Ridgid’s oscillating edge belt and spindle sander (EB4424) is an example of a somewhat gimmicky design that is done right. This 2-in-1 sander can be used to sand both straight edges and curves, and features a 4″ x 24″ belt and set of five sanding drums.
Since it first appeared a few years ago, Ridgid’s sander has developed a quite a positive reputation for itself amongst woodworkers, and is a great choice for beginners and advanced users.

I’ve had my eye on this model for quite some time now, and may finally place an order for one. I’ve checked out combination disc and belt sanders, but most of the models in the Ridgid’s $200 price range are made with too much plastic. There’s always the option of a decent 12″ disc sander, but the curve sanding abbilities of this Ridgid is highly appealing.

It is a very nice sander. I got one about 2 years ago, and that big table is great to have. Only takes about a minute to switch to spindle mode, but I use it mainly in belt mode.

I have used this machine for several years, and am pleased with it. But I have a problem. The bushings (part no. 825838) in the idler roller (the smaller one) have deteriorated. Every parts web site I have searched states that the part is ‘obsolete’ and is no longer offered. No alternative is listed. What can I do?

I tried to find the part via Ridgid’s website, and while listed it was not available for online purchase. Since the tool is still being sold, it is possible that the part has been resourced and renumbered or similar. Here is the contact info that I was able to find for Ridgid’s parts dept.:

Thanks for your information, Stuart. I contacted Ridgid directly, and was given the phone number for replacement parts. When I contacted them, they said the part was no longer available, and no substitute part was available. I called two companies that might stock “older parts”. Both were unproductive, could not help. I like this machine, but I am disappointed that it seemingly can’t be fixed. Is this any way to run a company?
Is anyone aware of a place that 1) I can find the dimensions of this bushing, and 2) Is there a place to use these dimensions to find a replacement part?

The bushing is a bronze shoulder bushing 3/4″ outside diameter, 1/2″ inside diameter, 3/4″ long. I found the bushings on ebay – 10 pieces for $11. I just need two, but the price isn’t bad to get my sander back up and running. This is otherwise a great tool!

I have wanted to pick this unit up for a couple of years but I heard about the bushings going bad quickly and parts were not available. Also heard this item was/is going to be discontinued so I held off. Has anyone heard if it will be discontinued anytime in the near future?
