Woot, an Amazon-owned discount store, has the Dewalt PowerStack 5Ah battery on sale for just $79.99.
There’s a limit of 2 batteries per customer.
As a reminder, the 20V Max PowerStack 5Ah battery has Li-ion pouch cells and is advertised as delivering more power, greater efficiency, and longer life than their cylindrical cell 5Ah battery.

The next-best price I could find right now is $196 ($98 each) for a 2-pack on Amazon. It’s $229 ($114.50 each) for a 2-pack at Home Depot and at other authorized dealers, or $199 and up each.
Amazon has the standard (older cylindrical-cell) 5Ah battery 2-pack for $129 right now. That’s a good price, too – other authorized dealers have it for $149 right now.

For the Dewalt DCBP520 pouch-cell PowerStack battery, $80 for 1 or $160 for 2 seems like a great deal.
Shipping is a flat $6 per order, or free for Amazon Prime members.
Woot advertises that the battery is covered by a “3-year Dewalt general warranty,” which implies they’re selling the batteries with full warranty coverage.
It’s not clear whether Woot is considered an authorized dealer, even though Amazon is.

So the obvious question is if these 5AH Powerstack batteries are Dewalt’s cutting edge, why are they on a discount site? Does it mean there is a better Dewalt mousetrap about to be sprung?
Bonnie
I don’t know if this is still the case since they got bought by Amazon, but historically Woot picked up pallets of items on the cheap rather than coming direct from a manufacturer. Like store closing liquidations, new-in-box returns, or extra holiday stock.
A few stores have had this battery as a free add-on to tool deals recently, I got one with a grinder, so maybe this could be excess stock from one of those promotions?
Stuart
Overstock?

POWERSTACK Isn’t exactly new to the market and it’s be out and available for quite some time. The Dewalt DCBP520 5Ah was released in December 2022 and we had hints of it and other information well before that. DeWalt initially released the POWERSTACK battery technology in December 2021 with the smaller 1.7ah version.
I would expect these to be new batteries manufactured in the last 12-24 months from Christmas 2023 or original launch, but who knows. It could be new overstock inventory. What ever the case the “new product launch” is definitely over and initial surge has probably hit steady state so inventory can be maintained for seasonal and promotional things. Seems like a good price for lithium pouch cell tool batteries. Still not as cheap as cylindrical cell batteries if you are looking for the cheapest Ah per dollar.
I wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger on this deal if I needed Dewalt batteries. Definitely saves the hassle of “hacking” combo deals to get the cheapest battery by returning a tool if that’s your thing. I personally am well stocked on Dewalt batteries.

Keep in mind the new 8Ah PowerPack tabless cell pack is coming out this summer.
Robert
Ah, that is the better mouse trap I was wondering about.
Stuart
If PowerStack 5Ah is a mouse trap, the 8Ah will be a rat trap.
I doubt the 8Ah – which still hasn’t been officially announced – is tied to the 5Ah being discounted at Woot.
Also, keep in mind that Woot is a small corner of the internet.

It could be depended on location, or I was lucky, but my experience with Dewalt battery warranty at a local Dewalt service center was extremely easy. I brought in a handful of 20v 5A batteries, some of which were very close to the 3 year date, and the guy just checked the stamped dates and gave me new batteries. No prorated. No asking when/where I got the batteries…I think I only need to provided ID. Thumb up for Dewalt.
Adam
No company pro-rates batteries, unlike some auto batteries you might be thinking. They are either in warranty by manufacturing date on the battery, or based on serial.
So had you been out of the 3 years based on date, you would have then had to supply a receipt. Most companies are good about warrantying without proof, but just based on date. Though lately I have been reading Ryobi (and some Milwaukee) wanting receipts for tools that are clearly within warranty.

My only battery warranty complaint is my own fault for not properly rotating my batteries. IE not putting them into service as I’ve acquired them. Both Bosch and Milwaukee have “noticed” my poor practices. Grrr.
Robert
Jim, can you please elaborate on “Both Bosch and Milwaukee have “noticed” my poor practices.” How would the companies notice what you did?
I have several physically big Dewalt batteries that are too cumbersome for every day use, so I hardly use them. A 6AH Flexvolt battery and a couple of regular 6AH batteries. For example, they are too high to completely fit in the underside compartment of my Dewalt cordless hand vac, so it would sit unstable if it rested only on the battery bottom (the 5AH are the biggest I can use in that case).

hmmm. I have several 60v batteries that I have never opened that are probably 2-3 years old. I usually keep 2 that are live and when they start to go down I will rotate a new one in. These were all “promo” deals. heck I still have 10 year old 20v DeWalt batteries that still are working. not sure how many charges left but for small things they work great.

They were $45 on Woot when I emailed Stuart on April 26th. Here’s what I said at the time:
New, not refurb. Why, just why? Is SBD sitting on millions of these and approaching EoFY or something? I have one of them; they’re plainly superior to the old 5Ah, and I’ll even grab it first instead of my (nominally) smaller ones, because it’s so light and compact that it feels like I’m getting the extra capacity for free. But maybe SBD produced them with an expectation that everyone was going to sell their old batteries and convert to these? Because other than overstock, I can’t imagine why they’re moving them at what has to be close to, if not below, their wholesale price.
