Amazon Prime Day 2016

So… it’s Amazon’s 2018 “Prime Day.”

There are some nice tool deals, for Prime subscribers only. Not a Prime subscriber? There’s a free trial option.

These deals are said to expire at at 3am ET 7/18/2018.

Some of the tool deals include:

Bosch Flexiclick modular drill system kit  for $119
Bosch 18V cordless combo kit bundle for $250
Bostitch compressor and tool bundle for $159
Makita 18V X2 blower kit for $213
Makita 18V sub-compact drill kit + bonus accessories for $117

Plus a bunch of other deals.

(Note: As of the time of this posting, Amazon’s website is a little slow and at times unresponsive. It’s not just you.)

Buy Now(via Amazon)

I’ll check back tonight to see if any more tool deals are posted. So far, there are some good deals, but I feel that Prime Day has been over-hyped. Nothing in my cart has been discounted, and I don’t need anything that’s on sale.

Dewalt: Buy a select bare tool, get a free battery and charger

Go to smile.amazon.com to get around the server issues. Smile is the charity version of the same amazon products.

It’s the same system. An extraordinary number of people are hitting the site from their devices, and trying again and again when there’s a server hiccup.

@Stuart I imagine that you can adjust the click thru link so Toolguyd can get credit on purchases.

For readers with Amex Membership Readers points (only need to use one) this is stackable but Get 20% off (max $100 discount) when paying with at least one Amex MR point.

Nah, I’m still getting it at smile.amazon.com and have been since the start – – inconsistently, of course.

I agree about over-hyped, geez. There’s nothing to interest a tool junkie like me. A couple Autel code readers and some Tekton torque wrenches, but that’s it and nothing I don’t already have.

OK – buying on Amazon is still a decent experience.

Many prices are inflated to cover the “free shipping” – not exactly a surprise.

That makes your Prime Membership worth less – maybe not worthless.

Prime used to come with added media content – lots of which was “free” . More and more seems to come with an added charge – again making membership worth less.

I’m on the fence about staying with Prime – and the annual price increase. Amazon does do a great job of marketing – like the hyping of Prime Day – but maybe we’d all be better off if we donated our Prime Membership cost to our favorite charity

Some things which probably should be free, like music streaming, now have added costs.

But 2-day shipping has become almost expected, and I also enjoy same-day shipping on a lot of things.

The way I see it, Prime pays for itself when I need or want things faster. Expedited shipping fees add up fast.

My issue lies more in the fact. Amazon only sells junk basically. So short of a pair of shoes or something like that. They really have nothing for me . I am not buying any electronic junk.

The biggest reasons that I might let my membership go too is because Prime shipping isn’t two day shipping any longer. Three or more days has become the norm on a lot of the items. They will give you the shipping estimate upfront however. For example if I was to place three different items, all in stocks, on Monday. One might have an estimate arrival time on Wed, another on Thu and then Fri. Yet there will be another line that said, if you want it tomorrow (Tuesday) then place an order by a certain time. So one day shipping is “One Day” yet Two Day shipping is now more than likely three or more days.

I rarely have this problem when buying from Amazon directly. As a matter of fact, probably 25% of my 2 day delivery items actually come next day. Things from other sellers, on the other hand, are hit and miss.

          • firefly

            Jul 16, 2018

Prime is prime period. It’s fulfilled by Amazon so it shouldn’t matter who sell it. I have had my share of Prime items come the next day. But those days seem to be fewer and fewer. The two days that become three for four days has become a lot more common for me these day. So it could depend on your address/what you order/how often you complain or perhaps your neighbor to a guy whom order a lot of amazon stuff. I notice that one of my neighbor used to order a lot of Amazon so it could be why my order arrive early because mine was piggyback on his order on the same route.

So it look like Amazon has intentionally broken the 2 days shipping promise if they can get away with it. It look like we, the customers, has become all but just a variable in their shipping parametric equations.

I buy about 5 new books a month, usually from Amazon. Media shipping can take weeks, so I like Prime for the free 2-day shipping. And if you buy a CD, you usually get access to the same music through their streaming service, which can be handy.

And there are some good shows included in Prime. Orphan Black was good. So was Fortitude.

Today I bought a Gerber Dime for $10, a few bucks off the regular.

Once my laptop charger stopped working, and the new one from Amazon arrived before it lost its charge.

