa 1, because I do a lot of close-up work and it looked to have the best wide-beam specs. The Pixa 3 features the best of all worlds – a very decent wide beam, a bright mid-range beam, and a nice long-distance throw. Pixa 2 offers a little bit of everything.

Pixas are powered by 2xAA batteries, except for the 3R which comes with a rechargeable battery pack.

Prices range from $40-$75 for the Pixa 1, 2, and 3, and the 3R is about $140.

And here’s a cute video showing how well the Pixa enjoys being tossed around:
