Specialty Mystery Box Tool Giveaway (11/2019)

Nov 5, 2019 Stuart

If you buy something through our links, ToolGuyd might earn an affiliate commission.

ToolGuyd Partial Sears Tool Collection

We have more tool samples to give away.

I asked for ideas, and there were some great ones – thank you!

Here’s what I settled on: each prize will contain a mixed assortment of tools. Maybe the winners can’t use everything, but hopefully they can use some of the tools and pass long the others.

But, there are still some specialty tools. So, I decided to run another giveaway with a 11/12/2019 end date. I might not be able to fulfill all the prizes right away, but I think a one-week run makes sense. I can get some of the prizes out the door rather quickly.

This way, I can send a duct tool or two towards an HVAC pro who could put the tool to use. Or wire strippers, cutters, and overhead recessed light cutter to an electrician or someone who can use such tools. I also have some tools that are rather basic – perfect for new homeowners who are just starting out.

So, this giveaway is going to be a little different. I want to reduce the chance that any part of a tool prize package will go to waste.

There are prize categories, and you’re going to have to pick (one) first choice, and (one) second choice if you have one.

Choices

1) HVAC-focused plus general tools – start your comment entry with “HVAC”

I don’t have a lot of HVAC tools, mainly some duct cutter and notching tools. So, you’d get these plus an assortment of other tools.

2) Electrical-focused plus general tools – start your comment entry with “Electrical”

There are a few electrical work-specific tools, and an assortment of general purpose tools.

3) Beginner homeowner with few tools – start your comment entry with “Beginner”

This prize will have some basic layout tools (e.g. stud finder and laser level), and an assortment of general purpose tools.

4) Give me anything!! – start your comment entry with “Anything”

This is going to be the “gimmick” kit, with things like diamond grit-coated hex keys, LED pliers with coin cell batteries that no longer work, and things like the old Craftsman MaxAxess wrench.

5) Mechanics tool focused plus general tools – start your comment entry with “Wrenching”

This prize will include wrenches, hardware store ratchets, things like that, plus some general purpose tools.

6) Hobbyist and precision tool focused plus general tools – start your comment entry with “Precision”

I have some precision pliers, maybe small screwdrivers, and possibly a Dremel rotary tool or two, plus some other things.

7) Machinist tool focused plus general tools – start your comment entry with “Taps”

This kit will include things like a Tekton tap and die set I purchased for review but never even opened yet, plus some duplicate review samples and some other goodies.

8) General construction, framing, demo tools plus general purpose – start your comment entry with “Construction”

This kit will include things like a milled-face hammer, chalk line, maybe a long tape or longer range layout tools, and an assortment of other tools you might find useful.

9) Mixed bag – if none of the other categories interest you, start your comment entry with “Mystery”

I’m sure to have some more tools you might find interesting.

IMPORTANT – Let’s say your first choice is general construction tools and your second choice a mixed bag. Your comment would then start with “Construction, Mystery” and then your normal entry will begin. I will ignore any comment that doesn’t start with at least one category.

My Goal

My goal is to make sure these tools go to good hands and homes.

If you want to write back with a review or reviews on the tools after you’ve used them a bit, that’s great! But there are no strings attached.

Old review samples, purchased samples, unsolicited arrivals, duplicates, and other circumstances have simply led things to get out of hand.

A giant box showed up today out of the blue, and I don’t even know where to put it – it’s going to have to go back. New tools showing up? It’s a pretty sweet part of the job, except when the box is the size and weight of a small refrigerator and I know I won’t be able to get to it for a couple of months.

Rules and Info

The Prize: A box of tools with most in new or like-new condition.

The tools will be provided as-is. Use at your own risk.

A vast majority of the giveaway items are hand tools. There might be some cordless power tools, but most of our excess/older/unneeded power tool samples go the local high school.

Winner Selection: Winners will be chose at random. I expect there to be at least 9 winners. The prize packages will not be of equal value.

How to Enter: Leave a comment here, starting with your chosen tool prize package category. Then, tell me about me about a brand of tool that you’ve never tried. Why not? Or, write a Haiku poem about any tool you have used recently. Or, tell me a quick joke.

