Over at Amazon, they have these Sata long-reach Double-X pliers on sale for $16.

These pliers have an extended reach, but the double-jointed mechanism means that you can more easily reach into tight spaces than with single-jointed pliers that spread wide when opening.

I own these pliers from Gearwrench and Crescent brands, and they have come in handy. Sata, Gearwrench, and Crescent are all part of the same company – Apex Too Group.

Digging deeper, Amazon has the Crescent-branded angled-jaw Double-X pliers on sale as well, for $15.28.

Gearwrench Double X Long-Reach Pliers 2pc Set

If you want both sizes, this Gearwrench 2pc pliers set, with straight and angled jaw versions, is priced at $28.49 via a 3rd party seller, or $31 from Amazon directly.

It’s more common to find this 2pc Double-X pliers set at good pricing than the individual sizes. Meaning, getting the individual pliers at ~$16 each is a more notable deal, but this set is still a decent price.

The handle grips are a bit different here, but I’ve never had a problem with my Gearwrench Double-X pliers and often prefer them to the Crescent version.

    • Lowe’s ships for free on $45+ orders, Amazon on $25+ or free for Prime Members.

      The Gearwrench pliers are typically ~$22-23 or so; $16 seemed like a decent deal.

      The SATA are normally $20 each.

      ~$30 for the 2pc set seems right, but is still a good value.

    • You can’t actually buy any of those Zenith tools – Home Depot says they’re all out of stock for online ordering and not available in stores.

        • Hmm. I wonder – is Apex Tool Group undercutting their own brands’ pricing with OEM relationships, or did patent or IP protections expire, allowing another OEM to produce similar tools?

          I can only speak to the quality of the Gearwrench, Crescent, or Sata tools.

          • At one time the same design was available from SK – an non-Apex company – I bought some (SK #17851 and SK #17852) from them in 2007. I had thought that the design patent was originally held by an individual inventor – that was something like 15 or more years ago. So he may have licensed it non-exclusively and/or its run out.

            I also see that Amazon sells quite a few styles from Zenith (made in China) – and all seem to be priced at $14.49

  4. Thumbs up. I have a set of these, purchased from Amazon in 2019 – the Crescent ones. Paid $20 for the pair last year. Quite a deal! I think it was a Stuart post that turned me on to these and made me do it. Not flimsy and very well made – precision joints. While I rarely use them, they are very useful and work great when you need them.

  6. I had to replace a Honda headlight bulb on Monday and I could have used these! Two small cuts on the back of my hand reaching in there and the job was done. The Gearwrench set is ordered. My hands thank you Stuart!!

    • I don’t think a color scheme of two basic colors would fall under trade dress…there are many green/black tools out there. Sata green is also a different shade from what SK uses.

  8. These pliers have made the rounds in the private label world, I have a set branded ‘Napa Hand Tools’ purchased pre-Carlyle. Not the strongest grip due to the design but certainly handy set of pliers to have.

  9. Good price, neat products… How much you wanna bet it’s a $50+ product up here in Canada (for the 2 pack) due to whatever reason they’re using today? 😀

    Either way, I’ll probably wishlist this for another time. I don’t desperately need any long reach pliers right now. My Tekton pair is holding up fine… Only seem to get used when I’m pulling my beard out of the shower drain, but still good pliers. Originally bought as hook removing pliers for my Dad, for when he went fishing. He never did get to use them. So… I bought ’em, I use ’em. C’est La Vie.

      • Thanks fred! You are a master at finding me things I didn’t know I needed, but are worth every penny! This is why I say you’re like the Tool-Wise Father or Grandfather I never had. My Dad was more Money, Law, and Humour-Wise, and both my grandfathers passed away long before I could ever know them. But for MY interests, and MY skills? You’re an old school MASTER, and I appreciate your wisdom being passed on to me every time you speak. Thank You, fred. It means a lot to me.

        Now to find it on Amazon CANADA. 😀 I COULD order it from the US site, but the couriers and such are… Let’s just say very expensive… when the Border is involved.

