Over at Amazon, today only (3/2/16), there are a couple of Snow Joe snow blowers/throwers on sale. Going by the other prices we see for these snow blowers, it looks like you can save around $30 to $60, depending on the model.
With Spring less than 3 weeks away now, we’re hopefully near the end of the snowy season. It’s been warm around these parts, but some snow is expected for Friday, so who knows.

There are 3 models included in the sale:
- Snow Joe SJ621 18-Inch 13.5-Amp w/ Headlight, on sale for $120
- Snow Joe iON18SB Ion Cordless w/ 4.0Ah battery, on sale for $287
- Snow Joe SJ620 18-Inch 13.5-Amp Electric Snow Thrower, on sale for $128
It looks to me like the SJ621 and SJ620 are similar, but with the later lacking the halogen headlight and costing more. The specs on Amazon’s product pages are identical for both models.
So, if I were shopping for a late-season snow blower, I might look closest at the SJ621 13.5A model, or the cordless one.
The electric blowers require an extension cord. Speaking of which, can anyone recommend a good cold weather 15A extension cord?

I have the Greenworks 80v pro cordless snow blower it works pretty good, but the build quality on it is pretty cheesy. Lots of cheap feeling plastic was used to build it the Snow Joe looks like a sturdier build unit.

Anyone used the black and decker 40v snowblower? Looks like a deal. Includes 2 batteries.

The B&D snow blower is brand new. I haven’t even seen any video reviews about it either online. The only snowblower I know of that was the same design is the Greenworks 40v, Greenworks 80v pro, and the old Ryobi 40v model. Ryobi also put out a new cordless snow blower this year

I just saw the reviews on Amazon of the B&D snowblower they are not very good. Lots of people returned it because the overload protection is too sensitive for a snow blower.

I’m a little surprised that battery-operated snow blowers work well. Figure a 40V 4Ah battery pack delivers 160 Watt-hours which doesn’t seem like very much given how much snow weighs. Assuming they’re running flat out when moving snow, those two corded models burn through an equivalent amount of power in 6 minutes.
Assuming a typical 10:1 snow:liquid ratio, 6″ snow covering a 50×20 driveway weighs around 3000 lbs. Can a battery-powered model clear this on one charge?

I’m actually going to get a 40v cordless and use it for the light snows. I’ll save the blizzards for my gas powered craftsman. I’m thinking with the black and decker i can clear my smallish driveway on one charge. This will be convenient for when i don’t want to break out the gas powered

I have to agree, not sure I see the use case for electric blowers at this point in time. Anything more than one or two inches of heavy snow, or two or three inches of light snow, and old school models will do the job much better (though I must admit I hate smelling like 2-cycle). Anything under 3 inches of snow and I think a trusty, and wide snow shovel will clear almost as fast as an electric blower, with the added benefits of being quiet, not having to hook up to an extension cord or worry about charging/replacing batteries in the middle of the job, and being a heck of a lot cheaper. Nevermind the fact that, when was the last time you didn’t get the shovel out to clear snow on your patios, porches, or narrow walkways where the snow blower either won’t fit or is actually harder to use?

I’d also throw a shout out to leaf blowers for light snowfalls — when it is very cold, the snow is light, and it’s an inch or less, the leaf blower actually works great, where the snow blower is overkill and you have a lot of surface area to cover in a short period of time.

Stuart, I’d have to recommend US Wire’s 99100 for any cold weather application like this, where you need some length. I think I got mine several years ago for about $57, and I don’t think I’d regret paying full price.