Also, fill out the address/contact info form:

Fill Out This Form

This is the same form as for this month’s mystery box giveaway, and so if you filled it out already, there’s no need to do it again unless your address has changed.

Rules: Entry period ends Tuesday, 11/12/2019 at 11:59pm ET. You must be 18 or older. By entering, you agree that the prizes are provided as-is, and that you use them at your own risk.

If your shipping info via the above form is incomplete, I will choose an alternate winner. The address and shipping information entered into the form will only be used for the purpose of this giveaway. Contiguous USA addresses only. One entry per person.

Prize Fulfillment: I hope to have the prizes shipped out by the end of this month.

The prizes will likely be sent via UPS or USPS.

Potential Changes: Although I don’t anticipate any problems, we’ve never run a giveaway like this before. If there’s a complication, I reserve the right to modify the entry terms.

General construction would be my first pick, I never mind helping a friend out with any task and it helps to have the right tool. I am a bit of a tool freak. I’m into Dewalt 20v a lot, a little Flexvolt due to budget and ryobi because of budget lol. I recently bought into Hitachi 18v now Metabo hpt, wich surprised me how good they actually are. And I also have some Milwaukee m12 tools but havnt made it to m18 yet. But I do like their tools. Thanks this is fun.

Electrical or HVAC. I’ve never used any Malco tools because I’m not an HVAC tech. But I am looking forward to their release of the Eagle grip locking pliers ever since they reopened the old vise grip plant.

Wera, I have never used any of the Wera tools. Toolguy always has reviews, and the comments are overwhelming positive – so it’s with shame that I admit I’ve not yet tried any. I am interested, but I by most of my tools in person. Not decidedly so, but just the way its worked out. I hope to try some soon.

    Construction, precision-
Never got to try knipex pliers as a commercial carpenter i rarely have a use for such fancy pliers and lose tools enough i would feel dumb losing a 60$ set of pliers sup i haven’t splurged yet and made the plunge although there have been several occasions where i wished i had the smooth face channel lock esque pliers.
Also never got to even see mafell tools in person.
Played with plenty of festool they always felt chincy especially for the price.
Refuse to try ryobi, principle alone just no thanks.
I do my best to avoid Chinese trash, the fact they are owned by a Chinese company like rigid and milwaukee just makes it worse.

Well that’s all i got for my rant.
Thanks for the opportunity to vent

I work for a contractor doing bath and kitchen remodels, and i am their lead electrician. I have never used Wera tools before. But i would really like to try them out, or anything else that can help me do my job faster, easier or more efficiently

Wrenching, Mystery. I have a project car that I’m itching to start working on soon. I’m getting my hands on an old work truck from my office that’s seen better days. Electrical, Wrenching. I’d be curious to try the new SATA tools. I love most of my gearwrench stuff, buts its a pain in the butt to try to get warrantied. I use Amazon all the time and they have a great return/warranty system, so if the tools are similar to gearwrench in quality and price the ease of warranty returns would really give them the edge.

    “Wrenching” or “Construction”

Instead of a tool brand, how about a tool store? I’ve worked within a couple blocks of Harry J. Epstein for going on 15 years and never realized what an active specialty supplier it still was! The building itself never looks very busy, just a cluttered mess, so I thought maybe it was just an old guy’s property that he couldn’t bear to sell or something. But now, I see how cool it is and that they sell a lot online so there’s gotta be a brand or two available there that I need to try out!

Taps I’ve got a 3 axis mill sitting in my shop and I currently use it as a glorified drill press. I’d love to get some more time on it. One thing I do do with it is tap holes that have been damaged. Either by hand or preferably mounted up in the mill. I really need to learn how to surface parts as well.

SK Tools is a brand I’ve never used. I have a friend that has an impact socket set and he loves how well the set has held up over the years. I consider myself to still be a beginner so they’re a brand I’m interested in adding to my arsenal. Unfortunately, they’re out of my budget.

Thank you for running this site and providing us with valuable information. I especially like reading about some of the precision German tools and tools that are unique. It’s kinda like having a special tool for everything. I learn so much for the community that you inspire and provide for.

