Power Tool Clearance at Home Depot

Jan 12, 2010 Stuart 19 Comments

If you buy something through our links, ToolGuyd might earn an affiliate commission.

There is a power tool clearance going on at Home Depot, with some tools selling for more than half-off. Following are some of the deals that you can expect to find:

Milwaukee M12 3/8″ drill + radio $79 (compared to $180 on Amazon)
Dewalt 4-pc cordless tool set $200 (hard to find in stock; $500 on Amazon)
Dewalt 6-pc cordless tool set $300 (also very hard to find; $630 on Amazon)
Ryobi Tek4 5pc set, for $50
Ridgid 10″ granite top table saw $300

There were a few other clearance items, such as a Ridgid 4-1/2″ angle grinder for <$50, but they haven’t been confirmed at other stores yet.

Some of these items have already been cleared out of stores, and we expect that stock will rapidly dwindle as word of the clearance gets out.

These clearance prices are only found in-store, not online, and there is the possibility that some Home Depot stores are not participating in the clearance.

Just picked up the 6 piece DeWalt combo, thanks for the heads up. Local HD had one 6 piece and one 4 piece left at 9am this morning.

My local store is showing much higher prices on these items. Still, it’s a little bit scary to consider that HD may be “dumping” these tools elsewhere.

Word on the street is that all (most?) stores will be adjusting their prices on these products by the 16th.

My recommendation would be to buy what you want at full price, if they’re still in stock, and wait to see if the prices drops. If they do drop, you can go back for a price adjustment. If not, you can always return the item(s) for a full refund.

Something big is happening, but we won’t know what until these tools are gone and new ones take their place.

Went by HD to see if I could score the miter saw but they were all out of stock. The story I got from the tool guy at HD was that DeWalt was unwilling to sell exclusively so HD was going to cut back on thier in-store items. Apparently HD was no competition from other local sellers on powertools. I was told Rigid and Milwaukee would be sold exclusively at HD.

I’m curious too about what’s going on. Christmas is past, it’s not black friday, not cyber monday…. I remember a while back there was talk that HD was replacing the Husky line of hand tools. A few years later and Husky is still on the shelves.

I will probably check back everyday until the 16th, but I’m actually hoping I don’t find anything. I just bought a cordless set, which took me a long time to decide on, and now I don’t want to have any regrets!!!

I don’t know… while conflict over a potential exclusivity agreement is one plausible theory, I’d think that the reason is far simpler. It could just be that Dewalt is looking to move the NiCad line to the back burner and focus more on Li-Ion tools and combo sets.

Then there’s also the possibility that Home Depot merely wanted to clear older stock from the shelves very rapidly.

I took a look at Dewalt cordless circular saw kits at two Lowes locations and a Home Depot lately. At one Lowes, there was a single saw on the shelf with a production date sticker that said 2007, and at the other there were two saws with 2008 date stickers. At the one Home Depot I recently visited, there were two saws with 2009 stickers and Dewalt’s current black and yellow styling, as opposed to all-yellow as with the older saws.

Another possibility that was suggested elsewhere, is that Dewalt is soon moving to offer more affordable kits.

Over the winter holiday season, both Lowes and Home Depot stocked $100 Dewalt cordless drill kits that practically flew off of the shelves. No doubt these special kits had standard capacity batteries, but with charging times as quick as they are these days, that’s all that many cordless users need.

Long story short, my theory is that Home Depot intended to clear out these tools to make space for newly configured combo kits.

If you check HD online (as of 1/21/10) these sets are available online, at the same prices. For example, the Dewalt 6 piece kit is $300 (DCK655X)
You get free shipping over $50 also.
It’s under the “special values promotions”

I’m REALLY struggling not to buy this set. The cons right now are only 2 batteries and 1 charger for 6 tools.

Right now I have 7 tools, 4 batteries, and 2 chargers for less than $250 (homeowner brand which I won’t mention)

Darn, darn, darn, darn, darn. They’re all out of stock. I really wanted one of the four piece kits for the circular saw.

Ah well, my tool budget couldn’t handle it anyways. But that certainly won’t stop me from refreshing the page every five minutes to see if it pops back in stock!

well, the 6 piece set is also out of stock, but unlike you, I’m kind of relieved!

Tools are a constant daily struggle. My set works fine for my needs; it does what I ask it to do….HOWEVER I’m always yearning for a fancy Dewalt or Milwaukee set….

Personally, I enjoy variety and trying out different brands. One of these days I’ll pick up a full cordless set when the need arises, but until then, piecemeal it is!

But what about having a bunch of different batteries and chargers?

I don’t have that many cordless tools, and when I do have several out concurrently, there are at most 2-3 chargers plugged in.

You save a LOT by going with a cordless combo kit than if you were to buy the tools separately, but once you have a core combo kit with a charger and two batteries, you can always order a barebones standalone tool.

However, with a combo kit you’re usually locked into buying tools that you otherwise might not buy. I don’t really have need for a cordless hammer drill or recip saw, nor do I need additional cordless work lights.

It all comes down to preference and usage requirements. If my utility power strip ever gets as cluttered as my gadget/electronics one is, it may be the time to reconsider my affinity for buying different brands’ cordless tools.

regarding trying different brands, have you tried Metabo yet?

Not just yet, many of their tools are above my budget.

Not included tools being evaluated and reviewed for ToolGuyd, I purchased Hitachi, Bosch, Ridgid, Dremel, Craftsman, and Dewalt cordless and/or corded tools in the past three years.

Next on the wish list for personal use tools are Milwaukee and Makita. Further down the wishlist are Hilti, Festool, Fein, Metabo, and others, but it will probably be quite some time before/if I can get to them.

ah yes, Festool was the other high-end name I was thinking of.

Speaking of Hilti, I’ve noticed at several Home Depots, a $250 Hilti combo pack that includes a reciprocating saw and a huge drill. It may be a huge 1″ SDS hammer drill. I’m probably way off. Anyhow, the packaging states “limited quantities” in yellow.

I didn’t check the part numbers, unfortunately, but it struck me as a good value, because Hilti tools are typically $300 each.

Next time I’m in HD I will try to get some picts if they are still there.

Interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hilti at Home Depot. I wonder if they’re in stock in your area as part of a trial program. Either that, or my local stores are not as fully stocked.

Were they in the rental or contractor service area, or the regular power tool display?

I’ve seen Hilti in several different HDs, in several different cities here in TX. This has been for as long as I can remember. You can tell by the display that they cater to pros and big-time contractors. The tools are just much heavier-duty.
They do have some near the tool rental, but they also have them stocked where the rest of the power tools are. They have their own, very large display.

Went back to HD to check out the combo set I saw.
It’s the TE-1 rotary hammer and the WSR reciprocating saw for $259. The yellow label says “while supplies last.”

I will send some picts to Toolguyd.

Has anybody else seen this set, or have experience with it?
