I was looking at buying into M18 for the surge as well and noticed the surge + hammer drill combo gets you the hammer drill and another 5ah battery (4 total) for an extra $80. Since I don’t have a hammer drill it made sense for me to upgrade.

The M18 miter kit is a steal at $479, I checked flexvolt just to be sure the exclusion would do what its there to do and of course the code didnt work. This makes it even harder to choose a cordless miter saw. Its hard to find a corded 10″ quality slider at $479 let alone cordless.

Got 1 last night. I watched several of the major youtube reviewers repeatedly as the flexvolt was calling my name at $599. In the end the Milwaukee will have the capacity and power for the jobs I do as a DIY-er including a remodel and a deck.
Kind of funny because I was bashing this saw when I first saw it launched at Milwaukee NPS 16. Somehow Milwaukee got my $$$ anyway. Its the main platform I’m on and heavily invested in it so I figured I would stay put until one of their tools lets me down which hasnt happened so far.
Then again there is always room for a second miter saw, maybe when the flexvolt fixed miter goes on sale. All in all I’m excited to get my Milwaukee miter.

You can use the code on the worm drive Skilsaw table saw, but it comes with a stock blade not the red diablo, that model ends -22 and code doesnt work
So with free s/h & stand, and stock blade $279.20 Seriously mulling this over at this price. I like Dewalt but still like the skilsaw better

It’s a tough call.
The Skilsaw boasts more power, and it’s construction looks to be close to Bosch’s (Bosch owned Skilsaw u til recently), while the Dewalt has a nicer fence adjustment system.
I prefer the Dewalt.
But as mentioned, you get a free standing with the Skilsaw. That’s an extra expense if you need or want a stand for the Dewalt.
There are other Dewalt saws that come with stands, but not without a good bump up in price.

Stuart I’m thankful that I came across this post in time so I know that the click thru links dont pay much but it all adds up.
I had wanted to get the Skilsaw worm gear table saw initially and was on and off the fence (haha) and when I checked your most recent post on this saw an Acmes special with free stand (while supplies..) they were out at the $349 price then, thankfully in retrospect.
So for basically $100 more than the wheeled Kobalt Table saw (which is still boxed and will go back to Lowe’s when this arrives.) I got the saw I wanted.
Last week I sold my last BF table saw for $50 -Skil 3310 w/stand $59 Lowe’s BF 2011 and the Ryobi Miter saw stand and Ryobi OMT 2Amp both were $19.99 last January so the table saw cost me $2 a year and I recouped half of what I paid for the Ryobi last January and they paid for themselves many times over on jobsite’s this year.
I’m sure that if I ever sell this Table saw that it should have far better resell value than the Kobalt – which I’m sure is a fine saw at that price, just don’t think that it has the resell value and the wheeled stand is not removable.

I picked up the Diablo-equipped SkillSaw when they ran the 15% off, free shipping deal before election day, and the free stand promo was going on. ~$296 for everything to my door.
So far, I’m pretty please with it. Just finished a woodworking project for my sons Christmas present making a lot of rip and cross cuts. Had to make a lot of parallel-ism adjustments out of the box, and the miter gauge isn’t great (par for the course on these models). Not as loud and jarring on startup as some other compact models . . . I’m wondering if the “drivetrain” on this saw actually dampens some of that harshness out. Power seems excellent.
The form factor is great, and all the accessories and attachments storing inboard of the frame is a home run. My tool storage is limited to a 10×12 shed, so things that store and stack as nice little cubes and rectangles is a huge, huge bonus.

I’m not trying to be rude, but I really don’t care to read about every single tool sale from every single tool manufacturer on every single site or at every single store. Its getting kind of boring.

When it’s Black Friday/Cyber Monday and the holidays, tool sites tend to go into shopping advice mode and help their readers sort through and see what the best deals are for the tools they have previewed and reviewed throughout the year and where to get them for the lowest price. Makes sense for the site owners to get in on it too and get stuff they may have been wanting either to use or keep for a long term test and review, you can save a lot of money getting heaps of tools when they’re 25-75% off.
A site that just stuck to doing reviews in the middle of the biggest shopping time of the year would seem oblivious to the fact it was Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend and likely get left in the dust, even regular visitors would go elsewhere for tool deals and info.