    Anything, Mystery

I’ve been wanting to try festool for woodworking for many years. But I dont have any friends who woodwork and I’m afraid to demo them at a store because frankly, cannot afford.

Side note: Milwaukee M12. Bought into this system for my very handy but very diminutive wife while I stuck with Dewalt 20v. Or so I thought. As it turns out for general construction and renovation, M12 is plenty for drilling, driving, recip saw, etc. Manly men don’t need big tools I guess. She’s excited for the assembly driver

I have heard good things about hitachi’s new line up of Cordless tools, I cannot recall the Name newly acquired brand, but I am thinking it might be worth a try.

I will say that I have won some tools from a giveaway before, so I understand if I am not eligible this time around. I re-donated those tools to my graduating students who attended the club regularly or were entering trades after high school. Thanks again Stuart for being such a great guy!

    “Electrical”
    “Wrenching”

I work in an office, but as I’ve gotten older I have been expanding my tool collection slowly outgrowing my father’s old tool stack-on tool chest. He made a trip to help me with a larger project than I wanted to tackle solo, and I think I impressed him with my tool collection. I don’t think he expected me to have taken interest in doing as much DIY as I have been tackling, but more importantly I think he was more than a little proud when I mentioned I’ve been looking at some 52″ tool boxes so I can “get everything together”

Precision,Electrical. I think Wera is the tool brand I’m most interested in that I’ve never tried. I’m thinking of buying some of their laser etched screwdriver tips when I need to replace the tips in my multi-driver. I always look at their advent calendars but they usually aren’t exactly what I need. One year though!

    Thanks for the opportunity!

Wrenching, Mystery – I’m always interested in trying new tools, and enjoy handing them along to friends who are getting into similar hobbies.

Your reviews almost have me tempted to buy my first Wera or similar screwdrivers – I’ve already purchased my first Knipex 7″ pliers wrench after reading reviews on Toolguyd, and it was one of the tools that immediately went into my “I’m moving into a new house and need flexible, really useful tools with me right away” bag when I moved earlier this year. Thank you!

I remember growing up, I would hit up the local Sears to find the “new” tool that my father would get for Father’s Day, and later I enjoyed working with him int he shop and getting to use them.

Wrenching. I frequent your page daily. Love the variety of tools that you review, and its one of the only pages that lets readers comment, which makes it especially engaging. One brand that I have been meaning to try to is Gearwrench. I see a ton of reviews, but never think to pick any of their tools up when it comes time for something new. Hope to change that in the near future as i’ve been eyeing their 120xp flex head ratchets.

Precision – Been wanting to get a dremel type rotary tool for years. Don’t need it often, but there are times when it would be REALLY helpful! Precision screwdrivers would also be nice. Seems the kids’ toys always seem to have very small screws that I can’t see, let alone unscrew.

    Construction Mystery

I’ve never tried Rigid because I didn’t want to be forced to buy from only Home Depot. I used to use craftsman power tools, but once they started dying regularly I switched brands. My first house was around the corner from my brother’s, so to save money on starting up a new kit I would borrow his Dewalt while building up my own collection. I’ve since moved, but had built my Dewalt tool amount up to a point where I’m past the point of no return. I did borrow his cordless impact wrench for a treehouse I’m building and was quite impressed with the ease at which it drove in the lag screws.

    Wrenching, Taps.

I haven’t yet tried any Wiha tools. I’ve looked at them a number of times, but there’s no where local where I can check them out and compare, so I’ve always chosen an alternative from Wera, Knipex or Felo etc.

I’m curious about them though – mostly from the positive press here. I remember reading about that giant precision driver set, looks nice!

I feel the same way about PB Swiss incidentally, except with the added barrier of the expense. The tools look very nice, but without seeing them I can’t bring myself to part with the money to test them out.

Thank you Stuart for introducing me to so many great brands and tools! I like tools, but it seems crazy that you can generate so much content day after day.

Im always intrested in finding new tools/brands, especially for those “one off” Jobs around the house. Harbor Freight is my go to for these, quality and longevity may not be on par with elsewhere, but in a pinch itll get the job done. The Bauer or Hercules cordless lines id be interested in trying, just to see how it holds up to the big brands.

