Seems this year that Black Friday & Cyber Monday had much better deals than for the holidays. My impression is retailers didn’t hold back many great buys for the holiday period.

That’s been the case the last 4-5 years. If you didn’t catch the great deals before the first week of Dec., you’re pretty much left with some ho-hum deals thru the rest of the Xmas season.

This year, a lot of the greatest deals happened before cyber Monday actually.

      That’s usually the case.

There are usually good deals in high volume from October thru December.

And there are great deals in either limited numbers or shorter sales period centered around Black Friday.

What’s interesting is how non-existent deals have been from CPO the last few years. 4-5 years ago, CPO had some of the very best deals on both new and refurb tools, many deals had multiple stacking offers. But the last few years, there’s literally no reason whatsoever to shop their site – almost without exception, their standard pricing is higher or can be beat by other retailers and their deals are somewhat deceptive and harder to decipher, as well as their website slow and cludgy. And on top of all that, limited selection generally within the major brands for certain items.

Too bad – was my first stop browsing thru late year and Father’s Day season tool deals.

I used to hear good things about CPO. So, I tried them out on what seemed like good deals. Both of the kits I bought were missing the supposedly included batteries. Customer service was not very accommodating – almost insulting and accusatory – so I chalked it up and never bought from them again. My experience is probably not the general rule – as others seem to like them. But there are other vendor choices out there that will get my money.

With some other vendors (Acme, MaxTool, ToolNut, ToolsPlus and ToolUp) – there seemed to be a certain sameness to the deals – at least from my first looks.

Other vendors (Burns Tool, Coastal Tool, Great Lakes Power Tools, International Tool and ToolBarn) that had in the past got some of my attention and dollars – were – as far as I could tell – all but silent about promotions

Some of the sameness might be due to the manufacturer’s incentives. I don’t think the stores offer the “buy this kit, get a free tool” type of deal on their own

I’ve bought from CPO a few times with success. They used to have better deals but not they’re not much better than anywhere else.
You still can find good deals from time to time on refurbs thru their eBay store

Check out CPO’s ebay platform. Sometimes they have some good deals there.

There were a few HD raceway markdowns.. The Ryobi rotary & carving tools were $59, then were lowered to $49. One example.

Best deals are in January when they clearance out remaining black Friday merch!

That rarely happens anymore. Most remnant inventory is either returned to the supplier or reshelved until the next promo.

Some items can be reduced as per the discretion of store management, others are fixed by corporate or the supplier.

So oddly enough outside of the tool world this has become more prevalent. A friend in clothing retail said a combination of longer lead times and local government coming down on excessive retail waste has lead to more items going to clearance rather then a dumpster. Even in the tool world Lowes near me now have clearance aisles. and even a whole store with nothing but clearance appliances. Dicks (sporting good retailer) has now also started opening separate locations to just clearance sale items.
Last winter I bought gas leaf blower from a walmart clearance aisle for $28 marked down from $115. This a big change from 10 years ago when a friend of mine worked for sears and when tools sat too long they would throw them in a dumpster some times even whole lawn tractors rather then sell them for more then 20% below list.

No so much anymore, in my experience. My Golden Years for post-holiday clearance deals was 2016-2018 or so. I picked up my first DeWalt 20v kit in Columbia, SC for about $200. DCD795, DCF886, DCL040, two 2AH batteries, and charger, all in a ToughSystem box. During the same time frame (etched into memory as I was attending the 9-week-long Drill Sergeant School), I picked up my now-stolen 20v Max grinder for $60, cordless wet/dry vac for $25, and the large blower and string trimmer kits for something like 25% off. Subsequent years found things like the compact brushless Milwaukee and Makita drills and impacts for $60.

Over the past few years I’ve found little beyond old displays and open box/looted kits, usually marked down at most 25% despite missing batteries and chargers.

The tool deals were blah this year. So much more stuff left compared to last year in the promo items. There’s going to be a lot left for Q1 clearance, maybe the prices will finally become favorable.

Didn’t buy anything. No real savings this year. If their was it seemed like overstock they were trying to get rid of. I look at stuff I bought last year and see the prices now and just shake my head. Even the stuff HomeDepot kind of hides in the store (the stuff with big yellow stickers) was not worth investing in when only saving $5-$10.