    • Ha. $54 and change. I’ve eyeballed similar pliers before so I checked right away when Stuart brought my attention to them.

      I think they could be pretty handy when you drop a bolt deep in the engine compartment or need to position something in an awkward place.

      Our pricing is weird in Canada. I was just thinking about this the other day comparing some Proto tools. In recent history our dollar has been worth about 70% of the USD, but lots of tools seem like the regular price is about twice as high. 1.5x is about the max I’ll stomach before I feel like I’m getting gouged and need to look for an alternative (or just pay to ship across the border).

      On the other hand, sometimes pricing is similar and I feel like I must be scoring a deal. Stuart posted about a deal on a Gearwrench 3/8″ drive kit recently – and at the time the Amazon Canada price was actually lower. I had to exercise some serious impulse control because I already own all those pieces and mostly from better brands… but it was a deal!

      • I know, right? I know we can’t talk politics, but this has to be said. Ever since the new trade agreement was set up in majority favour for the USA, the Canadian prices have gone through the roof, and our Dollar has PLUMMETED. Stuff we would see only marginally more expensive than the US sticker price, is now sometimes double.

        I’m used to the US sticker price being $19.99, and the Canadian being $29.99… But this past Sales Marathon? Things like Screwdriver sets, meant to be $19.99 US, were ON SALE for $59.99… I totally understand there are other factors, like demand increase due to Covid, and Shipping Companies being backlogged due to greater demand because of it. But, seriously, Canada is seriously getting shafted. That is NOT a pun on the fact that I mentioned a Screwdriver set, I promise.

        When NAFTA was beheaded… Canada started to plummet economically. Which is weird, because… I thought we had GOOD Trade Relations with the USA… I wasn’t aware we were anywhere near earning this level of a beat down. I’d say “I’m Sorry” but 1) That’s TOO Stereotypical of our nation. And 2) I don’t know what we did to deserve it? US and Canadian made tools have always relied on eachother for industrial supplies. We were always strong partners.

        Now we’re hurting. Seriously hurting. I look forward to figuring out why we’re being gauged to death in all this. It can’t be 100% due to the Border closing for quarantine. The health and safety of EVERYONE, on both sides of the border, benefits from that one.

        • Are those sets made in the USA? NAFTA wouldn’t really affect things coming in from China but perhaps everything goes through the USA first.

          • I had a similar question. I wondered if some of it was just due to our smaller market.

            Gearwrench, for example, is not sold all that many places besides Amazon in Canada. It’s mostly smaller retailers, like KMS tools, that carry it. I wonder if the reduced competition for a brand like that would make Amazon able to sell it closer to MSRP than they do in a larger market.

            I.e. even though it’s Amazon to Amazon as a comparison, Amazon probably ships items to warehouses in the country it’s planning to sell them in, then prices them based on volume and competition. I’m sure that’s a simplistic analysis, but those factors might explain the discrepancy as much as international trade agreements.

          • Sorry Tom, I was talking in general. For some reason that I admit in the last paragraph you’re responding to, Canadian prices across the board have gone way up, and our Dollar gone down significantly (for the usual Canada/US exchange rate anyways.) and for reasons I’m still trying to figure out, we’re suffering up here in Canada.

            I’m not saying it’s entirely to do with the now-repealed NAFTA, because I don’t know for sure. I just know it started at the same time the “New Agreement” was put into place. And that is as polite a way I can phrase it as possible.

            Not EVERYTHING is affected. Lee Valley Tools? Made here in Canada? Same price. Food supplies from In-Country? Same Price. Anything that has to be delivered, or imported, price went way up.

            Sorry for the confusion, Tom. I’m not good at communicating today for some reason. I’m probably tired.

          • Yeah, that’s probably some part of it, Jared… but we’ve always been the smaller market we are today. So, why the sudden spike? That’s where I genuinely don’t know the reason.

            It’s certainly TIMED to coincide with the death of NAFTA as it was, but I share your doubts that it’s the entire cause. The reality is, I genuinely don’t know. And if it’s timed to the trade agreement somehow… why is our Moose-and-Beer Loving Nation being punished?