Beginner for one of my offspring that needs more new homeowner tools other than the ones I have already gifted. Precision for me, since a new Dremel would be great to replace my 40+ year old model that is slowly dying. Taps for me too, since I would like to own a decent set of taps and dies in place of the HF ones, that are not so great and pretty much one time use only. I do have some Tekton torque wrenches and they seem fine for my not so rigorous needs.

Beginner Anything, My wife and I purchased a 50 year old home that requires much work. I am learning as I go. The best lessons/advice I can pass on comes from reading sites such as this one.
    1. Know when to hire a professional to do the job – my diy skills are more now than anytime in my life but there is still plenty of projects that I am better off hiring a professional to do.
    2. The proper (quality) tool is worth purchasing or renting if you are going to DIY.

One bonus lesson: I Also love wrenching and riding mountain bikes. Whenever I make a major purchase, (example Dewalt dual bevel with xps) a few quality hex wrenches or bits added to the order seem to go unnoticed by the house accountant. 🙂

    Electrical | Construction | Wrenching

There once was a website called Toolguyd,
Where many a time we relied.
Stuart’s his name, and tools are his game.
But his house now over flows,
With free samples from who knows!
Now he needs to free up some space
So a tool giveaway he did embrace!

Poetry is not my area of expertise but I thought I would, in the spirit of things, give it a try.

I am however quite busy in my “spare” time methodically working through an abundance of projects and improvements in an old Church our congregation purchased about a year ago. I could really use some decent electrical trade tools, strippers, crimpers etc… as there seems to be a mounting pile of work involving electrical fixture, outlets, and switches in need to replacement upgrade and relocation. I would feel better about tackling them if I had some decent tools to accompany me, but the construction tools and wrenching tools would also prove beneficial in not only these but a multitude of other “projects” on my church “to do” list.
Thanks for thinking of us, and up the good work!

Construction & wrenching. There are lots of brands I’ve never used – there are so many choices out there! The most surprising — I’ve been to my nearby Harbor Freight three times, and never bought a thing. I want tools I that give me joy, and nothing in that store did it for me. My favorite recent tool is a Bosch 5 inch angle grinder/cutoff tool with the vacuum attachment and a diamond blade. I live in an old house with thick plaster walls, some with metal lath, and that tool is a life-saver for cutting out sections of plaster to make repairs and changes.

    Wrenching, Taps

Tool brands I have not tried: Anything high quality or German. My mother has a few Knipex pliers she uses for jewelry making, but she won’t let me touch them. Currently the nicest tools I have are a 60’s Craftsman socket set inherited from my grandpa (incomplete of course), and a singular Snap-On 3/8″ extension (also rusty) inherited from my other grandpa. Being a engineering student, I have filled in the gaps with no-name brands or Horrible Fright tools. To their credit, tools like these have the highest usefulness to price ratio – purely due to rock-bottom prices.

Stuart, I found your site while researching a cordless drill. My inherited Black and Decker is an absolute unit, but is older than I am and definitely not portable. As a result of your good coverage I purchased a DeWalt Atomic drill kit and love it. I appreciate your honesty and morals, keep up the great work!

    Nov 6, 2019

HVAC, PLUMBING, ELECTRICAL, FRAMING, DRYWALL & PAINTING, MASONRY-I’m what you would call a multi tradesman. MECHANIC -but not professional. What else do you have besides some basic hand tools? What kind of framing tools do you have? You got a framing gun or a finish gun or a precision placement gun? Palm nailer? Preferably pneumatic if you do. The cordless stuff is garbage so you can keep it unless you have a paslode which I need. So if you got one I could really use it along with the gas cartridges. I’ve got the Dewalt, but it’s a royal pos. That’s about all I want if you have it. But if not I ain’t sweatin it. I’m know you have a shit ton of extras with all the free tools that you get all the time (must be nice) and you mentioned framing tools so if you’re giving then I’ll take it.

I am going to disagree with the max axess sets being gimmicky. I use mine regularly at work installing electric motors which mount on all thread. While a wrench or ratchet wrench would work, I can get more torque with the pass through set plus I don’t have to worry about nut slipping out.

