Knipex Cobra ES Extra-Slim Pump Pliers

I have seen this deal on Knipex Cobra extra-slim adjustable pliers (10″ size) a couple of times now, and I’m nearly convinced that I need them. This looks to be a hybrid design, with almost long-nose-like pliers jaws, except wider.

Yes, these pliers have a slimmer head than traditional Cobra pliers, but it’s also the extended gripping zone that’s compelling me. I must just have to buy a pair. If I didn’t already have ergo-grip long-nose pliers and adjustable pliers, I’d be all over this deal without hesitaiton.

Klein isn’t much on tool deals this time of year.

As you note Klein has added some new hand tools like a glow-fishtape (50550), a lineman’s hammer (832-26) an impact punchdown tool (VDV427-300), a cable cutter (63225)and two clamp-on meters. I thought it interesting that their new BAT20LW1 right angle impact wrench uses Dewalt batteries.

Under the recent Lexox screwdriver post – I added HD links to the new Klein extendable stubby (32308) and regular-length (32303) multi-bit screwdrivers. Klein also added other Taiwan-made multi-bit screwdrivers: 32305 Ratcheting, 32307 tamperproof bits, 32314 precision size bits and 32717 precision driver kit.

The Cobra ES’s are nice, the beak-shaped jaws fit where rounder jaw pliers won’t go. My main gripe with them is they aren’t offered in a comfort handle version, and the thin textured coating Knipex uses for these gets dirty and tears easy compared to the thicker, tougher, easier to clean plastic coated handle like on the pliers wrench.

The Tinker for $18.39 is barely below the $19.99 retail price, and you can usually find it with the sharpener keychain in retail stores for the same $19.99:

    https://www.target.com/p/victorinox-swiss-army-tinker-knife-with-key-chain-sharpener/-/A-50220535

Still a great gift either way, but the sharpener makes a great addition for quick and easy sharpening with the right angles.

Ugh that better not be a pull through carbide sharpener, I’d expect better from a company that wants to instill a sense of quality. I wish people who know nothing about putting an edge on a knife would stop buying that crap that actually damages knife edges and perpetuating this junk. If its a pull through ceramic sharpener, then thats a different story. Give me a brick, the edge of a car window or bottom of a coffee mug and some cardboard or a piece of wood or a heap of other odd things and I’ll shave hair with any plain edge knife.

I had someone ask how I got a mirror finish on my chisels and gouges and if that helped them. As I started to explain the process and offered to show him – I was told “that’s too much work”. I thought: gee its really not – and if you want an edge tool to perform well you should learn how to properly sharpen and hone it.

I use waterstones of increasing finer and finer grits. Sometimes purely by hand – but often using a honing jig (Veritas or Lie Nielsen) to set and hold the angle. I usually finish with a diamond honing plate followed by what’s call jewelers rouge impregnated on a strop. With Chisels and plane blades – you may start out by insuring that the back of the blade is honed flat. For some tools and uses – a secondary bevel can be incorporated in the cutting edge. In between major re-sharpening you can touch up the edge with a diamond hone.

A perhaps less expensive (fewer stones to buy) way to sharpen is to substitute sandpaper/emery cloth tacked down (as in spray adhesive) to a piece of flat plate glass or flat square of granite flooring. The same idea applies – that you work your way through successively finer grits up to the sorts of sandpaper that is used in auto-body finishing (it comes at least as fine as 5 micron/2500 grit).

Other folks seem to prefer machine sharpening on a wheel at low speed (not just a typical grinder) or a machine-driven abrasive belt. But I’m happy with hand sharpening.

That Knipex Cobra pliers is nice – but the price is rather Ho-Hum – not Ho-Ho-Ho.
Same Price at Zoro and $32.18 at KC TOOL with coupon code TOOLGUYD4LIFE.

The Amazon free shipping – does make their price more appealing.

I have found that Zoro has been price-matching more these days, but it’s hard to tell if that’s really what’s happening.

If ordering from KC Tool, wait a few days for their Black Friday/Cyber Monday promo.

I ordered some “I want these sooner” tools a month ago, and have a cart full of some other stuff (mainly EU hammers) that I’m waiting for Black Friday to order.

Piacard and Osca hammers are tools that Amazon sometimes seems to deeply discount when their stock is down to 1 left.

As an example I found this hammer:

The 0940-20 is brushless and has a more attachments.

I’m not prepped to do a comparison, but have been using the 0940 and it’s great for spot cleaning tasks.

I find the 0882-20 to be just OK. Not a great deal of suction – a bit klunky in the hand – a big pleated filter (good) – but that leaves little space for debris (that’s not so good) in the canister – so you need to empty it very often

Nothing against Irwin pliers I like them but…$70 for a set of mini pliers they don’t seem to even be there higher end pliers I’d skip that and get a mini kobalt set from Lowe’s for $20