I didn’t buy much this year. I thought there were some decent deals, but nothing that I needed. I thought Home Depot’s Black Friday ad was disappointing. I was much more interested in Harbor Freight compared to previous years. I think they did a good job with their new brands.

I looked at https://blackfridayarchive.com/ at the ads before the pandemic, before tariffs, and before the recession. I thought there would a vast difference. But now I’m not so sure. There is less selection and higher prices, but the difference is not that great, and generally quality has improved across the board.

I personally only buy promo sale deals when there’s enough legit discount over the average “retail” price to bother. Maybe that’s why I’ve too many similar chargers? But that’s the only down side.

I didn’t buy anything. Nothing I NEED was on sale and nothing I WANTED was discounted enough to get me to buy it. There was really just zero excitement for me this year.

Black Friday this year was ridiculous. It started a month early! Makes the entire thing not special anymore and now you constantly want “deals.”

What’s interesting is despite two years of pandemic supply chain issues we had no hiccups when it came to tools, bits, screwdrivers… anything in a Home Depot yet on the computer chip side, auto parts side, etc lots of shortages and continued shortages. So they want you to believe either a. They had plenty of drill bit sets and tools stored in warehouses to take them through a major pandemic , but didn’t have say wiper motors or water pumps stored in warehouses or b. It was a manufactured crisis. By design.

I vote for it’s by design. If they can make stupid stuff nobody really needs then they can also make critical parts like wiper motors. Worse they never even tried to make more of critical things by ramping up production. They absolutely created a crisis.

Inventory is built up for Black Friday promos. These tools and supplies aren’t simply sitting in a warehouse, they’re produced in high volumes specifically for holiday promo displays and fulfillment.

Do you think tool brands walk through their warehouses, take note of what they have abundant inventory of, and then mark those items down for Black Friday? Of course not.

I had to wait a bit to get a specific faucet cartridge that was sold out everywhere. Now it’s back in stock. That doesn’t mean shortages were deliberate.

Suppliers will sometimes look at sales projections when determining how many spare or replacement parts will sit on the shelf, and other times they order x-number at a time every time they’re running low.

Shortages or delays can impact availability, especially if unanticipated. Swings in demand will do the same. It can be a very responsive process.

Black Friday inventory build-up is not as responsive. X-number of products at y-number of stores and z-number for warehouse fulfillment or resupply requires very careful planning and execution.

Far less sophisticated planning goes into determining how many replacement wiper motors to keep on-hand.

As for Black Friday starting a month only, that was pretty much always the case.

Retailers started their holiday gift centered after Halloween every year. Two years ago, everyone said they were starting early with month-long deals to reduce foot traffic, but nothing was different compared to previous years.

Last year, everything started two weeks early, with the explanation that shipping delays hampered Halloween fulfillment.

This year, everything started two weeks early, and then retailers started promoting everything in November.

Most retailers had similar deals as in previous years, but this year they all started advertising and actively promoting everything earlier.

Honestly I wish Leatherman would have brought back the Skeletool deals from prior to Covid. This is the one thing I would have bought a bunch of this year. Leatherman has been pretty quiet since then.

I really didn’t do a lot of Black Friday deal shopping at big retailers for others. I took advantage of some of the Home Depot deals for Makita / Milwaukee for myself to add tools I didn’t have yet. However it’s getting to the point where unless I decide to purchase tools that I want to have for occasional use that would make that occasional use super convenient (cordless track saw) there isn’t much left I need. I’m perfectly happy with my M12 speciality tools, m18 automotive tools, makita 18v / 36v general tools, and the few “big” (compressor, miter saws, etc) Flexvolt tools.

I’m definitely slowly completing a useful collection of German brand pliers but otherwise I’ve spent the last ten years slowly collecting up a collection of Snap On, Mac, and Wright hand tools. No need to add to those from the big box. I did buy a couple of the gear wrench kits for others and one for myself to be “to go” kits in the cars just in case. Otherwise nothing else.

I guess it’s the older you get the less you need kind of thing for me.
