Simple Green Crystal Cleaner and Degreaser

Simple Green Crystal Cleaner Degreaser

Simple Green Crystal is fragrance-free version of the popular green sassafras-scented non-toxic cleaner and degreaser. The concentrated cleaner is non-toxic, non-caustic, non-flammable, and is even biodegradable. There’s no added color either.

It’s still a mild irritant and should NOT be swallowed, but I consider Simple Green’s Crystal formula to be about as safe as industrial cleaners can be.

I just ordered another 24-ounce spray bottle from Amazon for about $10. Industrial suppliers carry it for as low as about $7 per bottle. I ordered it from Amazon because with my Prime membership I don’t have to pay extra for shipping.

The only thing that bugs me about Simple Green is how the spray bottles contain concentrated cleaner which should still be diluted for use. Even 1:1 dilution is recommended for heavy grease and stubborn soils. Although their quick mix guide says that Simple Green can be used full-strength without causing any harm, that doesn’t seem to be their general recommendation.

I also ordered Simple Green wipes, which seem to be similar to the Lysol wipes we use to clean and disinfect bathroom and kitchen areas. The wipes are a bit pricier than the spray, but seem to be worth the saved time and hassle for certain cleaning or degreasing tasks.

Do you like Simple Green Crystal as much as I do, or have you used something better?

Not sure about how health or environmentally friendly this is – but I like this product sold at Lowes:

I am sure this was written to avoid any liability, as we live in lawsuit society these days, but isn’t this common sense NOT to drink this cleaner?

With all due respect, why would anyone actually swallow this?

I know this isn’t the point of this posting, but I imagine the only reason this written on bottles is so companies aren’t liable for any damages this product might cause.

What a world we live in though. I wonder if even the average person even reads those labels.

I’ve used Simple Green products in the past and they have worked well. Nothing really outstanding about them, but they do the job.

There are certain industrial and commercial products that are food-safe. In theory, when you use certain cleaners around food-preparation surfaces, it’s possible to ingest residue cleaner.

A food-safe wood-surface finishing product that isn’t very harmful if swallowed – Clapham’s salad bowl finish – is in a different category of being non-hazardous than this product.

It would have been inappropriate for me to say that the cleaner is non-harmful and non-toxic while omitting the part about it being non-ingestible and potentially poisonous.

Why would anyone swallow this? That’s not the right question. Why would anyone swallow this intentionally? That I don’t know. How would someone unintentionally swallow the cleaner? Through inappropriate use. My saying that it is still a mild irritant (potentially eyes and nasal passages), and should not be swallowed could potentially avoid inappropriate use should a reader read the post and run out to buy one based on the non-toxic description.

The Amazon.com listing makes it seem like you’re getting a case of 12 bottles for under 10 bucks. Seems kinda expensive if you’re buying a 24oz. bottle for that price, since they are only a few dollars in the store, same with regular Simple Green.

I’ve liked Simple Green ever since learning it is the preferred liquid for cleaning bicycle rims to get maximum brake pad effectiveness, but the fragrance is often overpowering, so a fragrance-free version is good.

Rather interesting that old products are made “new” by removing the color and fragrance they put IN all those years ago. I can see a good reason for a color and scent though, that way you know what it is when it’s out of the bottle. A clear, odorless liquid doesn’t let you know whether it’s water or degreaser.

I have used original SG and liked it. I currently usehttp://www.oileater.com/CleanerDegreaser.html which I love. It it’s available at oriellys for about $13 for a gallon. Costco has it occasionally for about $12 for two gallons and comes with an empty spray bottle so you can mix to the strength you need.

I use it full strength wheni mop my epoxied garage floor and it cleans it to look brand new

Used Simple Green products in the past in an industrial setting ,and they are good – but nothing beats the products from Mirachem, with Mirachem 500 being the most consumer based product :
Contains no acids, alkalis or other known hazardous ingredients
Tested non-toxic to EPA and OSHA standards
    Non-flammable, non-combustible, non-fuming, non-caustic, non-corrosive
VOC is 75 g/L and 25 g/L at 2:1 dilution for air quality guidelines
Contains no Volatile Organic Hazard Air Pollutants (VOHAPs)
Contains no Ozone Depleting or Global Warming Compounds (GWCs)
OEM, Aerospace, NSF & Other Approvals – ask us for details!

If you’re a mechanic and your hands are immersed in cleaning fluids for long periods – I could not recommend this companies products more highly !
