2014 Father’s Day Gift Guide

I created a 2014 Father’s Day gift guide at PopMech (check it out!), but had not intended on putting one together for ToolGuyd this year. I already wrote about what NOT to get Dad for Father’s Day, and our 2013 ultimate tool gift guide from a few months ago has more than 50 great tool suggestions and recommendations for you to consider.

Still, something inside me insists on pointing out a couple of tools that are especially giftable. And not giftable in the same way as seasonal tools that come out just in time for Father’s Day. These are tools and products that even more advanced tool users, DIYers, pros, and hobbyists would love to receive.

These aren’t doodads that will spent years hidden in a drawer – these are tools that will be eagerly used.

In case you expected more and are unhappy about only seeing 5 ideas and not 10, 20, or 50, I invite you to revisit our ultimate tool gift guide! Between these gift guides, there should plenty of tools to add to your shopping list or your own gift wishlist. I also encourage you to add your own recommendations in the comments section. Let’s try to make this a community gift guide!

1. Facom 440 Combination Wrenches

Facom 440 Metric Wrench Set

Facom’s 440 combination wrenches are utterly fantastic. They have similar I-beam and open-end designs as Proto spline ratcheting wrenches, and are great to use.

These wrenches are made in Taiwan and are built to extremely high quality standards. I just ordered a set of fractional 440 wrenches and are deeply impressed.

If you’re looking for a new set of combination wrenches, there are a couple of affordably priced USA tool brands, but these Facom wrenches are a fantastic way to go.

2. Bahco Screwdrivers

Bahco Irazola Tekno Screwdrivers

These Bahco screwdrivers were on my radar for the longest time, and I finally got my hands on a set. Are they as ergonomic and comfortable to use as the lone 5mm ball hex Irazola screwdriver of the same design? YES!

These just might be the finest soft-gripped screwdrivers I have ever laid my hands on.

3. Milwaukee Tool Box

Milwaukee 48-22-8020 Tool Box Loaded

Milwaukee’s new tool box is a little pricey for a 26″ box, but it’s packed with user-friendly features. It features corner compartments, inner lid mounting holes, and even side pulling handles. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it, the new MTB2600 portable tool box is a great place to stash your tools.

4. Simple Scribe

Simple Scribe

I hate to use words like cute little doohickey, but that’s what first comes to mind when I think about the Simple Scribe. The Simple Scribe is a small layout tool that’s made of molded plastic. Each side face is a set distance away from the center of the pencil hole.

Move the scribe on its 3/4″ face along a smooth surface, and it will make pencil marks 3/4″ above the surface. Get it?

You can get a USA-made Simple Scribe of your own for about $13.

5. Klein Canvas Tool Bag

Klein Canvas Tool Bag

Klein’s canvas tool bags are minimally designed – which is a good thing – and they’re very well made. They offer a couple of sizes with prices ranging from about $55 to $85, depending on size and features.

The only thing I don’t like about these bags is that they’re a big bolded model number slapped on the side of each bag. If you can get past that and the absence of external pockets, you’ve found your next tool bag.

Some nice ideas there. I got my dad a foursevens preon 2 this year. Since he is leaving for his annual fishing trip in Montana Saturday,he should get some jice use out of it.

The Preon 2 featured in the ultimate tool gift guide is a fantastic flashlight, and I also really like the Foursevens Penlight. I bought two at the end of the year when they were having an inventory-clearing sale and don’t quite remember where my Preon 2 ended up.

Ah yeah, the Preon 2 is an excellent flashlight. I gifted one to my father in law, and he’s really loved it. I’ve carried a Foursevens Quark Mini 123 on my keyring for a few years now and it’s worked wonderfully.

They should have put a pencil sharpener in that Simple Scribe.

That Simple scribe for a carpenter like myself would be awesome! I scribe to fit so many things, it’s not even funny.