(shrugs) So it isn’t a huge deal, but it is worth it for me.

If within 30 days, you can do a return/rebuy and eat the cost of return shipping.

If not, well, you got your money’s worth.

You don’t have to return your used item. You can return the new item once it arrived. Sometimes if you chat to them they’ll do a price adjustment. Though prime day is probably a really bad time to do a chat since most of the reps are stressed out.

There’s always a bit of over-hype and I don’t think one should expect major tool deals on amz prime day. Kind of like how the deals with or diy big box stores can be underwhelming.

I don’t like the prime price hike either, but do like the convenience of amz selection and prime shipping.

The convenience of ordering and having it in two three days just can’t be beat, over driving around trying to find what you want/need … or trying a whole bunch of online stores, dealing with shady sites that game google ranking, etailers who don’t respond in under a week, …

The speakers I bought 2 months ago are now on sale.

I bought a couple of things last year, and some other things I own or have thought about buying are on sale.

There is a lot of junk to sort through, though.

The tool deals are up to the brands, for the most part. Some of them seem to be participating, but they also recently enjoyed the usual sales bump-up due to Father’s Day, and so there’s not as much pressure as in other industries.

Amazon will probably keep increasing the price of Prime, as long as the number of subscribers keeps increasing.

Try living in a more rural area where “two day” shipping does not exist. Ex: two orders placed Friday evening get here on Wednesday. Overnight shipping would have them here Tuesday. Oh, and when they ship via Smartpost I have to wait a week because rural. *sigh*
In larger cities it would get here between Saturday and Tuesday.

Late Friday means it likely gets processed on Sat then who knows what happens shipping wise on Sun … some items also come from a distant distribution center … or even directly from the manufacturer … if they’re closed on the weekend, there’s your Monday packaging and ship out, two day delivery. Been there done that. Had time critical orders before a trip … items from same brand came from three different places including direct from manufacturer … and those arrived too late.
As far as stupidpost and stuff … I grab the phone of email and complain to whomever sends me stuff that way IF they don’t disclose it, because it adds an extra day or two above ground shipping. Been there done that where the item is on some truck or some pallet, handed over to usps … location unknown.
But all in all, I live rural-ish too but happen to have a UPS node 5 min away and a USPS town with local training center that goes out of their way to make things right. I did have some mishaps, with two carriers and the postmaster was all ears, agreeing with the honest factual complaints. Knock on wood we have a great mail carrier again.

I do take business days into account. Living in the city you get true overnight and 2nd day service. In more rural areas they call it the same thing, but make it more like “two business days after the first full business day.” That is a bit misleading to me.

Prime Day really was a bag of frustration
Echo devices and its smart features not responding
First things we added in cart expired, because there was no indication you had to complete in 15min … just added to cart and was trying to shop.
The mobile app was giving constant “ something went wrong errors “
Browsing and navigating for some deals was a total pain.
Missed out on one thing I tried to buy twice … gave up on the rest.
Did buy the flexi drill, even though I did not want another battery platform … too many times in confined areas one can’t get the angle or approach. Just purchased a right angle drill and the unit is just too big and awkward ……….. I could almost see myself selling all my full size battery tools and buying some compact or subcompact … if it existed.

The Bosch deal is good in that it includes so many things, like hoses, jigsaw blades, etc. The holiday deal didn’t do this, if I remember right, it just had limited selections. I don’t think it stacks with any other deals that I could see, though.

Got the flexiclick! Debated for a while but certainly could have used it yesterday and the week before, instead of driving screws at an awkward angle. I still have the 12v ps31 drill and driver kit with 2 L-boxxes from 2013 for $94 deal linked from Toolguyd, such an excellent deal. Still going strong! Had to wait for delivery, like this one.

My flexklick was delivered. Thanks Toolguyd!
Spouse did complain that this is like drill #6 cough cough. Anyway. First time I have been excited about a drill in a while 🙂 Could have used it more than a few times in recent history. Looking forward to using it confined spaces and hardware installs inside of cabinets and especially the odd angle or no clearance things that come up frequently.
Now I will have to bite the bullet on a 20” packout tote and sortainers … as my electrician’s tote is bursting at the seems and I want the flexclick to travel in it … as that’s my first bag / toolkit to go anywhere.
