Ace Hardware Black Friday 2014

Ace Hardware’s 2014 Black Friday sales flyer has made its way onto the web. These deals are valid Thanksgiving week, Wednesday 11/26 thru Sunday 11/30.

Special coupons include 50% off one regular-priced item under $30 that’s valid on Black Friday (11/28) only, and a $10 off $50+ regularly priced merchandise order that’s valid over Black Friday weekend, 11/29-11/30.

Following are the tool-related ad pages. In writing out the list of deals manually, nothing really stood out to me, except for maybe the coupons that can be used on regularly priced items. Are there any deals that you think are worth emphasizing?

Is that Dremel 3000 series rotary tool kit any good Stuart, or do you recommend another model?

I like the 3000 as a compact and ergonomic model. It’s not as powerful as their 4000 or 4200 rotary tools, but it’s still pretty capable.

The deal is alright, but I would recommend you also keep an eye out for Amazon’s deals. Last year the promo was $20 off $150, but maybe this year it’ll be $10 off $75, which would bring down the price of sets with greater accessories. If it’s $20 off $150 again, then you have the Ace deal to fall back on. In 2012 the Dremel deal was $10 off $125+, so $10 off $75+ seems a little unlikely.

I’m not picking on Ace, as all the retailers’ ‘deals’ this year seem about the same, but this can best be described as “meh.” Are holiday sales expected to be so strong this year that they feel no deep discounts are needed, or can they just not afford to sell any items at low profit margins? This seems like a regular weekly sales flyer rather than one for the busiest shopping days of the year.

Last year holiday specials at the big box stores near me were also “meh.” Much better deals at some other times of year online than over the holidays. Like the Fein multitool you alerted us to, which was in June. The deals mainly seemed to be in battery operated tool kits with various choices of tools. Perhaps these are aimed at people just beginning to buy tools and hope to build brand loyalty. Because I don’t do Black Friday on Black Friday (I spend that day with family) I may be missing out.

I have a few things for remodeling I’m looking for that aren’t tools, and I may check for those things like sinks and faucets. I’ve gotten electronics for gifts for others over the holiday sales, too.

Are you sure that’s not a typo on the craftsman evolv 71/4 circular saw price $3 or is that for the blades

Stuart, do you know what does “with card” mean on the GearWrenches? I can’t make out the card logo.

I went with the Flex/Reversibles for my Metric GearWrench set, and the plain non-reversibles for my SAE GearWrench set. Flipping the SAE’s over to change direction is no problem as there is no offset. This worked out well to save me money and give me the functionality I need, but both my sets are larger than these 6 pc. sets. I’m not saying it’s not a good deal, but any 6 piece combination wrench set is unlikely to cover all of one’s needs.

Is the ladder not a good deal and around 50% off?

According to the flyer, you’re only saving $20.

All of the major home improvement retailers typically have some sort of ladders, platforms, and/or step ladders on sale during the holidays, but they’re not always the regular products. Sometimes they have fewer features and/or lower weight capacities. Not a big deal, but something to be mindful of when comparing prices.

The sad part for my area, other than the lack of real sales, is that the local ACE stores in my area are privately owned and typically don’t even do these sales. Last year, I waited until they opened, at 10am Black Friday, to pick up the Stanley saw horses and the small work table, only to find out they had 1 pair of the saw horses that had been sitting in the back store room for months and no work table. They were kind enough to sell it to me for the BF price but they didn’t have anything else I wanted. They are a great store for things that nobody else carries but I don’t go there looking for Sales paper stuff.

DON’T get the sawhorses! Cheap and the hinges on the lower shelf the first time you open them. Ace web wouldn’t accept my negative review last year.