I can understand your frustration, but this time of year, tool deals are what readers want.
I look to the holiday shopping season to save money on my own tool purchases, and in doing so I sort through the good deals and the ones that don’t deserve any interest.
There will be more regular content mixed in this week, and even more next. Coverage of tool deals will continue for as long as they’re interesting. Usually that means I stop looking so much the 2nd week of December or so.
Part of the reason some reviews are delayed this time of year is because attention spans are shorter during the peak holiday shopping season. I know mine can be. So the deeper content is scheduled out more carefully, rather than being posted whenever they’re ready.
A long review on Cyber Monday? Nobody would read it.

• See what’s new and interesting in consumer (as opposed to industrial) tools
• See what Stuart’s take is on them
• See how those tools perform if Stuart (or Ben) tests them out
• See what others think and say about them – in an interactive way
• See where I might purchase them for a good price based on Stuart’s experience and others comments
So at some times in the year – notably the run-up to Christmas – the nation gives into wanton consumerism. Some rightly say that it spoils the meaning of the holidays – but for better or worse it is a part of our culture. In the “feeding frenzy” that has become the “Black Friday – Cyber Monday Weekend” I suspect that many of ToolGuyd readers were looking for bargains. Most reader comments seem to confirm this – and that the ToolGuyd postings about sales were useful to them. For myself – I did only a modest amount of gift shopping – but was deluged with email offers – many of which I tried to share on the ToolGuyd Community Forum.
While I agree with you, that I’m more interested in the new tool innovation posts on ToolGuyd – particularly at my advanced age where tool buying for myself has slowed to a crawl – I can see why others want information to facilitate their buying.
I also believe that blogging is how Stuart makes his living or part of it. I suspect that even independently wealthy bloggers would wish to cover their costs – and that advertising revenue is one way to do that. So I’m accepting of blog advertising, purchasing links, and post-Thanksgiving sales info, so long as the blog continues to deliver “editorial” content of interest to me. So my take is to thank Stuart for providing an interesting and useful forum – and say – certainly listen to reader comments – then keep up the good work.

This time of year I tend to buy less essential tools I didn’t want to buy at full price, or essential tools I couldn’t really budget for at full price.
I’ve worked ToolGuyd through enough holiday seasons to have seen that a lot of readers do the same.
And we all tend to buy a few things we didn’t even know we wanted or needed, although I’m sure that’s what certain sales are designed for.
If I hadn’t fallen asleep early, I would have ordered a Fuji paint sprayer with $150 savings. I’ve been on the fence about it for some time, but the savings would have been enough to knock my credit card out of my wallet.

From what I remember reading when I started looking into all this back in September, the Q4 you linked to has additional noise suppression. But other than that, I believe performance should be close enough.

I found an interesting qualifying item in the hot deal section… I nabbed a Milwaukee Fuel 7.25 circ saw with the HD 9.0 battery and charger. With the promo, this was $200 delivered! The saw in this package is the premium 2731 M18 tool. If you buy the bare tool its generally $200 and the battery/charger is also $200 by itself. Other combos including this specific tool are usually well over $300 with an inferior battery to boot. Even without the promo its still a good deal at $250. Not too shabby.

It wasn’t. No, not anything Festool or Flexvolt, although both have a few things I’d like to get. The 12″ Bosch Glide. It’s been out for years. It’s not on the deal.

I too am often puzzled by what gets promoted for “special sales” and why. Festool – of course enjoins their dealers from discounting – and about the best you can expect is free shipping.Other manufacturers may also impose restrictions or on the other hand offer some retailers special incentives to promote some items. I sometimes think that profit margins might be different for different items – maybe newer hot selling items have less margin. Another issue is how close the vendor’s base price is to their cost. Over on the ToolGuyd Community Forum – Stuart and I were commenting on some of the exclusions in Zoro’s 30% off sale – which seemed pretty restrictive especially considering Zoro’s often higher than average starting prices. Nonetheless, as you point out – excluding the GCM12SD does seem a bit odd.