            I don’t care if it’s a political, or some sort of magical story behind it. Did someone fart in Quebec, and offend a supplier on a Conference Call? I try to keep as much humour about this topic as possible, because it has to be something silly. We’re CANADA after all. Other than South Park, who ACTUALLY hates us enough to cause this?

            I don’t have an answer, just a lot of questions, and a feeling of relief that you noticed this happening as well, Jared.

          • Probably because the border between the USA and Canada is closed and not nearly as many truck caring things go through.

  10. The Crescent is a better deal when you can get the X2 2-pc set around $20-25 or thereabouts. The Gearwrench set is great if you don’t like the squishy grip style of the Crescent/SATA or think you might ever need the warranty.

    The angled pair actually makes a great compliment to the straight pair if you want these for grabbing things and getting where hands and fingers won’t go. Sometimes you need the angle to work around obstructions or to get the clamping force just that much closer, where just having the straight pair will make you frustrated you don’t have the angled pair when you need it.

  13. @fred Thank You for finding those! Annoying Fanboy me has been looking for those since they were featured on Tested as one of Adam’s favourite tools. I will now go looking for them on the Canadian site, see if I can’t do some more Wishlisting!

    @Stuart… Forgive me, I wasn’t part of the site back then, I didn’t know. THAT said… I still want them, stiff or not. I don’t need Hemostats for repetitive use, like small pliers. I have actual small pliers for that. I need HEMOSTATS. I have my First Aid certifications, though I have to renew sooner or later, and I’m 2 courses short of qualifying as a Field Medic. Two classes I don’t intend to take, I might add… as they’re about Pharmacology, Injectables, and Top Level Field Diagnostics… What to look for to diagnose things like an aneurism, a stroke, or an embolysm. Frankly… Patching up wounds, setting and bracing bones, and being prepared to improvise packing a wound for the EMT pros to arrive is enough for me. And I do NOT want to be licensed to carry a Defibrilator. They’re expensive, and my Kit is pretty full already.

    I Need HEMOSTATS Hemostats. Long Reach and Short alike. Both for grabbing at things I can’t reach with my tools, AND for if someone nicks an Artery, and I need to close it off, pack it, and call 911.

    Hell, with 2020 going the way it is right now? I’d settle for getting a case of my freakin’ Microflex/Ansel MidKnight Nitrile Gloves!! They have a new version called the MidKnight+ with a longer cuff, and I’d love to try them, but… All Nitrile Gloves have been rerouted to the front line workers fighting Covid right now, and I’m down to… I think 2 pair of my gloves? I’ve emptied my First Aid Kit, I’ve used up what I had… Down to 2 pair… so now there’s a LOT of hand sanitizer getting used!

    By the way, my First Aid teachers always told me Hemostats are usually tightened too much, to DISCOURAGE the Tool Industry from using them, or over-using them. The “Hack” for this, because First Aiders are often on Jobsites as well, using them exactly as the medical industry doesn’t want them to, is to GAUSE WRAP the Thumb Loop, creating a comfort pad. Just don’t block the jaw lock between the handles, and it cushions both handles. Also… You’re supposed to hold them with your middle finger in the front loop, and your index above, to get more strength on the closing. If THAT helps at all.

      • And they’re INDISPENSIBLE for those kinds of jobs, too! Medically those are used for Endoscopic surgery, but for MAKING things? It’s all about grabbing, and either placing, or removing, something from somewhere you can only access by a small opening.

        If I want to do a stitch repair on the INSIDE of a sheath I’ve already made in leather, sometimes I gotta have something to reach in, and pull the needle through again. Because, once the sheath is made, and the sinew has had time to harden? It’s almost imposssible to turn the thing inside out to work on folded-in stitches. Been looking for sets of these for ages now! i’m IMMENSELY glad you pointed them out again!

        I’ve had tons on my mind tool-wise, so sometimes I need someone like you to remind me, and you always come through, fred! Thank You!
