There had been something missing from Veritas’ top-notch bevel-up plane lineup – a small smoothing plane. Lee Valley has filled in the gap and come out with the new Veritas small bevel-up smoothing plane, which is said to be about the size of a traditional #3 bench plane.
The small BU smoother is designed with a 12° bed and comes with a 25° to produce an effective cutting angle of 37°. Some users will want to create a steeper micro-bevel, which can be easily accomplished. My feeling is that this is why the plane comes with a 25° blade as standard, instead of a 38° blade as is bundled with the full-size smoother.

Veritas bundles the small plane with an A2 or O1 blade (your choice) for $179, and replacement 1-3/4″ blades with 25°, 38°, or 50° grounded edges are available for $27.50 each. A toothed blade is also available, for $31.50.

Note that this plane can NOT use the same sized blades as the other Veritas bevel-up planes.