Most of my tools I source online or from Home Depot deals. I tend not to pay full price for anything if I can help it and Lowe’s is out of my way so I tend not to shop there too much. From what I’ve seen and felt though I like the Kobalt stuff more than the Husky stuff.

I was a machinist when I was young. I always wanted a Quality Tap and Die set. I Had Collected a Small Set On My Own. However When I Left That Company, They Withheld My Paycheck Untill They Cleaned Out My Toolbox. They Insisted That All Things Like Drills, Reamers , And Taps, And All Things Bare Metal, Was Company Property. I Was Able To Obtain A New Set Of Drills And Taps But Of Much Lower Quality, Which I Use Quite A Bit . And Now Many Are Broken. Now A New Set Of Taps Is Out Of Reach Financially. I Am now Down To Collecting One At A Time.

I was gonna tell ya a home remodeling joke, but I’m still working on it!

Bought a fixer-upper house 260 miles away from home. I’s going to be our retirement home someday, but right now I’m constantly shuffling tools between home 1, home 2, and work, while slowly duplicating the most needed tools at home 2 so I don’t need to keep bringing everything back and forth on weekends.

As someone trained as a cabinet maker and kitchen remodeler, and now working a job that entails plumbing, carpentry, electrical, landscaping, wrenching, welding, construction, and just about every other job under the sun, I can never own enough tools, and no tool will truly go to waste.

Electrical – I have yet to own or try out Makita or Milwaukee power tools. I’ve find myself very find of and pleased with Ryobi’s cordless One+ Tools as they’ve supported the same battery format for a very long time allowing me to keep and build my base tool set and periodically upgrading batteries as they improve for a very low lifetime financial investment. I also have historically standardized on DeWalt for their corded power tools primarily due to their included cases and reputation, though it seems to be getting harder and harder to find their tools with included cases.

I have only sort of tried PB Swiss. I know you guys love them, and that convinced me to buy a PB Swiss Screwdriver (one of the multi-bit in the handle types). Its ok. Thought it would blow me away, but it turns out that I think it is just “alright”. I have a multi-bit Wiha that I kind of prefer and oddly, and older Kobalt multi-bit inside the handle screwdriver that I really like – it fits my hand well, functions great, and was $12 or something so I don’t mind if it gets dropped in the mud or anything.

The PB Swiss had some of the best bits I have ever used, so I would definitely consider going to them for those replacement parts, but I’m not sure which tool to try of theirs that would be truly leaps and bounds better than the other manufacturers.

I’ve never used ryobi, probably because my first drill was a dewalt from costco, and when I was newer to this stuff I considered ryobi not good enough, but ironically now that I’ve gotten more into tools and can justify spending more I sometimes wish I had ryobi because the tools are so much cheaper than the m18 system I’m invested in. I imagine it takes you a lot of time to run this website, yet you still find time to reward your readers by paying it forward in contests such as this. Thanks a lot for what you do.

    Precision.

I’ve never tried any Hilti tools. Just yesterday I drove past a small strip of commercial buildings that had a Hilti sign above one of the storefronts. I don’t remember seeing the sign the last time I drove by, and then realized I had never used or even seen any of their tools in person. I suppose they’re not the kind of brand that sells in places like Home Depot.

Good day, I would like to ask if there is any chance that I could stand a chance of entering this competition as I’m based in Portugal. Me and my husband emigrated here from South Africa , as the crime has gotten out of hand. We have been trying our best to get on our feet but sadly the little bit of money we had once converted isn’t much in euros. He wants to start a maintenance and repair business but we don’t have the funds for it ,for us to try and get on our feet. Please sir if I’m able to enter even though I’m based in Portugal, please let me know … no one knows where in life they will reach and we really at the bottom at the moment. Looking forward to hearing from you.

ANYTHING. A have never used any Milwaukee tools. I have heard nothing but good things, but as a 21 year old i dont quite have the funds to anything more than dads tool box and Harbor Freight. I have an old truck that is in constant need of attention and my sister just bought a new house and need any help I can give. Anything to the cause would be amazing.
